Removing daytime running lights?

Guys I am new to acura and this forum, and I posted this in the mods section but now I feel it should go here so sorry about the double post. On my last car (VW Jetta) I was able to disable the DRL's by removing the lights switch and blocking off a connector, is this possible on my 07 tl type-s or is there another fix for this?

Sorry but both places are the wrong place. Moving this to 3G TL main forum and deleting your other thread..

Why would anyone want to do this? It won't save a thimbleful of fuel if that is the reason. It makes about as much sense as removing your windshield wipers to reduce weight.

It's personal prefence. I think cars look much more aggressive and sporty with no running lights. Plus, I like the look of just my orange parking lights on. And please don't tell me it's a safety thing, there is no eveidence to support that claim.

Actually, there is a lot of evidence to demonstrate that the DRLs are effective in reducing accidents, not only between two vehicles, but also involving pedestrians. I won't belabor the point, however. It is your choice and I respect that. Welcome to the forum.

I disabled the DRL on my Passat the same way your talking about .. unfortunately you can't do it on TL... BTW I believe in DRL .. I used my fogs as DRL to save the H7's in the headlights. And yes lots of studies prove they are benificial. This the the first thing CanaDUH did ahead of the US.

If you want them disabled that badly....you could just swap headlight units with someone with an 04-06 TL haha...I doubt ANYONE would ever do that just to get rid of DRL's

That wouldnt work because you would still have the DRL connector output empty and then the light would come on.

I pulled my fuse, bottom row, 3rd from left

Yes, DRL warning light stays on unless headlights are on (stays on in any position that the DRL should be on in) but I don't mind

I think DRL looks cheesy

I bought an inexpensive "APC" fog light kit w/ wired harness (as a +, I got a remote to turn on and off), ($12.95). I pulled the socket and got some spare 9005 bulb sockets from Autozone to wire into the harness. I changed out the bulbs as well. Now I can run with headlights, fog lights and DRL at full watts. A lot of light to the front.

You are still going to get that yellowish light because you won't have full wattage powering the DRL's.

I also had the 'electrical-tape' drl delete on my Audi.

I pulled the fuse in my 07 TL. The warning light stays on like people have said but I've gotten used to it.

And, not to get off-topic, DRL's really only prove to be effective in reducing accidents in places that have large amounts of fog and wierd sunlight schedules. Northern Europe (Norway, Finland, Iceland, Greenland, etc.) and upper regions in Canada where ambient light is low and fog and icy mist are more common.

In the states on the other hand there is no conclusive evidence that DRL's do anything to prevent accidents. Think about it. Is it that hard to differentiate a moving vehicle with one that isn't? DRL's are just auto-makers attempting to market safer vehicles to the general public.

I personally don't like DRL's. Very cheesy look. I remember I used to just see old people riding around with their lights on in the daytime. I agree with removing them and I am happy as hell that they are not on the 06 TL, or I would have already found a way to get them off! LOL!

Pulling the fuse doesn't hinder any of the other functions of the headlights does it?

Nope, the only thing it does is have a little yellow "DRL" symbol light up in the dash, but its really small and you can get used to it easily.

Insurance companies give discounts to cars with DRLs. For those of you who want to disable your DRLs, you may be reported accordingly.

First of all...Welcome! Now...I don't think insurance companies would give you a discount if they didn't believe DRLs made a difference. They are kind of in business to make money. Personally as I drive down the street I notice cars with DRLs significantly faster than cars without. My only wish is that they were not yellow. I think I will mod that.

Just to verify, It is the red 10A fuse for small lights. Is that correct?

Exactly!! So Ironic....if you have them you don't want em and if you don't, you wish they were at least an option. Almost like girls who have straight hair want curly hair and nobody else gets it. Human nature: we always want what we don't/can't have.

The quest to be different......and have people ask "hey, wait a sec....howdya do that???"

Ok so I obviously pulled the incorrect fuse. I feel like a total newb!

In looking in the manual I don't see a fuse solely dedicated to DRL's. So which fuse is it? It is under the hood but which fuse? Does anyone have the number? Thank you so much!

So, if everyone had DRLs you wouldn't notice any difference, right?

I guess then we'll have to have strobe lights on the roof, like school buses?

If you can't see a 2 ton vehicle without DRLs you should turn in your driver's license.

If you lived up here where thay have been manditory for years now you would see the benifit ... we can pick out US cars easily .. they are the ones that are harder to see in poor lightin situations like at dusk or patruially into the sun ... grey cars in the evening .. grey cars on dirty snowy roads.

You will notice a different .. you will be able to see all the cars .. I'll keep mine thanks .. that way when you pull out to pass someone and I'm coming the other way I don't end up as your hood decoration .. its a proven saftey issue that works .. we were just smarter up here and didn't bend to the lobbying against them.

Prolly the first thing we did where we didn't follow the US puppy fashion .. and it was a right one.

I might be wrong because I didnt do this, but I think the fuses for the DRLs are located in the left kick panel arent they? And on the cover that you take off to access the fuses, there is a guide to which fuse is which so check that first.

Well I am not sure because I took the fuse out of the engine bay fuse box. Maybe I am way off and that is probably my issue.

Any help from anyone who has done it?

I have an 07 as well and, thus, have those damn DRLs. It wouldn't be too bad if they weren't yellow!!!! I thought an easy fix would be to buy some PIAA 9005's and stick in there and change the color to a brighter white/blue...wrong!!! Low voltage makes them look just like the OEM Sylvanias.

Question: is there an easy way to at least send full power to them so we can change the color with whatever 9005 bulb we want??

Taking them out only leaves a black hole...what else did you do? And did you fix it to where the yellow DRL light on the cluster doesn't come on?

When you say low voltage, you mean 60W? This might work.

PIAA 9005 Intense White
Headlight Replacement Bulb
Specifications
Mounting Type: 9005 (HB3)
Power Consumption: 60W
Color Temperature: 4100K
DOT compliant

That is the EXACT bulb I've already purchased. Once installed its looks like the OEM Sylvania. Problem is that Acura cuts the actual voltage to the headlight, thus making any and all bulbs yellow in color.

I'm sorry to hear that as I was thinking of getting this also.

I was instantly disgusted with the DRL's on my S, especially more-so after I changed my fog light bulbs. Just the damn pee-yellow color looks so cheap, can't stand it. SO what I did was take the fuse out. YEAH it says DRL on my gauges but I dont really care, its a real small indicator. Tried simply unplugging them but the DRL light comes on either which way so may as well just pull the fuse.

I read a post somewhere where a guy installed a 9005 LED light. The voltage was low, but at least it was white. Don't remember if he still had the DRL light in the gauge due to the low-draw from the LED, though. I've not searched too hard, but what little I have done, I've not found a 9005 LED.
