So to remove the filter, you'd have to rotate the filter counter-clockwise.

get one of these it really helps getting the oil filter loose enough for your hand to unscrew it. I got mines at walmart. Im sure any local automotive shop should have them.

You should never have to use something like that to loosen the filter, unless it is really oily and that is a bad sign. The filter should be on there 1/4 turn from tight, not enought to require a wrench.

there's nothing wrong with using a filter wrench to take the filter off. i use one and if u've ever had the car at a stealer u don't know how tight they put the filter on anyway. my friend's accord was impossible to remove the filter without a wrench.

just make sure that when u put the new filter on to hand-tighten only.

Wow...I was doing the oil change today and when it was time to take of the filter, I tought I can take it off with my hand....but no go! I tried and tried and I could not do it.

So I went to autozone and got me the belt strap thingy and was able to take, however, with still a good amount of force. This is the first time I do the oil change and so it appears that the previous install was done at a dealership or mechanic and put it supertight.

So when it was time for me to put the new filter, I just did it hand tight. I always done that to my previous cars and its always been good!

Thanks for the help!

tips: partially fill the new filter with fresh oil- reduces time to full oil pressure
Make sure to get some oil on the filter threads and the rubber oring, that helps seal and makes it easier to remove next time

Quickie Shops often use the low man on the pole to do the draining and filter changes- gorillas installing filters hand tight and then as much as they can...thinking that makes sure it wont fall off, but actually deforms the rubber seal and can cause leak plus hard to remove next time---but they dont care- its not their car and they probably wont be there next time anyway

Check the old oring came off with the filter and is not still on the engine- thats a big problem!

Just a messy tip a mercedes mechanic taught me.

If the filter is stuck on hard and you cant get it off, hammer a screwdriver into it and twist it off using that. Cheaper than those strap things.

Also an old belt does the trick just as nicely.

^ - Interesting that a mbz mechanic told you that as hardly any of those cars use traditional oil filters

i wouldn't try hammering a screwdriver on our filters, it might damage the threads that hold the filter on. an oil filter wrench will cost <$10 at an auto shop.

the threads are only at the end, you poke the screwdriver thru the closed end/actually the side an inch down, not the end
This is an old mechanics trick to aid in draining filters located in places that will spill everywhere when removed--drain out most oil by giving it an air gap/opening on the filter itself (remove oil filler cap too- when draining oil)
Or filter is on super-tight- jab it and spin it!

A Clean trick is to place a gallon size ziplock bag around oil filter after its initial loose, add bag, keep spinning, and you have a contained situation

I hate it when the shop guys screw it on so tight that it takes the strength of an enraged gorilla to loosen it...!

Dealerships are pretty bad with cranking on the filter as well. Highly annoying

Try using a plastic bag to cover the oil filter when removing. Lessons the chance of oil spillage from filter.
