The article john posted refers to this one: http://automotivetech.org/at/hondatrans/
Hilarious, but I suppose that some MTF is still a 'permanent' fix, and that the problems are in my head..

I have the 3rd gear issue in my 08 TL-S, I havent taken it in yet, but you really can't just drop your car off and expect them to replicate this problem. You have to insist that a tech ride along with your so that you can show them the problem first hand. Its really the only way to get things rolling...
Acutually, the link works..if not, here it is again: Article with vid
if you guys just want the news video, here it is:

Actually, this is a very common problem. With our TL's and Civic Si's. My car had this problem, and my friend's Si did as well. It is documented thoroughly and often on this forum. The guaranteed way to fix it is to purchase the GM Synchromesh Friction Modified Manual Transmission Fluid, and change it out. The best way to do it is purchase 7 or 9 bottles of this stuff. Drain and fill the fluid, drive going through all the gears including reverse, for a couple of minutes, and repeat for a total of 3x. This ensures that all of the fluid gets changed out. The reason I say 7 or 9 is because the crankcase will only drain about 2.2-2.3 quarts at a time. Many people say it'll drain 3 quarts so you should refill 3 quarts, but I in fact have found that I only get about 2.2-2.3 quarts drained each time, so that's how much I replace. Remember, it has to be the Friction Modified fluid. Just in case, the part # is 12377916. I've personally NEVER heard of this fluid not working from ANYONE. It is the end all, cure all. There has even been someone on this forum who got an Acura dealer to change out his MTF with GM's, for free! Best stuff I've ever heard of, and I've never had the 3rd gear issue at all after changing out my MTF.

What I have heard is using the gm magic stuff which works.. is that it will void the warranty on the tranny itself... can anyone confirm that because I am looking to get an s2000 and dont need that headache

Its all about how you approach and represent yourself and your car at the dealer, or who you know ect. They have whole slew of reasons to void certain warranties. If your worried about that, save the Honda MTF that was drained out or refill with Honda MTF before you go into the dealer. Do it stealth style so they don't know you were just messin with the trans.

Yea, but it still amuses the hell out of me that people still sweat this. It's a problem you can fix yourself in about 20 minutes with the GM fluid and never have to worry about it again. People say oh I just dropped thirty sum thousand on this car and it should have no problems, blah, blah, blah. Fact is it does and will have this problem so fix it your damn self, enjoy the hell out of the car and have a nice life!
It bothers me that Honda has let this problem fester just like it did the AT on the previous generation. Yes, I changed my fluid about a year ago and the car drives like a dream to this day, but I really think they need to change some things (people) at Honda America. This is really embarassing! I'm also getting sick of the standard company line of 'we've never heard of that' for every issue (rattles, rotor warpage).
