Question

First let me say, I've been trolling around this site for almost a year and all the info has been great.

I finally pulled the trigger and put down a deposit for an SSM/Ebony Navi on 1-22-05. My dealer here in Houston didn't have one on the lot but said there was one on its way that would be here in "a week and a half." He didn't have the VIN yet. So I went in this past Saturday to see if they had received the VIN yet. They had and my dealer said the car would be here "Wednesday or Thursday." Well, I called today and my dealer hasn't heard anything yet.

So finally, my question. How long does it take from when the dealer gets the VIN to the car shipping? The wait is killing me and my weekend plans kinda hinge on having the car or not. Anyone have any idea of when I should expect the car?

If the car was expected yesterday or today I think the dealer should be able to find out where the transporter is. Hope for the best and delay a decision on the weekend as long as possible. We expect a review.

Don't count on it...

If the dealer doesn't have the VIN, they don't have a car.

If they had one on order they'd have the VIN since that's assigned the day the vehicle is scheduled for production. And if it has shipped the dealer can track the location of the car in transit. All this information is available to the dealer online through the Honda ordering system.

I think you're being strung along as they try to locate one, sorry to say.

They had the VIN on Saturday. When I put the deposit down almost 2 weeks ago, I was shown a printout of vehicles they were getting in. My car was on the list. The dealer is supposed to be calling me today to tell me where my car is.

VIN and location...

Once the vehicle reaches the nearest rail yard then it's at the mercy of the transport company that delivers it to the dealer. They'll typically wait for a full load of vehicles going to a particular place - may be all the same brand or mixed depending on how they work.

Being in Houston, I doubt that will be a problem or a delaying factor.

My dealer told me that they usually show up within 10 days of shipping - about a week and a half, as you were told. Mine called me the day they got the shipping notice and when I called them back 10 days later the car had just arrived that morning, so the timing is pretty reliable.

I missed the part in your post saying they DID have the VIN, although they had access to that from the day the car was scheduled for production, so why they put you off the first time is a head scratcher.

Hope it arrives shortly

Count 10 days from the day the dealer gets the VIN. You should get it around that time

Someone on this forum have posted a similar topic to yours. The dealership told him to put a down payment and wait for the car he wants. A few weeks went by, still nothing.... I would never give anybody money unless I see the car that I want at the dealership... I hate ordering , especially when it comes down to a car.

Dealers always want you to buy that day, so even if they don't have a car available, some may lie to you about a VIN to get you to pay that day. They'll tell you if you don't order it today, you may not get the great deal they're offering you today. When I purchased my car, they tried to pull that on me, I wanted a WDP TL, they didnt have that color, so I told them "when you get one in, call me" and I left. 2 months later, they called telling me they got a WDP for me... now 2 months prior to that, they told me they will have a WDP within 2 weeks. ... so I smelled BS.

good luck buddy and I mean it

Heard from the dealer today. They are getting a truck in tomorrow and my car will likely be on it. Let's hope.

I know the feeling having ordered 6 cars in years past, the last of which was a 1996 Ford Contour SE. Ordering is fun because you are specifying the exact car you want, but it has it's drawbacks, too.

The longest I ever waited for an ordered car was 13 weeks, 3 days: a 1988 Mustang LX 302CID. Because of CAFE requirements, Ford could only build 60,000 V8 Mustangs in 1987 and they had orders for 80,000. The extra 20,000 were pushed into the first part of the 1988 model year to be filled first. That meant my 1988 Mustang LX with the 302 small block had to wait until those 20,000 were done. My Mustang was built on January 4, 1988 and I received it January 19th. It was worth the wait because it turned out to be the most reliable car I've ever owned.. including my 2004 TL, and a ball to drive.

But waiting is hell, for sure.
