Outside temp display reads "---" for 3 days. Should I be concerned?

The owner's manual says that it takes a while to acclimate, and the sales department I bought my car from said that parking in a garage may affect is as well. My commute is usually around 20-40 minutes. This morning it was 55 minutes in heavy traffic (damn I-95).

Should I be concerned or should I keep an eye on it for a while? Anyone else have this concern?

My truck says "ICE" when it can't get a reading, but a commute of that length should certainly be long enough to thaw it out. (Assuming '---' is Acura's way of saying it can't get a reading)

I'd suspect there is a problem with the sensor, and 3 days is ceratinly long enough for it to "acclimate". I've never heard of this before as a justification for no reading. Temp sensors do tend to have a long time constant, but it should only take a few miniutes at most to go from your garage temp to the outside temp.

I'd say have it looked at the next time you are in because something doesn't sound right.

Others have reported a "flatline" temp reading. See here:

Surely you must have some swing with the Service Dept @ Acura (esp if you were the Ex-Svc. Mgr there!) so if they doubt your claim that this is abnormal, use some of your influence!

Your outside temperature display should display a temperature almost immediately upon starting the engine of a garage-kept car.

I see you've received my posting about this. What you really need to be concerned about is a dead battery.. like I experienced.

Consider removing the negative battery cable for about 5 seconds or maybe the two fuses that a responder mentioned.

Good luck to you and I should tell you, my flatlining problem has never returned.

The damn thing still doesn't work.

The salesman was the one i mentioned it to. I called the current service manager today, and he says they haven't seen any problems with these that he can remember. I wasn't sure it was a problem when I posted this, but I am now.

I really don't want to take the car in for this. I only have 350 miles on it. Of course, I of all people understand that stuff happens, and cars have problems, but I really just want to drive it for a few weeks.

I've trusted the technicians that work there with the last 4 cars I've owned, but this just bums me out.

Merry Freakin' Christmas, Bluenote!

Now now, wait until Dec 25th and you might have yet another pleasant surprise. =) Did you read about that poor guy with the flatlined ODOMETER? Now that's a bitch.

Yeah, I read it.

If that happens, the car will stay there until the odometer is replaced with a new one with the exact same mileage.

And you said that just to worry me, didn't you?

No, just to poke fun If we only had such cool service managers out here. Well, I shouldn't say that. I do have a few nice service managers in this area but they don't participate on the forums or anything.

So are you working at the Honda dealership as we speak? You browsing while your customers aren't hollerin' at ya?

HEY! GREAT NEWS!

Now I really have a good reason to take the car in for the repair. I just backed into a light pole when I got back from lunch.

Today just went from bad to worse.

I really wanted to own this car for longer than 1 week before i F****D it up.

Crap man,

I feel for you. I hope the damage isn't too bad and good luck with the repair.

UPDATE:

I pulled the #7 fuse today at lunch & the temperature reading works ok now. The fuse is labelled "backup." The car didn't have the same radio presets, so I locked it & unlocked it with my remote (Driver 1) and it displayed "Driver 1 detected" and everything was still stored including my radio presets & seat memory.

Both tripmeters A & B went back to zero, but the odometer still reads what it was, which was around 360 miles. I decided to try the fuse now, that way if I wiped out the odometer, it really wouldn't matter.

That's great to hear. Probably a good tip for anyone trying to figure out how to reset their temperature gauge.

Still gotta fix that bumper though, huh?
Sorry to hear about your accident.

Yup. Gonna leave it alone for right now. I work in the ghetto, I'm sure I'll get more beauty marks soon.
