Potential new owner questions
Hi
I been sporting around a 2011 civic, and my new job is allowing me for a nicer ride, so i am thinking about a 2007 tl type s. its blue in near mint condition paint, has the spoke rims, and trunk lip. test drove it the other day after 5pm, and it was kinda dark, but the car looked great on the lot. its also CPO so 1yr/12k warranty from acura, and it a 6spd, which i really wanted over my 5spd civic. it has 61k miles. maintenance has been religiously done at the dealer aswell.
anyway, they are asking a lot, 25500. i worked him down to 24, and he will cover my lease since i have a year left on it. 24k puts it 500 under the kbb dealer value.
main questions you can also help with, i keep reading about automatic trans failures, does the manual have that problem too? im going back tommorrow to look at it again and talk to the guy, is there anything I should check for? and hows the price sound?

Welcome to the Forum, that sounds like a sweet ride if the color is KBP. As far as the Transmission Failures that depends on how you ride the car. I own a high mileage used TL (06 135K) and I have had no issues with it at all.

KBP 6spd with relatively low miles. jump on it. you won't find them too often. get it inspected by an indy mechanic to check for frame damage, matching body panels, etc for peace of mind. carfax doesn't mean shit.
sounds like a unicorn to me...hop on it.

The MT cars might have a problem going into gear. Many members either get the GMSFM (General Motors Friction Modified Tranny Fluid) to address this issue or get it repaired under warranty.
When you test drove it, any issues with it going into gear?
All in all, no major issues IMHO.

i only drove it on local road, 1st/2nd/3rd and reverse
it feels like a quality short shifter compared to my civic now, but it didnt make any grinds and it chirped 2nd with a lil power shift. the thing that made me choose this over the 535xi i was lookin at was the 1yr/12k bumper to bumper warranty, and $3000 lol

so i went back to pickup the car, and they had sold it to someone else. i had a deposit left on it. he said he could find me another one, but i doubt he will as ive looked. would calling acura and starting a big deal over it help me in any way or should i jus take my deposit and shop elsewhere?

WOW, with a deposit, they sold it? That's BS!
Absolutely get your money back and tell them your taking your business elsewhere for pulling a stunt like that.
i too am on the hunt for a TL-S 6MT. Check CL daily, Ebay daily, sign up for AutoTrader.com alerts and check cars.com. Good ones come and go with a quickness.
As for the price on this particular one, you can do better.

Yikes...that is pretty sketchy. I agree with Dave...you can find a better deal.

Had 2 different dealers do that to my dad on a mustang convertible he was looking at few years ago.
I would get my money back, tell them you will never be back again and if someone ever asks you about that place you will tell them negative things and when they try to shake your hand - turn your back on them and walk away.
That car sounded like a good deal. Good luck with the search.

To be honest, it was a little more than I wanted to spend. I was more in the ballpark of 20k tops, which is just over trade in price for one of these in good shape. But it also had mint condition paint, an older male driver (who traded for a shawd 2013 tl), and little here and there things that I wouldve added anyway (led interior/foot/license plate lights, tints and better tires).
Reason I really got sucked in on it was the CPO title and the 1 year bumper to bumper and up to 100k warranty. My current job puts about 2.5k miles a month on the car.
He did cut me a deal though. Since I have a 2011 lease with over a year left, and just about maxing the 36k miles I have allocated, he said hes gonna take that and cover the costs on it. (roughly will hit 4k next year), and if he finds a 07-08 tls 6mt, he will give it the cpo and cover any maintenence it needs.
I told him he has until wednesday so well see. I really want to keep my payment under 400$ a month, and i am doing the 5 year finance. I was approved for 59k at 1.9% for new or 45k at 2.9% used. I think thats why hes trying to work with me now. Dont get me wrong though, monday comes around I AM shopping other deals aswell. Infiniti almost had me in a 08 g35x sedan at 385$ a month..until I test the tl-s.. lol

was wandering if that might help with the clutch issue I am having. When doing a high-RPM run, the clutch feels sticky and the pedal comes back up slowly. Had asked already if it may be the slave cylinder, thought I would ask if your suggestion might help.

The 07/08 Type S automatic trannies are pretty bullet proof, its the 6spd manuals that are a little quirky. Most if not all will have 3rd gear issues. The fix is either take to the dealer to have the fix applied, or a lot of times using GM synchromesh fluid will make it shift perfectly. Also, I personally feel that the clutches are a little weak in them. I have read stories of clutches randomly going bad in less than 30K miles. Yes I know there is a lot that can mess a clutch up depending on how its driven, but that's way early to have one fail. The clutch in my previous TL 07 Type S started slipping in the 60K range. Besides the fact that the 6mt TL's are a bitch to drive smooth, im back into a 08 Type S with the 5at.
So, if you go the 6mt route chances are somewhat good you will have some sort of clutch or 4rd gear issue at some point or another. As far as I know the 5at will be problem free.
Like others have said screw that dealership. The whole point of a deposit is so they don't sell it. They should give it all back and then some! Also, in your searches please consider private sales and maybe even consider flying and driving one home. I picked up a showroom new condition 08 Type S with 24K miles from the original owner a month ago for $22K. Had it been on a dealer lot they would likely be asking $27K or $28K!!! Its not a 6mt, but I didn't want a 6mt so it was a little easier for me to track one down.
Goodluck with your search!
