Rear Window Shade/Screen

Hi Guys,

I'm pretty sure most of us, including me, barely use the rear passenger seats, most of the time, it's just my wife and I, the only passenger on the TL-S.

Now that our baby is arriving next month, I'm worry about the sun the little boy might get, so I've been searching for a nice, reliable and good quality rear window shade or screen, and cannot find one.

I know I could get tint, but that's not what I'm looking for.

Any recommendation?

For the rear window, and perhaps also for the rear passenger windows?

Thanks!

I would just tint the windows, it will most likely last longer and it will add to the look of the car.

My mom had a rear sun screen in her 07 Camry that worked pretty well. I'm not really sure where to get an aftermarket one though.

Why not get window tint?

It will reduce the heat from the sun burning up your child in the back seat
It will reduce the overall temperature inside the car so it will not be as hot inside the car compared to a car with NO tints.
Because it keeps the temperature inside the car lower, you're AC will not be required to work harder to keep the inside feeling cool.

Imagine a car with no tint on a 100F day. You will have to keep your AC fan on full blast and it will take forever to cool down the inside of your car because of the sun constantly heating it up.

Now if you have 5% or 20% tint your AC will make the inside of your TL cooler a lot quicker and stay cool because the tint keeps sun and heat from entering your car compared to no tints!

You also have added privacy. You can leave things in the back seat or on the floor and thieves won't be able to easily see it when walking by your car.

Tint has alot of "Pros". I don't see why people are so against it. It even makes the car look better (I know this is the last of your concern) but I just don't understand when people want to avoid tinting a car. It's always the 1st thing I do.

To be honest, tint has NO effect on ambient temperature in the car, it's physically impossible. However, tint does affect surface temperature, and on a black interior it can make a big difference. I have 17% in front and 5% in rear. Hot summer days still make the car super hot but when you touch the surface it won't burn you as much

OP, glad to see you're not panicking & buying a mini-van

If you're just looking for a simple, inexpensive solution...

When our kids were younger we used a couple of static cling tinted sheets similar to these

Not the most attractive, but the worked.

Friends used this type for the rear window.

I'd also go with tint, like viet said, there are tons of pros to getting it. And being the back window you're worried about, you'll be able to get it tinted pretty dark. I think 5% is the legal limit for rear windows here in FL. (Rear meaning back and side windows)

I would ditto tint. My friend just got his RL done with 3M and for one it looks better and it definitely reduces infrared transmission into the car. Put your arm up on the window sill in the sun with tint and it doesnt get nearly as hot as it would have with a bare window. I think even basic tint can block around 35% IR.

Depending on the tint and quality you get, you can reduce infrared transmission a ton. works well in hot sunny climates. You need to look at infrared transmission, not light transmission if you want to block heat. Most films already block the majority of UV rays.

Your tint shop should be able to tell you the specifics and recommend a few different films.

Pretty sure we all saw it but there's no reason to not want it. It's cheap for the advantages it has. I see places all over where I live, $100 for the whole car.

yep. at least for the rear window there's probably nothing you can put there that isn't illegal that would block a significant amount of sun besides tint.

If you tint the rear you might as well do the rear 3 windows at the very least.

tint ftw x 2 and then if you want a window shade get that too. 3G Tls look weird without tint. actually most cars look weird without some kind of tint.

Has to be wrong dude!! Window tint is designed to reduce the amount of Thermal rays let in.. That's what it was made for.. Less thermal rays equals less solar heat created! It has to make it cooler that's what it's designed to do, whether it for homes or cars.. Reduces temp in homes resulting in lower energy bills.. Tint world.com has a pretty good article about WHY..Tint world says they can reduce the heat in your car 40-70% depending on which film you get..

Just go to walmart and pick up the cheapest window screen, or search craigslist... Also, I suggest getting a seat cover, or use a lot of padding under the child seat, cuz his/her car sear will destroy the leather

If u don't want tint, fine but it is by far the best solution to reduce the interior heat of your car. I have a black on black TL and went straight for the ceramic tint. Not very dark at all but the thermal suppression is the best out there. Cheap tint will give limited help. The metallic imbedded tint is better but not as good as ceramic. I also did the Wal-mart thing and got a rear screen that just sticks on the inside of the rear window and I use that too. In San Antonio it is hot and this helps even more in the summer.

Thats just a ridiculous statement. you think that solar films cannot reduce the thermal load transferring thru glass?

yeah, roll down the tinted window with the sun on your face and you can easily tell there's a difference.

any car if left long enough will get hot under the sun regardless of tint.

Also, paperboy is forgetting he has a car painted black.

Regardless of the age of the thread, other people might be helped by the info. I do appreciate you pointing out how months and time work though Einstein.

Babies R Us, my friend. Also, google will be much more fruitful than Acurazine.

I tried the same thing, the only after market ones i found were at pepboys and i returned it before i left the parking lot. Im not sure if you can get them professionally installed like the BMW ones have stock but tinting the windows 15 % all around by a professional should do you good. It can also be professionally removed and look like it was never on their, any sun shade you find will look awkward in that car. Stock ones are best.
