Is this a normal trait>?

Hey guys i recently pulled the gun and got myself a 06' NBP a couple of weeks ago and ever since driving it, i always get puzzled by looking at our MID Range meter and how fast it goes down and how the fuel gauge decreases ever so slighty compared to the previous car i have driven ( Nissan Altima), i was wondering if is normal with all TL's? or is just in my car...?

For example i just filled my tank for the first time a week ago when the fuel warning light came on and the MID Rnage meter read somewhere around like 345ish when filled from 20 left? then lastnight i just filled it and it went up to liek 429ish? but once i started driving it starts declining..fast..

Keep in mind that my TL wasnt bought at a Acura dealer but at an Infiniti dealer, but the only reason that i was so pulled in was how clean it looked lol. i bought it with 30k on the dot for miles and was a one owner clean car-fax.

Inputs on this is highly appreciated..cause everything else is hot in this car!

When you reset the MID, the MPG will fluctuate greatly, which will also affect the Range calculation. That's because the early conditions are all it knows. So, if you are in stop and go, the Range has to drop fast. If you get right on the highway for a while, the Range will be much greater.

If you wait until 100 miles or so, you'll notice that the MID won't move around so much. More than likely, there's nothing to worry about.

I suggest you do your own calculation to see what kind of mileage you're getting and compare it to the MID. The MID is usually 1-2 MPG higher than my manual calculation.

Again, it's probably fine. Just don't watch it so much at the beginning of a reset and you'll find the Range doesn't decline so quickly.

Congratz on your TL. I noticed that the MID Range is calculated by the ratio of average mpg to fuel level. As you drive the car, your average mpg changes depending upon the drive. If you have alot of stop/starts in traffic, you spend alot more fuel and have a lower average mpg. Or if you drive alot of highway miles, your average mpg goes up and your range is bolstered.

Thats exactly what does it too

If you do pure freeway driving at 70 mph with a light and even foot, you'll get 450+ miles out of your tank

Congratulations on your purchase! Like Dakar wrote, it takes a few miles before the MID can accurately calculate/predict your MPG. This assumes you'll be driving the car the same way for the rest of the tank of coarse so it will change as your driving style changes.

The MPG calculation will very drastically the first 10 miles because every light you stop at knocks your MPG a bunch early on in the tank. You multiply that error by 16-17 gallons and a 2 MPG change affect +/- 30 to 40 miles off your range in the beginning. I don't bother looking at my Range until I get down to 1/4 tank for these reasons. You'll also find that the actual range will be significantly more than the calculated range because there is a conservative fudge factor applied by Acura.

I think you'll find the MID is very accurate. The MID usually under-estimates actual MPG for me. For example, it might calculate 19MPG, but I might actually get 19.8 or a little more than 20 MPG. I have the Navigation hack that shows MPG as 19.x and it takes a 19.7 Navi calculation to cause the actual MID calculation to uptick from 18 to 19. Based on my experience, the Navi calculation is pretty close to actual, but mostly on the optimistic side. The MID calculation is more on the pessimistic side.

Perhaps the MID's calculation error is caused by how we fill up our tanks. I usually stop after the 2nd/3rd click consistently. I generally fill up at the same gas station so there aren't a lot of variables in my routine. I know my Wife is just the opposite- goes to lots of different places and stops after 1st click. Our Pilot's mileage always sucks when I fill up her tank because I'm squeezing more gas into it than she- perhaps another gallon.

If your Altima was an '02 or later model, you had a 20 gallon tank. The TL has a 17.1 gallon tank, therefore the perception of fuel use will be greater.

The ECU is also learning your driving style and that will change your fuel consumption as well.

Thanks for the input guys, i have tried to "granny" drive the TL on my inner city routes but the TL doesnt like that until i hit some long highway driving. I guess the next thing on the agenda is to get rid of those damn Water Spots on my hood =/ havent done any kind of washing or cleaner of the car since taking delivery of the car 3 weeks ago.

Does anyone know if using Meguiars Ultimate Detailer would have cause the issue of water spots on my hood? and using it too much is bad for our paint?
