Rear brakes 420.00

I had my 05 TL at 32,000 in for a B service. I was told that at my next service I will need a rear brake replacement at the tune of 420.00. Are you kidding me????
What are my optoins? Has any one had thiers done at like a Midas or any like type brakes service shop? 450.00 is simply insane!

check tirerack.com.

Did they tell you what's wrong with it? If it's just new pads and new/resurfacing rotors, you can get new (arguably better) aftermarket ones for less.

Thats just TOOOO MUCH.. I baught my pads from Acura dealer for 47.00 or 57.00 (cant remember), took to local brake shop to resurface rotors, and labor for puttin in pads and all was around 70.00. I remember all in all it was around 125.00.

They or you need to be more specific. Is there something wrong? Are rotors damages and need to replace them?

Normally here, when customer comes in for brake service and rotors are damaged and car is under warranty we would warranty rotors. Unless its an abvious situation where customer is at fault for something.

I replaced front brakes also. And I did them at 38k miles. Rear should not be much more.

$420 is alot for brakes. Havent done them on the TL yet, but I paid $80 for 4 rotors and another $100 for pads and but them on myself on my vette. And that's all 4 corners, not just the rears which are usually cheaper.

for $420 you better be getting Brembo calipers with the pads.

This price was for cutting the rotors and pads. Just the rear! So I am thinking hell no, and not using a dealer. That is sooooooo crazy!

Cutting the rotors? They better be replacing those rotors for that price.

Was in the shop today for my inspection, rear pads are really low, they quoted me $250.00(with cutting). Came home ordered them online for $45.00. The rotors are ok, so i'll be putting them on myself and saving.

Seems way too high. Also seems soon for the rear. Did you actually see how much pad is left ?
Don't go to Midas. At least get the OE pads and have a friend or local recommended indie do the work. Since it's the rear, some would just replace the pads themselves and leave the rotors alone.

$420 is a lot. I have an 04 6MT with 48K miles. I only had to replace my front pads (that i did myself) so far.

yeah, the rear rotors only take 20 minutes tops for each side (give or take depending if the screws that mount the rotors are rusted and what kind of tools you have). Maybe plop on another 20-30 minutes on top of that if you take things real slow and also put the pads on.

Brakes are dead easy to do yourself BTW. Few basic sockets, and a $10 caliper expander and you're good to go.

I must be getting old. I just don't want to wrench on cars anymore. If a dealer would charge a reasonable fee and do quality work I would be all over it. Until then, I'll keep doing all this stuff myself.

High prices + poor service = no thanks!

Yet you would be suprised how much could go wrong. if you dont feel comfortable doing the brakes, dont do them. its one thing if you mess up putting in a headlight, its nother thing if you cant stop in time...

Fair enough. Have an experienced friend or a good book around the first time. Just saying if your a reasonably competent mechanical type person, its not a hard job. Something you could show someone how to do in 15 minutes.

And....once you have successfully worked on brakes (disc) you will realize how silly it is to get so scared of working on them. You just have to get over that initial "Oh my god, I'll kill myself" factor.
Tips: Never disassemble both sides at once. The other size is always a good reference for how things should look. Also, digital cameras are great for documenting. Just refer to your own picture if you get confused

Right. I know. Especially for this car. I understand that this car is very easy. The thing is, most people dont even want to change their oil, and I will assume that a brake job is much more advanced. Some brake systems are complicated and take a lot of time...Acura's are one of the more easier systems I've worked on. Unless the Acura is your first car, you are going to have reservations about pulling the pads.

This thread isnt about telling the world you are the shit with working on your car. Wow, you can do your brakes, thats so awesome. It is easy for me to tell anyone -oh shit, you bent your valves, well just fix them, its simply- Yeah, it is easy for me. I like to take the approach that the lay person does not know what is going on with their car. A DIY for an oil change can still be hard if the person has never lifted a tool in their life. The point I was making is don't take on something because other people tell you it is easy. Make sure you feel comfortable and have a basic knowledge of everything. A brake job might take time to get used to. If you have to resurface the calipers that involves a lot more than just pulling the pads. I dont want this thread to convince anyone that brakes are basic and dont deserve attention. I'm not saying that anyone needs to run off to their mechanic, but if you are going to pull the pads/rotors - feel comfortable with it.

You're right. If I sounded like I was bragging or trying to convince anyone uncomfortable with working on their car to do so then I was misunderstood and/or not clear enough (sorry). All I was trying to say is that brakes often have a much higher "fear" or "magic" factor associated with them than more critical, complex and/or expensive assemblies in a car. Sorry to have made the thread digress.

Scottieb: any update?

Heh heh... On my G35, it is actually EASIER to change the brakes then it is the oil

Changing the oil on my G35 requires me to remove something like 22 bolts, to remove the lower air dam and lower engine cover.

I just did the brakes on our TL a few weeks ago. I had it down to like 5 minutes per side. (Air tools are your friends, especially an air-jack )

Sorry. The second part of my post was not referring to you or what you said. I usually put a little * in between paragraphs. I dont like posting more than once. Didnt mean for it to be directed at you whatsoever.

I replaced the front pads and rotors on my TL at 53k kms. I watched my mechanic do it...its very easy. I think he charged me $75 labour + parts.

Cool

Just to add some informations;

I had the rear brake rotors and brake pads replaced under warranty 2 months ago by the local Acura dealer at 36,000Km (Approx. 22,500 miles) because the rear rotors were severely groved and rusted.

The dealer told me that the parts alone were $377 CDN plus labour & taxes.

So for $400US, I would suggest that you get new rotors since they can't remove much from these as they are not vented.

Best regards

frenchnew
