Post-Tinting Questions & Experience
Post-Tinting Questions & Experience
Questions:
1. Coverage -- Do most people with tinted TL's have the "line" in the rear quarter windows ?
explanation -- was anyone's tinter able to get the tint all up against the edge of the glass or do you have space between edge of glass and tint because they couldn't wedge it in there?
2. Re-tinting -- how difficult would it be, should I want a darker tint on the rear window, for them to do it?
3. Moleskin -- anyone apply moleskin after tinting was done? Or just before?
4. Sun-Gard brand tint -- experiences from people here? Better/worse/same experience than/as Lumar?
5. Cleaning tinted windows -- since this is my first tinted car, is it an ABSOLUTE NO-NO to use ammonia-based cleaners?
Experience:
1. For those who haven't had it done, it took a mobile guy about 2-2.5 hours at my office.
2. I got 38/28/38 (front side/rear side/rear window).
3. Looks good except a little bit lighter than I thought (especially rear window with parchment [light] interior). I guess this will be beneficial should I get pulled over.
4. Navigation and radar detector still work great. Take-up/Pick-up time on satellites is about the same (from 20 seconds - 5 minutes).
5. Car definitely gets more looks...

Use stoners invisible glass to clean the tints. You can usually get this at Pep Boys or Auto Zone. Personally with the grid on the back window, I would not allow them to remove the tint unless necessary. I have not applied moleskin and I do not have a problem with scratches. I've had the tint on for about 5 months. Since I had Llumar on my previous vehicle as well, I don't have anything to compare it too.
PS I would not clean the tints for a couple of weeks.

1. Coverage
I have the line and I hate it. I've got to take it back or something. In the parking garage where my TL sits during the day, I often see another TL (NBP) with an awesome tint job and no lines. If I ever find out the owner, I will try to get the name/number of the installer.

3. Moleskin
I did mine the next day.

1. I have minimal gap over the edge. I think it's good enuogh for me.
2. The tinting guy could easy remove your old stuff, then wipe out and clean your window, and make the new tint. But the rear window tint is harder than others.
3. You could apply felt before or after. But if you put it on while doing the tint, you don't need to remove your door panel or the top of it twice.
4. I use the SunGard, it's not as dark as Llumar. However, I don't know which one is better. Llumar is more famous and from the bigger company.
5. I use water to clean it weekly.

1. coverage. I too have the gap in the rear quarter panel. the tinter said he'd redo it for free, but believes it would be a bad idea since they would not be able to properly squegee (spelling?) the film and it would look like crap over time. he also said (and i don't have any way of knowing if this is true or not) that they have some sort of pattern for the film and that the "pattern" does not include that small space.
The tint installer was able to apply the tint below the rear quarter windows buy removing the rubber weatherstrip & having the tint film computer cut. Me & DLouly47 went to the same installer and have no visible lines. I use Stoners Invisible Glass Cleaner w/ a microfiber towel which works great. I bought the Stoners at my local Kragen autoparts.

i have a nbp tl and my tint was perfect... however.... TL does scratch your tint... and it did scratch my front driver side tint... however, it was so small and you need to look at it very closely then u can see it.... it is as big as a dot . <----- like that big...
i dont have moleskin install but the scratch problem varies from each tl.. by the way... my tint is 20%... pretty dark and it is impossible to see the scratch from outside... you can only see it from the inside with a close examining.
i just use auto armor-all glass cleaner and it works great on the tint window.. do not use any home use glass cleaner.... they always has some oily substance trying to give the glass an oily shine... however, with auto glass cleaner, it does not have those, which is good, so that those shine will not deflect/reflect light
