remove/don't remove resonator
remove/don't remove resonator
I've searched this site and Vtec.net for people who have replaced their stock 2004 air filter with a K&N and then decided to remove the resonator. It seems the jury is still out on any gains vs driveability/noise problems. Any ideas...until Comptech comes out with an Icebox intake?
I don't think it's worth the effort for what you get. Either replace it with a CAI if that's what your looking for, or leave it as is. Search my threads and you'll find a lot of information.

but roadrage didnt even post in this thread and he still got creidt... what about me
The intake resonator gets more bad press on the Internet than practically any other piece. The fact is, the intake system is tuned to ensure the best overall airflow, and to produce a broad torque curve. Some aftermarket CAI's may show a peak HP gain of a few ponies, but a loss in the power midrange. Resonators not only reduce intake roar (which some younger members and Civic owners seem to think is cool), but they can be tuned to provide optimum airflow throughtout the range. Recall that the TL's intake manifold has adjustable "flaps" - these are designed to work to adjust intake runner length to optimize both low and high RPM power - just as VTEC is mechanically oriented to provide proper breathing, so is the intake system, including the resonator.
For the scientifically inclined amongst you, recall your studies of Helmholtz resonance principles - just as a tuned port in a speaker can allow for increased efficiency and output in the bass range. One can plug up a speaker port, but generally it shifts the bass resonance point up, and output falls off as a 4th order integral below that - and distortion rises as excursion capability decreases.
I blocked off the resonator on my S2000, but after very careful studies of the airflow, gutting of the stock airbox, and the installation of a "ram air" snorkel in the cool, high pressure zone just in front of the lower radiator shroud. That is quite different than just yanking out pieces.
Pull the resonator if you want more intake noise, hissing, and a possible hi-rpm boost - but I doubt it will affect overall performance.

I just installed this same filter in my 04 5AT TL and I think this is the best bang for the buck! $37 & 10min to install(Actually 30min wait to reset the ECU)...can't beat that! The TL is definitely more responsive throughout the RPM band and did not increase the sound by much.
