Paint chip repair experience

A week after I got my 04 TL a rock catapluted off of an 18 wheeler's tire and skipped across my left front fender.... (I hate driving behind or next to 18 wheelers!!!!)

Well... I had 2 choices .. get it painted / blended or try to fix it myself.

I had 2 problems getting it painted by Acura... 1) they wanted between $400-$500 to fix it and 2) I was not too confident that they would guarentee that it would match to rest of car..

So that left me with option 2... try to fix it myself with touch up paint....

I first brushed in on careful and realized I had to figure out another approach after the bad results.

I bought Mother's Paint chip repair kit (Langka) and also didn't get the results that I was looking for....

So... I moved on to the my last resort and went down to Advanced/Discount auto parts and picked up Dupli-color Scratch fix 2 in 1. This required to use wet sanding and was a little hesitate in doing this since I have never done it but went for it anyway... I figured what the heck, the worst I can do is screw it up and get the fender repainted. I also picked up a exact Acura Nighthawk black paint also from Dupli-color. The paint had a pretty interesting applicator kinda like a ball-point pen to dispense the paint and worked really good.

Well, after spending about 3 days and about $50 total cost with failed Lankga experience and the Dupli-color.... Here's the results which I might add exceeded my expectations... not perfect but not bad. It is really hard to notice unless the light hits is just right.

also failed with Langka

As I've posted elsewhere, our 2,000 mile young NBP also got scratched (just up the hood from where the new clear bra ends!). I've tried Langka for over a week now, putting on multiple layers of thinned down touch-up paint (the stuff from the dealers, not the two-part paint pens from Canada). Even after 3-4 days dry time, the Langka turns the touch up paint into a flat, sticky mess. Problem may be the depth of these gouges?

So I'm going to wait a week or more and try sanding, rubbing compound, and see...

The Langka has not worked for me, either. I followed the instructions to a "T", and it removed all the t/u paint. I waited 3 days and did it. same result. I contacted Mother's for assistance and never heard squat - great customer service there. Another reason i do not use their products.

I did have one of the S2000 guys say that the trick is to use a very, very soft cloth - he commended a swath of real silk. Might give it a try, but I just am using honda t/u paint, a bit of wet sanding, then 3 levels of polishing compounds to get it flat and shiny again. I know THAT works.

thanks... the 02 TL that I had before this had 5% (limo) and it was way too dark especially at night.. this time for the 04 TL I went with 20% and I am happy with that.. I would suggest either 13% or 20%.

I had a similar problem on my bumper and I called a Guy named Benee Persaud @ 954-214-6578 for paint and chip repair. It cost me $125. but it came out perfect you can't tell the difference. It looks brand new and they did not have to paint the whole bumper. It took him less than an hour to fix. Next time give him a call. My .02 Cents worth.
