That was hard to read and am I correct where that was 6 speed and summer tires with a 0-60 run of 5.9. Not sure how that stacks up against some of the other cars, but magazine racing/evaluations vary so much. The tires, suspensions etc. The TL was equipped with the best rubber they could get and it still did not come out on top where it had before...

yes the lexus is that fast. Interesting to note that both the g and the TL are losing ground.

Based on the numbers, the lexus should have won hands down. I wasn't too impressed when I drove the new 3 series. I'll have to drive the Lexus to confirm my accusation though.

0 - 60 in 5.1 seconds???!! That's around the same as the new Mustang GT!

did I read that correctly; in that the BMW broke down yet it still took number 1?

In the article it talks about how all the cars thermometers were reading over 105 degrees since the test was done in the desert. All the cars suffered from the temp, but the Lexus did not suffer for some reason........wierd considering its an Auto, has a traction control system you cant turn off, and its over 105 degrees out! I'm thinking TRD got a hold of this thing for the comparo.....

well you know how the west german judges are about products from their own country lol....

So you can be sure that reliability is of no concern at all when they do their comparison tests.

very much agree.. C&D has ALWAYS been BMW ass-kissers...even with the IS @ the end they say it aint no BMW but it is a dandy Lex.. :WTF: ?

good article...but again hate the fact that C&D as always favors the BMW.

Tl

At least one magazine has decided to jetison the FWD is the spawn of Satan attitude that was permeating the buff rags back when the 3G TL came out.

Back then, if it wasn't RWD, it was substandard. This time around, not a peep except for a passing comment about some torque steer.

The TL did well considering it was up against totally new iron.

Thanks for the pointer to the scans. That'll tide me over until I get my legal copy of C & D in the mail....

That article was the most positive one C & D has written about the TL. They minimized the torque steer and didn't b**ch much about RWD. AMAZING!

One of the .netter just found out that Bimmer's score is actually tallied with the IS350 at 74, but they decided to just add another point for the bimmer....

I think the G as well as the TL did well considering...............The G has consistently been in the #1-3 in Comparisons since it came out in 02 as an 03, not bad for a car in its 3rd model year. The TL did well considering its drivetrain etc....

Haha indeed the numbers add up to 212 for the BMW and 212 for the Lexus, guess C/D didn't think anyone would notice. What I notice is how much of a joke the BMW is compared to the new IS350.

I don't think so. Despite the magazine's bias, the 330i has more to offer.

Sure, they certainly tax your ass for what you want on your 3, but whatever. I don't see the IS350 offering MT (nor SMG-esque gearbox) or give the driver the option to take full control of the car. It's almost as if the IS wasn't meant to be a fun car, while having all the characteristics of one. I think the 3's engine is better engineered and more sophiscated, too.

My money says if you tooked the two on a road course, the 3 would be the winner by a rather big margin... provided that their brake module doesn't fail.

And no, I don't own a bimmer, and I'll still talk shit about 325i.

But they just said the BMW won, there was no clause stating "The BMW is only the winner WHEN it runs"

I maintain that they need to consider the big picture. A problematic car is no fun.

BTW WTF is "tooked"?

That is your definition of "fun", but not everyone's. Many people who don't think driving manual is fun, rather it is pain. Also, a engine being more "sophisticated"? Sophisticated is a vague word, what does it mean anyway? Does it mean it is so much smoother and quieter and yet producing higher horsepower and torque? Does it mean it is more reliable even under extreme loading? Definitely not for the former, and no one knows about the latter until long time of testing.

There is no doubt Car And Driver is very biased towards any BMW vehicles unless the ones they don't find good looking. They probably have already set number one two three before the comparison began. I have a feeling that no matter how good the other cars are, they won't dethrone 330i.

... I dont think I mentioned anything about IS350 being the better car..
I simply mentioned... the talied number between the 330 and IS350 is the same (even 212 and 212, thanks 03coupev6), and yet, the 330 still got the first place.

For whatever reason you're mentioning, with the luxury and performance of the IS350, I will take one any day over the 330. Did you not read that even with an automatic and traction control (vdim) turned on, the IS350 still pulled the fastest 0 - 60, 1/4 mile time and an impresive .85g?

Ever imagine one that come equiped with a manual and a disabled traction control?

Is it too vague for you? Let me see if I can clear it up for you.

The 3's inline 6 has lower power rating, sure, but the output/litre ratio is similar to the IS's 3.5 litre (85hp/litre vs 87.something hp/litre).

The 3's i-6 block is made of lightweight composite aluminum/magnesium... it uses an electronically controlled water pump... it has 3-stage intake manifold... double Vanos...

This is an engine that's been developed for years, specifically to be on top of the competition (like the car itself). Do I think it's the best thing ever? No, but I can say it's a better and more sophiscated engine than anything in its class.

I'm not bashing the IS here. I like the car a lot... I just don't think Lexus is catering to the real car enthusiasts like BMW is to a certain degree, and the car reflects that.

And it's so sad to see that some of you are so impressed by the IS's 1/4 mile time. Yes, it is hella fast, but does it really matter if you're driving a 14 sec car or a 13 sec car in real life? Are you that asshole that floors the car to pass everyone and merge at the last possible second?

The magazines have a bias towards the BMW, sure. But some of you are way too anti-BMW.

Again, I'm not a real BMW-fan. I think the new C350 will be better than both of these cars, anyway.

That would be awesome. Especially with Mugen, TRD, etc out there...

I can't see Lexus buyers demanding stick, though. Maybe that'll change with the IS350.

This is funny since the performance stats to many make it the king in the street. And yes many will tell you they want the 13 second car, even if they do not need it. faster = better

It is the same for trucks bigger = safer yeah ok...
