Question for the LED experts...

Originally posted this in the "Ramblings" bu got no response, I figure you guys with your blue LED mods could help.

I have a mid-90's VW, and the master key has a small 1.5 Volt bulb to be used to find the lock in the dark. The incondesent (spelling?) is not very bright. And I am hoping to switch it out with a super white LED that could be soldered to the wiring, if not a direct replacement.

My questions are:

1) What stores can I go to in order to buy LED's and make sure they fit?

2) If I have to buy online how do I make sure the LED will be the correct size and voltage?

Additional info: engraved on the side of the bulb is, *1.5V 0.09W-A. The bulb is just over 1/2" from tip to base, and has a diameter just over 1/8" (constant diameter over the entire length). The battery is a watch type, thin battery, with 625A engraved on it.

TIA

LED's normally take approx 20milliamperes to operate - although there are a few variants that take more, some less. Try a Radio Shack and see if they can help - you'll not only need a superbright LED but also a dropping resistor (probably) small enough to fit in the enclosure. It's a project that shouldn't be that hard to do.
