Performance

Does anybody have tricks to make this car go faster? I just traded my '03 CL 6spd for this car, and although is handles and feels 100 times better, it doesn't have the grunt and power delivery the CL had. I feel the car to be a bit lazy and unresponsive, especially when I lose to a 330, never happened in the CL not even close.

turn off the dang traction control, it really slows the car down.

IMHO.

Operator error?

I raced a 330i (I tend to drive fast a lot) to like 55-60 in my 5AT and beat it by like a car length, if you have the 6MT you should leave it in the dust....and that was with the OEM worst tires created. Turn VSA off, drop it at 2.5K. Actually don't try and start moving with VSA off, you will probably spin all the way to 2nd. Turn VSA off right when you engage. You must also realize that my car now has 7K miles, and it feels stronger now than it did under 5K

Too many variables and unknowns here....how do you know the 330 was bone stock? For all you know, he/she could have had $5K of work done last week at a speed shop and you wouldn't have had a chance in your TL or your old CL. Maybe you got a terrible start and he got the best, Jarno Trulli start of his life.

If you have the 6MT like me, I notice a slight difference when the VSA is turned off as opposed to leaving it on. Of course, this might be in my head too.

Unfortunately you can't hide horsepower, that 330 was bone stock, and it wasn't an off the line race, it was a highway run to the 3 digit relm, which I thought I would have the advantage but not the case, I could keep up but not pass at 3rd, 4th or 5th. Anyway the car only has 2k on it now and a little over 1k when we raced so maybe it will get faster. The car does definitely feel faster with that traction control turned off.

What brand of gas do you use?
Do what I did, try BP/Amoco Ultimate 93.

This was me, and I'll bet will be you once this gas makes into the fuel line:

You'll never use any other gas again. I know I sure won't !

I dragged against my friend's 325i in an empty parking lot and lost... but he kept going like 1-2 seconds early so its expected that I would lose. Anyway, a TL should beat both a 325 and 330 without much of a problem. VSA does slow the car on but turn it off only when you need to.

I love turning it off in empty parking lots...

also aren't the shift points like 6200? I feel like I lose a little if I get close to redline.

how you figure? the 330 performance numbers are pretty much the same as the TL.

Seriously though, I have read the TL is a faster car. Never tested it against a 330i though. I do want to have a fair match with my friend's 325i.

man, i still get a kick outta that picture.

I don't know the numbers but isn't a 330 vs a TL 6MT pretty much a drivers race?

In a straight line I think the TL has a slight advantage.

However, I have yet to let a 330 driver even think he was close.

I would think the TL 5AT would be faster as well. The 330i is small, and has a really good system delivering the hp to the wheels, but the engine is substantially weaker.

Anyway, about someone mentioning the shift point at 6200, I did noticed that today when I was catching a friend in L gear that when the needle got to about redline, a bit before it shifted, the car seemed to stop accelerating and almost start to coast. I popped it into drive for the AT to take over, but I was surprised because I felt the car losing power. First time too. Maybe just a fluke.

I believe I got 6200 from this article as when the power curve peaks. You can feel it as well, like the motor just stops pulling.

"Note the sudden drop in the curve after 6200 rpm. Do you wonder why an engine with such a smooth progressive curve has such an abrupt transition? We had heard early rumors that development versions of the TL's J32 were producing an easy 285 hp"

i would believe that, if you take a look at the dynos the torque and hp are still climbing as it hits the cutoff. i think with a little ecu tweaking and just simply removing the rev limiter the engine will spin to 7K and be closer to 285hp.

I don't have the graph that comes in the book from the delaership in front of me, but.....

Even though the horsepower drops off after 6200, if you shift then into 2nd it will bring you down to around 4K. If you wait until redline for the shift, even though the horsepower has started to decline, you still get more than you would at 4K. Plus, if you shift at redline, it puts you right around 4800 in 2nd.....can we say VTEC?!?
