Replacement Bulbs: Rear Tail Lights

Hey Acurazine, it's been a while!

Just did a tail light housing swap on my 07 TL-S from stock to DYNO (smoke) and don't really like the look of the stock bulb turn signal. Any advice as to what kind of bulb I should switch to (i.e. white leds, amber leds, switchbacks)?

Thanks a stack!

The rear turn signals are single filament 7440 bulbs.

Switchbacks only work on dual filament applications.

I have never heard of this dyno smoke tail light housing you are talking about. Do you have a picture or link to share with us?

Your best bet is to swap out the bulb with a red or white LED bulb. I prefer a red LED because the factory turn signal housing has a red piece of plastic covering the bulb. By placing a white bulb behind a red plastic diffuser can create a pinkish looking output.

General rule of thumb is to go with the same color LED as the plastic lens covering the turn signal. So if it's a amber/orange cover over the bulb than go with a amber/orange LED bulb. Same for red. You can go with white but the color output might be very slightly off.

I hope your new tail light housings aren't completely blacked out because that would affect light output of your brake lights as well as turn signals during the day. Not very safe. A light smoke/tint is OK but completely smoked/blacked out is no good.

I use these for my rear turn signals and they are very good. I can see them reflecting off other cars behind me.

from the first glance I thought you said you swapped out taillights and then put it on a dyno(as if that would make you gain hp)

VLED V3 Triton or nothing at all. They are incredible in all lighting conditions, and don't look stupid by having a huge tower LED in the housing.

Nuff said! V3 Triton left side, stock right side. These are rear turn signals pictured while the bulbs were on flashing (obviously). All im doing is trying to save you the hassle, time, and money of doing things multiple times because if you buy anything but the V3's, your gonna regret it. Especially in any sort of daylight conditions where tower LED's do absolutely nothing....and look like crap inside the housing.

Not necessarily. I have the VLEDS platinum series as my rear turn signals, and they are plenty bright in all conditions. The reason is that there is only a 50 lumen difference between the triton and the platinums, which is nothing, but not when you consider that you save $40 going with platinums, which can pretty much pay for a set of reverse lights. I've got nothing against the tritons, because they are indeed amazing (I use them for my front turn signals), but there is a cheaper and just as good alternative.

I agree. I have triton turn signals for the front and platinum for the rear.

$50 buys you red platinum that are 170 lumens
$90 buys you tritons that are 210 lumens.

spending a total of almost $100 for 40 extra lumens isn't worth it to me. Platinums are still very bright

Here's what I would get OP

https://acurazine.com/forums/third-generation-tl-2004-2008-93/not-another-led-thread-921929/

JTS never took me up on my offer to compare, the thought of my $25 eBay being brighter than the VLEDs was probably to much to stomach.

C'mon now macho man.. luminosity isn't everything.. How about durability, build quality, etc? Are we really gonna talk smack over a couple of LED bulbs and savings of $34.50? Hell, even 25 dollar ebay bulbs are overpriced if you look at the bulk price of actual leds, PCB boards, etc... Probably cost no more than 2 or 3 bucks.. But it's the labor involved in making sure the solder mating said LEDs to PCB boards (SMD or what have you) and the overall QA that makes some bulbs pricier.

YMMV everyone, get what you feel like /endthread

Thoughts on these for the rear turn signals: http://store.ijdmtoy.com/7440-7443-T...-p/20-432a.htm

And I think I'm sticking with red!

Agreed, probably a little strong on the verbiage, wasn't trying to provoke.

I wholeheartedly agree that V3 tritons are probably the best you can get, I have gen 2 switchbacks out front, they're selling gen 2.5 now. If I were in the market for switchbacks again though, I'd give these a shot.

And while I agree with quality of a product being important, but if the eBay bulbs are just as bright as the Triton, I could buy four or five sets of them before I get to the cost of the Tritons and I'd bet even the Tritons would be on there last leg.

Woah, after looking at this post I feel like I have to get the V3 Tritons!
Thanks!

Are OHM Resistors and Resistor Adapters necessary?
I don't mind shelling out the extra $, but don't want to purchase if unnecessary.

If you do the relay flasher mod (I'm to lazy to link it right now, search "eliminate hyper flashing"), then you don't need the fuses/Adapters.

If you're not doing the relay flasher mod, buy the Resistors.

You don't need resistors if you are buying v3 tritons. They come with built in resistors you can enable or disable.

If you buy any led besides v3 tritons you will need resistors.

Check it, new V3 Tritons come with resistor/resistor harness optional.

My gen2 v3 tritons came with a resistor you can use or disable by pulling a fuse on the control box.

Weird that the 2.5 it's a option and costs a lot extra. gen2 it was built in
