Exclamation New Window Advice

Okay on Friday night my car was broken into and robbed. I'm needing to get my windows done...question...has anyone used someone other than the dealer for a new window? Is the window quality bad or what? There is like a $350.00 price difference... I'm going to have it retinted at the dealer and so the other place says once it's tinted I'll never know...any advise please???

I would recommend the OEM window because you will have less issues. In my wife's TSX, the driver's side window shattered at the airport when we were on vacation 2 summers ago. We replaced it with a generic window for $150, but the motor has a hard time raising and lowering the glass. It turns out that the generic glass is heaver than the OEM and not as strong, which puts more pressure on the motor. I wanted to change it to OEM, but decided againts it since we are replacing that car soon.

My advice: Spend the extra and get the real thing (OEM)

I see you're in the Houston area too, what's the story behind the break-in? Where did it happen? Stole any valuables?

Good luck.

I would check with a national company like safetlight (sp). They will carry both OEM and another brand both with warranties. It should be much less than the dealer who is simply a broker in this transaction. Most dealers do not do body work they only handle the customer contact for a fee and have someone else do the work.

all the windows are the same from 04-08 so the model that i chose doesnt make a diff. probably made it cheaper.

My car was broken into back in April and they busted the passenger side front window. I tried to convince my insurance company to get me a Honda OEM Glass but being $490 for the window alone, they told me they wouldn't cover it since generic brands were available cheaper.

Dishearteningly, I went with a PPG generic brand and the guy who changed my window told me not to worry since PPG makes glasses for some of the top brands. I didn't buy it and it constantly bugged me to see that my new TL had all Honda OEM glasses and this PPG glass on the front.

UNTIL, I noticed that the OEM glass on my wife's RX350 is labled "Lexus - PPG". It hasn't bothered me since. So if you do get the generic brand (funny calling it generic now), be sure you're getting the PPG one. I paid $235 for it installed and after taxes (in Northern VA)

And as MR1 said, don't go to the dealership. Ask your dealer where they get their windows/glass replacements done. Pohanka Acura in VA was nice enough to tell me that going directly to this offsite glass replacement shop would save me a bunch, which is what I did.
