New shift knob

Just ordered new shift know for the TL and I need to know how to get the old one off without screwing up anything. It's my first DIY mod and I just dont want everything to go to hell, espesially not over a shift knob. Inputs anyone? If anyone's curious, this is the one I'm installing... http://www.cardomain.com/item/MOMSUBKCA

Turn the stock gear shift knob counterclockwise. I've got the same Momo Shadow too. Looks great!

do you have a 6MT? If so, you need to grip the silver part at the top of the shift boot and pull down (it clips to the bottom side of the OEM shift knob) then after that, you can just unscrew the OEM knob counter clockwise like jeffa1 said. You might be turning for a while as mine was on there pretty good, so dont be surprised, and dont be afraid to use some muscle....

Will that silver part that clips to the bottom side of the OEM shift knob then clip back onto the new shift knob?

Yes, I installed mine on an AT. It comes with 3 or 4 adapters to fit the shaft. Then you need to evenly screw in the 3 inset screws on the MOMO base onto the shaft with the supplied allen wrench. When I first bought it, I wasn't sure it would fit on an AT. But mine fits fine.

If you plan on installing a Momo shiftknob on an automatic, it's important that you buy the "gate finisher" ring which is tapered at the bottom, giving the shiftknob a more integrated look with the stem of the shift stick.

The shift knob you posted looks really nice. Is it a current style? I did'nt see it on Momo's website

That model is the Combat, and it's available in the silver finish you saw earlier, and also in carbon fibre (below). Note that if you do not order the "gate finisher" mentioned in my previous post, the bottom of the shiftknob looks decidedly stubbier and does not integrate as neatly with the stem as it would otherwise. So by all means, buy the 'gate finisher" to complete the transformation.

Cheers.

Last I checked, the shiftknob itself (without the "gate finisher") was going for around US$90.

I want to replace my shift knob too, but too scared to do it. When I take off the exisiting knob, what happens to that black leather thingy below the silver ring, isn't that connetected to the knob somehow? I turned the existing knob to see if i could turn it, and when I do, the black leather thingy turns with it. I don't want to tear it......

you pull the sliver ring/black leather down first before you turn. however, i don't think the silver ring clip is going to fit on the momo. you can install the knob but the black leather will just hang there unless they recently developed conversion kit just for 04+TL 6MT. i think it's very ugly.

plus momo don't have the screw on thingy. they use 3 pointed screws to secure the know to your exsiting shifter rod (it's sorta like clamp on). i don't know if it's improved since i had my last one. they always came loose after all the shiftings. i had to tighten them up once a while. pain in the butt.

It's really easy to remove the existing knob, you just have to use a little bit of force. If all else fails, go to the dealership and let them do it on the spot. The Razo comes with 3 adjusters for height and size to fit the existing shifter.
