Rattle for Instrument Panel/Steering Column

I have had a rattle coming from somewhere in the instrument panel or the steering column. The Dealer replaced the steering column cover and it still rattles. It sound sort of springy rather than just a tapping rattle. Any one have this problem?

torca,
I know this may sound strange but check and make sure it's not your driver's side sun visor making the noise. The back of teh vanity mirror rattles up against the light that's stitched into the headliner. I thought one of my rattles was coming from the instrument panel as well, it sounded 'springy' just like you mentioned but it turned out to be the vanity mirror. An easy way to check this is to drive with the sun visor in the down position so the mirror doesn't rattle up against the light. Let me know if this is the source of your rattle.

Where do you want me to start? #2 is the plastic cover that vibrates occasionally. In addition, Nav/stereo/storage bin areas make numerous popping and creaking sounds.

Ah, good call bringing this picture up, Novice... my fellow partner in crime helping fight away the rattles in our first year third-gen TLs.

Although I agree you should check the visor. Mine was giving a springy noise too so I finally put in those clear dots on the light cover to help dampen the two surfaces.

Sorry. I meant to say #1 also makes noise. Lore. I took care of the visor as well. If I put more foam in this car, it will float in water!

might be front left tweeter that lies on top of the dash. mine was vibrating for a while, creating a very "springy" noise... kind of like a metal vibration. i dont know if it's still there, i've given up and just play my music instead of listening for rattles ...

I re-read your post and realized that I used to have a springy sound coming from the steering wheel area too. To duplicate it, I would gently pound the steering wheel (where you'd hold it). If you can hear the springy noise, it's probably some wiring underneath the cover that the dealer needs to tie up or fasten together.

Thanks for your help. It is not the visor as I had the dealer replace that. I will check the steering wheel, the plastic cover and stalk.

I've had the dealer replace mine too and it still made the springy noise - hence the little white rubber dots that help prevent contact.

I have been dealing with rattles and vibrations in my TL since the day I drove off in it. This was made me one unhappy TL owner. My big problems were:

1. Rattle in Instrument Panel/Steering Column

2. Crackling/Rattle in front passenger door

After 5 visits and attempts at my dealer, the Steering wheel sound has been fixed (finally) and the door problem is still there. The steering wheel one was actually behind the air conditioner vent to the left of the wheel (near the drivers door). The sevice guy figured that one out. I owe that guy big time... because this was a huge problem, and I heard that damn sound 24/7! Thankfully, it's gone.

The door is another story. I need to go back for a sixth time. I will demand a new door, becaue I never what to have to deal with this again.

I tell you guys, if I knew about how BAD the fit and finish was going to be, I would what never bought this car. It is a complete dissappointment. I have never completely enjoyed the car because of all the rattles, crackling and interior sounds that the car makes.

i will drop this car much sooner than I thought. This was going to be a keeper.

tap the top of your steering wheel kinda hard...and if you hear a rattle..it's the rattle from number 2.
