Purchasing a used engine
Purchasing a used engine
I am currently looking to purchase a used engine for 06 TL. I like in northwest AR and there not many places I can go locally to find an engine let alone for a 3G TL. My question is have you bought an engine online (LKQ,EBay,Etc) and if so was it legit and worth it? Hesitant because I would need it shipped and you never really know exactly who you’re buying it from. Thank you!
In the shop we often dealt with different junkyards and LKQ was the best. They delivered quickly, taken the cores no trouble, parts arrived in boxes filled with foam or on a pallet, engines has intake/exhaust and other ports covered, and they stood by their warranty. (although we warrantied parts from LKQ very rarely).
We also had a blacklist of junkyards that we had bad experience with. Starting with bad engines (after putting it in into the car we discovered that engine had bad bearing or no compression on just one cylinder etc.), ground off/removed vin numbers (especially true with Honda transmissions... like who TF does that?), cores that were sitting for months never to be picked up, engines/trans/other parts arriving on the bed of pickup truck (smashed oil pans, valve covers, etc. forget about any plastic parts [sensors] surviving ) looking like they spend ~1 year outside (as they were probably stored outside for that long).
We used ebay couple times for JDM imported engines (mostly for subarus) and had no problem as far as I know. So as long as you're giving your card number to paypal/ebay and not directly to the clerk of some junkyard you should be protected.
So to summary, ebay will be more expensive but you should be protected. Otherwise LKQ was good. I don't have the mentioned blacklist so can't help with any other junkyard.

Search car-part.com for city region 'Memphis(AR, MS,TN)', there is one whole page of the 3.2 TL engines.
If you want to upgrade to a 3.5 J35A6 out of the 05+ Odyssey (LX/EX only), there is one whole page for that city region as well.
Teh CL's... $500 6spd TL - AcuraZine - Acura Enthusiast Community
To say the least, how well you do on picking the right one depends on your due diligence, a gut feeling, and / or a roll of the dice.
Here is another website to engine shop on:

Good Luck!
