ONLY getting 13 mpg .. Why?
ONLY getting 13 mpg .. Why?
I just got my TL about 2 weeks ago and filled the tank up twice .. I noticed my gas was going quick driving mostly in town, but only 13 mpg? What can be the problem?
These are the rims the car came with which i am trying to get rid of but i dont think its because of the rims

Anyone?
BTW its an 07 TL with 60,000 miles

the added weight of the rimz certainly doesnt help.
also, there ARE MANY fuel mileage threads.
read them
get to know them.
Also, in the MID it states your MPG and your AVERAGE MPH.
we need both to determine if your car is running properly.

And the MPG is 14 and the MPH is 11 ..
^your car is running right.
LOl, you must be driving ALL city with stop signs, stop lights, and must be stopping for chickens, stopping for cows, stopping for ducks and anything else that crosses you.

OP, I have the same results.
Only stop and go in city. But when you take it on the highway, a lot better result.
If you want a car with good city MPG (because you seem to do nearly 80% city driving) than you should consider a 4cylinder.
Or get the new BMW 328, they get about 24 city 36 highway

When I bought my TL I was getting 18-20MPG. I have been using SS to shift for 3 months now *Every time I drive I use it for the whole drive*.
I am consistently getting between 26MPG and 29MPG mixed. I am upshifting as soon as the computer lets me… and never downshift unless I want to go faster. Try it, it works..

Glad to see I'm not alone here. My 20 minute ride to school each day is all suburban roads (you know what that's like) and I'm only getting 18-19 mpg. I thought something was wrong! Glad to see not though!
im getting about 20 mpg's. if u boought it used, i would suspect that the previous owner put regular fuel instead of premium. but most ppl in this thread says its normal so i could be totally wrong.
I used to have 19's with a size bigger tire. I ran 245/40/19 which made the speedometer show slower, and in turn gave me less MPG on the computer. I was getting about 21 with those, now im getting 25 with stock 17's and conti DWS'. Same sort of driving.
At first it seemed like a case of a medical condition called "Lead Footness", but after reading ^that seems like you are jammin in the traffic jam....

Yeah man, nothing wrong with your car or you, seems like sitting in the traffic is killing your mpgs... by a scootie for your commute and ride the TL over the weekend.
But to answer your question, there are quite a few variables you should think about such as your average speed, how hard you accelerate, idle times, etc.

did you read the entire thread??? sorry for being harsh but...
13mpg is about average. I drive like an ass most of the time thanx to the awesome sound of the xlr8 exhaust system, so I'm expecting low mpg's. This tank now I'm averaging over 20mpg's and that's driving mostly highway and very little city. Won't exactly know until fill up time when I calculate the gallan to miles I drove. But normally I only see an avg of 13's fill up after fill up. "gotta pay to play!!!"

my "city driving" is through moving back roads with some stop lights and signs with very little idling. i avg 20 MPH but still get 18-19 MPG while driving calmly.
drive with a leadfoot as philly has suggested, then your MPGs WILL suffer.
it's not rocket science. your car gets ZERO MPG if you are just sitting in traffic idling away. if you are all concerned with your MPGs...get a prius or walk/bike.
I'm also part of the 13mpg club. Completely stock '08 Type S. However that is normal mileage so no reason to be alarmed.
My driving environment:
3 miles away from work, about 5 stop signs and about 15 lights. I usually am able to cruise through about 7 or 8 lights as they are timed. Landscape has decent sized slopes and then declines. MPH in the MID is usually in the teens. Takes about 12 minutes one way =)
Freeway cruising = 30mpg
I'd be worried if you are getting something like 9mpg in the city =P

i consider "city" any driving done off the freeway or highway (i mean it's pretty self-explanatory..they're opposites).
So "city" can vary a lot, from residential suburbs to urban streets. You can easily get 20 mpg driving around the suburbs, or driving around Irvine where the "city" streets are 4 lanes across with 50 mph speed limits.

This isn't aimed at anyone in particular but how many times does it have to be said to look at your average mph? "City" covers a huge range of conditions. Once again, I'm at 13mpg, 13mph. Back when my average was 30mph, my mpg was 26 mpg. I'm lucky to average 13mph around here. I've had it as low as 9mph over two months with 11mpg. People have written the city about the timing of lights. It's rare that you make it through one single green light on a trip. Imagine accelerating to 45-50mph and back down to 0mph for at least a minute every 1/4 mile. My parent's 4 cylinder Camry only gets 15mpg in this city. Some of our company F-150 trucks get 6-7mpg. For some people, "city" could mean a 30mph+ average. That's why just saying the word means nothing. Posting average mph is eveything.
When I'm on a familiar route and know the timing of the lights, I accelerate to 40mph and coast even when the light ahead is green because I know I can't make it (since I've tried 100 times in the past). If I were accelerating like most people do (pedal to the floor and then stomp the brakes) it would be even worse.
The EPA has guidelines for city driving, check them out. They're much better than my real world conditions in this city, starting and stopping at least every 1/4 mile.
