OEM Type S Taillight - chrome vs black?
OEM Type S Taillight - chrome vs black?
Hey all. My 08 Type S was in a hit and run...I know, sucks! Anyhow, I got her fixed. In addition to little body work, the driver's side tailight was replaced. However, it appears to me more chrome/silver than the passenger's side (not replaced) – see pics. Both of them are OEM (the numbers matched).
My question is, I doubt it, but are there two different 'color' options for 07-08 Type S tails? Has anyone experienced this? How did you fix it? I don't want to have to cough up more $$$ for the pass-side but man it looks butt right now.
Thanks in advance for your response.

Would you have to know where I can get more info on this? Part number, etc. When I check OEM Acura parts online, there's only one part listed for my 08 type s. Thanks.
I wasn't aware that there are 2 different kinds of type s tails. Are you sure about that?
I would have just guessed one was depo/aftermarket and one was oem and that's why they look different.

Im pretty sure both were issued.
Just like the wheels.
there are two colored type-s wheels. one is darker than the other
Just like the wheels, Honda must have changed suppliers
Why are all the stock images on google of type-s' have the chrome ones then?
going through google's image search, both dark and chrome tail lights pop up in search of stock type-s'

so i just also had to replace one of my taillights due to a rear end bump and after intially telling the guys at the dealer what year make and model they gave me tails for a 04 (all red) tl. but when i went back and gave them the vin to my car i got the matching perfectly black tint oem tails.?? how could the dealer mess you up with a diff style?
I didn't order it; it was all done through the body shop. The shop even ordered another one, but it was the same (chrome).
That's what prompted me to call the dealer directly and I was told there's only one.
Just curious, how long ago did you replace yours? Perhaps it's true that Acura switched to a diff manuf.

the reason i know shops do that swap is when my bro had a 99 gsr someone had backed into his car and cut his Front bumper, we went through ins and took it to their shop. they replaced the bumper and it came back without the OEM "integra" wording on the driver side front side!. countless to say i FLIPPED OUT! bc he didnt even notice it but they are supposed to use OEM parts and not aftermarket parts which is what they used in this case! aftermarket bumpers are like 100$ OEM integra bumpers are like 250 to 300$ i believe with a shop discount so you see how they pocket the diff
I noticed there was 2 kinds too! Glad to know my eyes weren't playing tricks on me. I figured it was caused by UV fade. But if there were really 2 different shades with the same part numbers how is anyone supposed to predict what they are going to get?
Stupid thing is there are PLENTY of scenarios where there are part numbers for parts that look very similar yet are incompatible because they are made for a different year. So for the same generation of car there are like 5 different part numbers for the same part! Acura makes no sense with these things.

Honda changes or updates their parts but always forgets to change part #'s.
you dont know how many times ive bought a specific part for my 2006 TL, only to find out that it wont fit.
I suspect they did the same with the wheels and tails.
a simple change in supplier in paint will cost them less but puts out inconsistent products across the 5 years.
One of my buddies works at the body shop and I do trust him to tell me whether it's an OEM or aftermarket. He was the one who ordered another one. I'm sure any other shop I'd have to scream or go through my insurance. Anyhow, we compared the part numbers and both matched.
so i repaired my car around the second week of august 2014, i personally bought the tailight from the dealer! shops are known to charge you prices for OEM parts and then go and order aftermarket aka DEPOT tailights! i trust my body guy but since i work near a dealer and my friend has a connect at the dealer i got it myself cheaper then most. also ive seen the silver bazel tailight but i know they were aftermarket. if i was you id look directly at the tailight and see if it says depot or oem manufactured acura wording (i forget what it exactly says at the moment.)
i guarantee theres 2 variations of tl-s taillights. it has nothing to do with faded or not, its just sometime a couple years ago they started making them more chrome maybe from a diff manufacturer.
same with tl-s rims.
the newer tls taillights and rims are both "lighter" in color than the previous original ones. TBH I kinda like the original darker shade more

UPDATE: I got a call back from my insurance company. They're going to purchase the other one to match - good news!
paperboy42190 - I agree, like the 'darker' one much better. Looks like I'll have to live with the 'lighter' ones.
Those who mentioned of two different variations, I agree with you all because there are two diff part numbers (one ends in A21 and the other ends in A22). But it has yet to be confirmed which is which. Thanks everyone for your input!

lol so i just got vary paranoid and taught maybe i had 2 diff tails and didnt realize and i went to check it out myself in my job parking lot. Luckily for me it does match correctly and by ironic chance a cust of mines (iwork at a bank) also has a 07 CBP type s in my lot and we talked about this. he also has the dark gray tails. never been changed since he bought the car from the dealer off a trade in 2010
Yep exactly. Every piece that was "Type-S chrome" should be the darker version to match into a real Type-S "theme". Chrome is not exactly sporty but that dark chrome is.
when i had my 07 kbp type s it had the chrome looking oe tails.. my 08 cbp has the dark looking tails. i was in a light accident where the pass tail light needed to be replaced on my 08. brand new oem matched perfectly
