Normal Emergency Braking??
I just wanted to know if the following is considered "normal".
I have had to hit the brakes in an emergency situation a few times in the 6000 miles I have had my TL. When this occurred, the following happened:
Thanks for your input in advance.
I have had to hit the brakes in an emergency situation a few times in the 6000 miles I have had my TL. When this occurred, the following happened:
1) The brake pedal goes much further to the floor than during a normal stop (about half way to the floor)
2) There is a sound (that sounds like) "the tires are skidding on gravel", however they are not
3) The stopping distances seem to be okay
I just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this, before I take it in to the dealer.2) There is a sound (that sounds like) "the tires are skidding on gravel", however they are not

"Normal emergency" ... that cracked me up .....
Anyways, you'll here the ABS kicking in, you'll also feel the pedal pulsing/grinding
Both are normal.
As far as the pedal sinking further than usual ... I've never stopped to think about it, but one would hope you're pushing harder during an emergency than in normal breaking, so yeah i would guess the pedal will sink further .....

As long as you don't hear brakes squeal or see smoke, you should be ok.

The brake pedal going further down than expected is the Emergency Brake Assist feature... I have invoked it once in an emergency. Essentialy how the feature works is it determines you are braking for an emergency by the rate at which you hit the pedal. The computer then automatically gives you the fullest braking possible, causing the pedal is pulled down. Manufacturers are doing this in cars now because most studies have shown that people will not slam the brake as hard as possible in the initial panic...so the computer does it for you. I was quite impressed when it did it for me the one time!
