Purchasing a TL Type S-need help
Hey guys! Names Peter and I'm new to acurazine. I'm actually trying to purchase an 07 TL Type S Nighthawk Blackpearl Black AT with approx 109,500 miles on it. My local acura deal just got it as a trade in and they are asking $15,999. What do you guys think? I know I should get it cause I've been eyeing on the type s for a while now, but price and mileage wise, you think it's worth it? Last thing I want to have is a transmission problem cause I've suffered a long time from that on my RX8 which is being fixed now. I've heard the TL S can have some tranny problems, especially at 100k+ miles. ALSO, the specific car does not have nice type s 'eggo' wheels so that's the downside about it. Let me know guys! Thanks.
Wait.. it doesn't have the Type-S wheels..? did the previous owner put Base wheels? ASPEC?!?!? Def negotiate but also check the common error prone places like compliance bushings, make sure 105K service has been done, check service records, transmission pressure sensors, DW1 Transmission fluid, etc etc. I got my 2008 TL-S from an Acura dealer too and was happy that they restored it to almost brand new condition. (full interior and exterior detail from an outside detailer, replaced cracked leather on passenger seat, replaced broken foglight, all fluid flushes)
The asking price is in line with what you would expect with that mileage. Definitely negotiate down though. Do make sure the dealer has done the 105,000 service though. You don't want to have to pay for that. Also, I haven't heard of very many problems with the '07 and newer TL transmissions. '04-'06 had some issues, but if you take care of the transmission in this car it should hopefully last you a long time, as long as the previous owner took care of it. In fact, you should find out if the 3rd and 4th gear transmission pressure sensors have been replaced. If not, insist the dealer replace them. It won't cost them much to do it. Good luck!

That's a good deal.. I'll definitely talk them down. I did check KBB and it is at $16.4k for a dealer price

You should be able to get the price down a bit. Make sure you check engine mounts, mirror acuators, oil pump, rear main seal, steering gear, power steering pump, trans mounts. Ask about 105 service, carfax, maint history, check all door jambs and paint to make sure nothing has been damaged as well as underneath. Brakes, tires, filters, etc, are they ok? Check interor seat(tend to wear alot) and as far as the tranny, ive seen two 07-08 go out. Ours are improved over the 04-06 like everyone said. Do a VERY good check and ask to see it on a lift.
Timing Belt, Water Pump, Accessory Belt and Tensioner are some of the normal parts replaced at 105,000. There are vendors here on the site that have kits that include all or most of those parts. While things are apart it probably wouldn't hurt to change out the thermostat as well.
From my research here on AZ I've learned that the '04-'06 transmissions need the 3rd and 4th pressure sensors replaced to keep the transmission happy. I am not as sure with the '07-'08s, but I believe it's a better safe than sorry kind of thing. I know starting in '07 there are now two 3rd gear sensors and one 4th gear sensor. They are not very expensive and can be done at home by yourself if you have a place to jack the car up. I will be doing it myself in the coming weeks.
