Not so great experience with a Honda dealer. Help appreciated.

So I took my TL to a local Honda dealer for just a simple tire rotation. Mind you that the only Acura dealer in the whole State of Iowa is 45 mintues away and I figured there was no reason to take my car there for just that.

Shortly after I picked up my car and started driving, I noticed that my oil life monitor got set to 100%. I checked it before dropping my car off and it showed 40%, which is plenty of life left.

I went back to the dealer and asked them why they reset my oil life without putting new oil in it. I didn't have any service due message either. They just said that the tech did it by an accident.

I said I always go by the monitor because that is what the Acura manual says and that's what it's for! All they told me was that monitor is never accurate and I should go by their sticker(I had the previous oil change done there), which is every 3000 miles.

I wanted to talk to the manager but I felt like it wouldn't go anywhere so I just left. I really thought I deserved a simple free oil change on the spot. I really felt I got mistreated being told that there is nothing they can do about it.

Should I just get it changed when the monitor shows 60% because there was 40% left before they reset it? I wouldn't think that would be accurate. Or should I contact the corporate? Thanks all.

I don't really see the issue here, they made a mistake, no big deal. Get the oil changed when it reads 60% or when the 3000 miles are up. I wouldn't waste my time worrying about it, no harm done.

How many of you guys actually get new oil every 3k? My car go at least 6k if I follow the monitor.

A free oil change for simply resetting your MID? Is this a real, serious thread? Did I miss the punchline?

Now I know what the vets mean when they say the 3G section is shifting for the worse.

Well is it really simple math? I bet the computer calculates the oil differently when it's brand new vs. old.

Thanks for the most informative post so far. Maybe none of the Honda cars have MID? It's just pure stupidity from the dealer.

No need to get all worried and offended or feel "mistreated" by the dealer.

There's no oil life sensor or anything...

I usually change my oil at 40% anyways.

+1 it was an accident. Now, I don't know how you accidentally reset the MID, because you have to go through a specific sequence of steps to reset it. How or why would that happen by accident? I don't know. But in any case, there is no "damage" done to you, just change it at 80% and carry on. It is annoying, but in the grand scheme of things it is meaningless.

How they "accidentally" reset the MID is beyond me. During a simple tire rotation? You have to hold down the button for 10+ seconds and then are prompted to confirm the reset. Doesn't sound right.

By an accident, meaning the tech thought he had to reset the MID just because I got my tires rotated, even though it didn't show ANY service soon messages.

I guess he never worked on an Acura before.

Sack the hell up. For real. There was absolutely no damage to your car, PERIOD. It's not like they left the lug nuts loose or forgot to put the drain bolt back in, causing a real issue. Your sense of entitlement over an honest to God mistake is sickening.

A better way to educate the dealer on this would have been to simply call them and say "Hi. This is (customer name) and you rotated my tires today. I noticed that you happened to reset my MID and now I have to use best judgement on when to change my oil next. As you can imagine, this is hardly convenient and your tech really didn't need to do this. Just thought you should know - thanks!" Instead, you felt entitled to something free which is laughable.

On a side note, my Acura dealer replace my serpentine belt 3 weeks ago and part of their service was to check my air filter. Well they checked it. And left all 4 bolts holding the air filter assembly loose. Did I bitch and moan or expect something free? No. When I went back last Saturday for a transmission drain I simply told the S.A. and he talked with the tech. This is more effective than going through life expecting something for someone else's honest mistake.

Was this post informative enough for you?

Wow dude chill out. Did you have a bad enough day to just blow out on someone on the internet? Your attitude seems like the reason why this section is shifting for the worse.

I would just keep an eye on your oil and when it looks like it needs to get changed change it, or just follow the MID. Just remember, correct me if I'm wrong but I think it says you need a change when the MID says 15%. If that was the case get it done at 75% not 60% if your going to follow the MID.
