Purpose of a remote starter?
Purpose of a remote starter?
As i was walking towards my TL 2day in a mall parking lot, i overheard a couple of guys talking about a newly installed remote starter on an RSX.
I have heard/read alot about he remote starter in the forum recently. I just want to know the real use/purpose of the remote starter.
Advantages? Disadvantages? Cost?
Thanks.

Remote Starter
I have one.. I think it's great. It only comes into use if you are in an area that get's cold in the winter. You can start it from your house / apartment. Stay in the house for like 5-10 min, By the time you get to the car, it's toast and warm and also your windows are defrosted, no need to scrap!!... Just to keep in mind.. in some states it's illegal to have your car running while unattended. I have one with an extended range attachment I belive it's like maybe 1500feet.
warm ups
I am told the best way to warm up the car is to start it and drive it away after several seconds. Of course temps very and when it gets really low about 20 seconds ought to do. Sure the car is cold and your ass is freezing..
I am told the way to cause less wear and tear is to allow the tranny and engine to warm up at the same rate/time. Sure after the engine is running for 10 minutes it is nice and warm... but the tranny has not been moving at all and is cold. If you drive away the engine is happy but the tranny is not. This causes additional wear and tear on the tranny especially if you drive a 1/2 and try to do a 0-60 run in under 7 seconds.
So they say the best way is to start the car and after a few seconds or so to drive away and gently accelerate the car until it is warm.. this way both the tranny and engine are both warmed up.

I use mine all year! In the winter to heat up the inside and summer to cool it down. I could not live without it! Hard one on last 6 cars. Now with over a 1/4 range and verification on the remote as to starting status it is the best toy I have! I face I only buy automatics with climate control so I can have remote start and take full advantage of it! Basic units $150 BestBuy, long range DEI units $300 - $600 depends on features installed.
I just got a remote starter, and while I do love it, you have to make sure that the guys doing the installation know what they are doing.
I am facing a possible replacement cost of $90 for a steering collar that was damaged because the "recommended company" that installs them in my area did not know what the hell they were doing.
As for warmups, I like to give the car just enough time to get the oil flowing... that's all you really need. I do not understand the mentality that thinks just because the parts are machined so well that you don't need to warm up the engine before driving. If this is true, why do we need oil?

if you install the remote starter to toast the car up or turn on the ac, what happens if the heater is off when you turned off the car and when you remote start it, the heater is off? do you need to keep the heater on when you turn it off the night before???

nah, most instalers can either use the Acura FOB or will just give you a new one... depending on the model it is worth using the new FOB since it has greater range.
I know that the FOB I use with my car far exceeds the range of the one I originally got with my car.
That said, they both still work on the car so it's not like the originals are now useless

I was told that a oil company in Canada did a research on the fuel milage with cars that have a remote starter. On average, there is an increase of gas consumption 20%.
So, the oil companies just love remote starter.

This is probably true, I know that my fuel consumption went up quite a bit.
Until I realized that the reason it did was because I was being a moron and letting the car sit too long (just started it while getting dressed for work... so it sat for like 15 minutes). After a week it kinda takes a toll on the fuel economy.
The car doesn't need to warm up that much, so I stopped doing that. Lo and behold, the fuel economy has returned to semi-normal (since the car is new, the mpg is still a little low... should improve after the first oil change)
