I'm guessing it unseated then grenaded in the cylinder and destroyed the head at the same time. Still salvageable.. unless you asked the dealer to look at it which they would have replied an astronomical price to replace since they don't fix.

Give her Premium and stay up on maintenance and she shouldn't give you any issues. There at least 2 3G-TL's that I know of with more than 300k with no trans or engine issues.
Yup - couldn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. I ran 2 tanks of Regular through it when Hurricane Katrina sapped the gas supply from Georgia, otherwise 93 octane always. Oil changed (with syn) every 3500-4000 miles. Upon inspection the #5 and #2 plugs were lose. #5 was rattling around and toasted the coil. The threads were well worn on the plug, virtually smooth in the head. We thought we could just put in a new head but when the head came off the piston was all banged up and the cylinder walls are badly scored. Compared to a used motor (40K miles) the labor to pull and rebuild the motor is around $9K. That's at an independent. Engine swap with new clutch is 1/2 of that. Not happy, but hard to justify 9k with a resale value not much above that. Guess it goes to show there is always that "chance" that the worst-case scenario wins. :-/

In all of them I was in a TL, but the TL was RRP. My real-life one is NBP, although I originally wanted RRP (and my wife's RSX is RRP).

Now I'm almost afraid to drive the TL this afternoon when I go to a meeting with a client. But I don't really want to drive the RX-7 when I'm wearing a suit. Maybe I should ask someone for a lift!
My post above was from August 2011. I'm still here and still driving the TL. Just took it on a trip to Ohio two weeks ago. While there, the auto-dimming rearview crapped out and it had to be replaced when I got home. The extended warranty wouldn't cover that one (probably the first thing it didn't cover). I also just replaced the tires. The previous set lasted since December 2007, so I'd say I got my money's worth. Still love driving the car on longer trips like that. Next trip will be to Florida, one-way by car and one-way via the Auto Train.

The TL is currently parked outside because the driver's window on the RX-7 is stuck partway closed and I haven't gotten it fixed yet, so that car needs to be in the garage for now. I'm thinking I might like to get it fixed before Halloween—we have car covers for two of the cars but not for the TL, so if any cars have to be outside on Halloween when the high-school kids get a bit out of control, I think I'd rather it be the ones with car covers.
