Octane Help

1. Brain fart? Thought my TL wanted 89 octane. Turns out she wants 91.

2. I know using 89 does not hurt her, but does limit some peak performance, correct?

3. What is the best way to switch to 91 octane? Drive almost to empty, or just start putting in 91 now?

Thanks all.

Start putting it in now.. Don't worry, 89 won't hurt her. Let us know if you notice a performance difference (or if it's just a lighter wallet).

You will note both a performance and gas mileage difference...I agree with putting in now

That explains the milage in the low 20's I have been having. How did I miss this? I think the salesman told me higher "89" octane gas, and I just did not even look in the manual. UUGH!

Well I've had 91 in my car since day 1 and my mileage is always in the low 20s. I doubt you will see much of a mileage difference. It's more dependent on the type of driving you do.

89 won't hurt and the effects will be temp if noticeable at all until new fuel runs through. I would also go with 91 now.

USAToday did an article about it back in Jul 03 "Why use premium gas when regular will do? ; Loss of power often too slight to notice"

Just dump some octane booster in there. That stuff you can get at an auto parts store. Will that work?

great article.....there was a part there that said that one guy would use regular then put premiumn every fourth tank...was just wondering if anyone thought of putting a mix of 91 & 89 or 87 & 91 or 87 & 89? i know it sounds like a dumb question and would be too much work for some people.... ...i don't even really know what i'm saying right now :licka: ...i guess it all boils down to how much money you have...just think about it like this, the difference of putting in a full tank of regular vs premium is around 3-4 bucks. i don't think that's too much...esp for someone who can afford a 35k car or monthly payments of 4-600 a month ..my .02 cents.......
