Sunny Ohio day today, been pretty wet the past few days but today the roads were completely dry and it's about 50 degrees Fahrenheit out. I decided to give my car a nice wash and wax. After washing my car, I went for a short drive down the highway, couldn't have been more than a 10 mile long drive. When I arrived at the Mexican restaurant, I noticed that the back of my car was already dirty. This included the sides behind the wheels and the rear bumper all the way to the top of the spoiler. The roads were dry and clean from what I could tell.

This leads me to believe that my exhaust is blowing out something that it shouldn't be blowing out. I have no idea how it could get that dirty that quick to the point where if I softly rub my finger across the bumper it leaves tracks where my finger rubbed.

i'm a NBP owner, so i'll answer.

you drive a black car. it gets dusty and dirty stupid quick. a proper sealant and wax will help deter the dust and road mist. it'll allow the dust and crap to not stick to your paint. the top shelf on the rear bumper will always be the worst. it likes to collect up there and stay put...gravity is a bitch.

what kind of wax do you use? how do you apply it?

also, carry a nice plush microfiber towel with you to wipe the dust off. optimum spray works great too...just don't use the towel/spray if your car is exceptionally dirty...you'll induce scratches.

if all else fails, call paypal.

 

My only suggestion is to put on splash guards? It might help...

*EDIT* - I realized that you do have splash guards. My only guess is that fine dirt and dust get kicked up while you drive. After all, you did say that the roads were dirty and clean. I also noticed that your driveway(?) is gravel and rocks. That might be the cause as well?

 

I don't think the driveway is the problem. It's just such a well distributed coating of dust/dirt that it leads me to believe that it is the exhaust.

 

Well, I'm stumped...I guess you could always go get a smog check??

While I have the total opposite of NBP, the back of my car gets dirty very quickly. It's the first part of the car that shows any dirt after a wash.

 

i'm sure your ohio roads have the same crap on them that our roads here have in prep for snow or ice...a mix of dirt, dust and residual salt dust. i noticed a light layer of crap on the bumper of my TL when i got home yesterday when i drove her. cali duster and a little detail spray to finish...all clean again.

 

This is the only reason I hate NBP, I used to had 99 AV6 NBP and after I wax the car dust start to collect immediately.

 

I need to get my hands on some of this detail spray that everyone keeps mentioning. Also interested in the cali duster. Would you mind linking me?

cali duster: DO NOT RUB your car...just lightly go over it to pick up any dust off the car. if you car is dirty...wash it.

detail spray....depends on what you want. lots of products out there.
i use meg's last touch detail spray. buy it bulk (save $$$ over the OTC bottles). dilute 1:1 in a spray bottle...good to go!

CALIFORNIA DUSTER IS THE BOMB!!! I have a NBP. I took a nice 3 hours washing my car tuesday. Like everyone says, NBP collects dust and pollen easily and very noticeable.

I use my california duster on my NBP TL 1x a day everyday after washing the car and it keeps the car looking like I just got done washing it. IT'S AMAZING TO SEE HOW GOOD IT PICKS UP THE DUST / POLLEN AFTER JUST 1 PASS WITH THE DUSTER.

How long did you wait after waxing your car?

 

I've heard of people adding a ground strap...which supposedly can alleviate some of the dust issues...

Supposedly the car can generate static while driving it...the ground strap hangs down in the back under the car and touches the ground...hence the name.
I've seen forklifts using a piece of cable or chain to do the same thing....

of course people will tell you that you got something hanging down or falling off your car....

Never would have thought wheel rolling along the ground would generate static...but depending on what shoes I wear grocery shopping make a difference on whether I get shocked or not...

Just gotta clean your car better. 75% of the time there is still dust/dirt/whatever still on the car after a wash. Sheep skin + Buckets WITH Grit Guards + wash twice if heavily soiled + left to right motion. Always worked for me.

 

detail spray....mist and wipe. now car is all shiny. gets all the residual water spots you leave behind after washing. also gets bird bombs off your car too (spot treating).

 

after you washed and detailed your car with meguiar product then put car cover on and stored in a garage, problem solved.

 

Did you apply a tire shine? Maybe it wasn't dry and it dirtied up you back end when you drove it too soon.

I am qualified because I do have a NBP.

 

It has nothing to do with the color or the fact that your car may or may have not been waxed in a long time.
The reason is because its still winter and there is a LOT of junk on the roads such as salt, sand, dirt, dust...basically everything. Even if the roads were perfectly dry they are still coated with junk. Once we get a couple days of nice solid rain it will clean the roads up and the problem will go away to some extent. There will always been dust collecting on cars, but it is without a doubt worse during the winter season, and is obviously going to be more noticeable on a clean black car. This has nothing to do with your exhaust. Oh and last thing, it always collects the most on the rear of the car. There is a lot of turbulence back there from the air flow of the car and thats where it ends of sitting.

Detail Spray Procedure- Get a CLEAN microfiber rag, and lightly mist about 2 sq ft of car, wipe with microfiber rag, it should shine, if it smears, you put too much spray on. IF you drop the rag on the ground, get a clean one, and toss that one in the laundry, it will pick up grit from the ground, and you will be "sanding" your car instead of wiping it clean.

I get my detail rags at Menards- they have them cheap sometimes and they are nice sized. Target also has them in their automotive section and they were not too expensive.

I enjoy posts like these, because I always end up learning more. I always figured dust settled on top of the bumper because of the airflow on top and bottom of the car. The area in between (back of the car) has no air flow. Sorta like the area behind the cab on a truck. If that makes sense.

 

im going to throw my 2 cents in. I own one and have the same dusty problem. I find its just because of dust/dirt on the roads anything over 5mph is always going to stir up dust.... I was told quick detail spray and a rag to fix it but my opinion is even if i spray that on the dirt the dirt is still there its just slightly lubricated dirt so now when I wipe that lubricated dirt with my nice soft cloth its just like using wet sand paper just a fine grit wet sand paper. SO i learned to live with the dust and just wash the car once it gets past the point that Im tired of looking at it.

 

I just ordered myself a California Car duster so I'm gonna see how that works. My biggest problem here in FL is the dew (tons of water spots) and the pollen (big yellow water spots >.>). I'll post here again to tell you guys how the duster works.

 

Duster probably wont help much once dew hits and dries on any dust or pollen. I have seen a lot of mixed reviews on the cali dusters. Never really searched here but the bmw forum said it leaves fine scratches granted most fine scrathes can be buffed/waxed out.

wash and wax then park in garage. I DO NOT drive if it even looks like it could rain. Usually after 5-10 days of sunny driving i wash wax repeat

 

Cali duster will scratch you paint, I had them before and I used on my Accord after the wipe I can see streak going across the paint surface.

 

I keep forgetting to mention a swiffer duster. has anyone tried one? i was wondering about one of those little ones you dust at home with.

I have never used a cali-duster. My wheels seem to get dirty quicker than the rest of the car. I use the bucket with car wash, water hose, microfiber towels and then quick detailer.

 

I have a lot of scratches on the car. But, meh, who cares. NBP is quite a soft paint. My friend's stock IP paint of her G35 coupe, which has similar mileage and is similarly old, still looks brand new.
