Range indicator??

The question I have involves the range indicator on the MID. The problem I'm having is that the range is dropping down to around 30 and the gas light comes on, so I obviously fill the tank. For the last three fill-ups I have only been able to put around 13 or so gallons before the tank is full. If im not mistaken that means there should still have been about 4 or so gallons left in the tank. Then why the gas light and range indicator being so low. I average about 19 mpg mainly city. I have only 1700 miles on the car. Any thoughts??

Better be safe then stuck in the middle of nowhere or worse in a very bad neighbourhood with no gas in the tank!

Also, please keep in mind that running any recent car dry is a very bad idea.

The fuel pump in the tank relies on the gasoline to keep cool and also going to the bottom with suck up wathever dirt builded up over time as everytime you put gas in the car, a little bit of dirt/water get into the tank from the underground gas station reservoirs.

This in turn will seriously affect the lifetime of that gas pump in our cars.

Just my

Best regards from Montreal

I don't trust the mileage indicator. It all depends on how fast your goin and how many RPMs are used

I think the computer calculates the range based on what the mpg is at the time. That is, if it said the range was 100 mi. while I was doing 70 on the freeway for a while, and then exited onto a local road, at 35~ w/ traffic, then it would show a far lower range.

It's not dead-on accurate, but it's still pretty reliable.

Talking

I have seen my car's empty light come on with more than 1/3 the tank's capacity of fuel in it. The MID said the car would go about 50 more miles. I was averaging 12 MPG that day. I got out of the track, re-setted the MID and after driving back to the hotel for about 10 minutes, the MID indicated 150 miles and the light was off.

Yeah I guess the 4 gallons in there..because like ndx2 is saying if you going @ 70mph on freeway and run your range down to 10-15 miles and then all of a sudden start doing 35 in a stop ang go traffic the range would have to go to negative (or to 0 in our case)...so I guess it is just more of a CYA (cover your ass) concept. but If I am in the city I often let it run down to 0 miles to fill it up ...and I fill up about 13-14 gallons so I am not driving the car dry either...
