The only thing maxima is good at is it has alot of Mods you can do. But Pooooor Handling, Pooooooor looks, Poooooooooor interior. I drove a 2002 Maxima and my 2002 tl-p and i agreed on the TL-P because TL knows how to control it self.

yeah... maximas suck balls ... you've gotta watch out for some of the new high-end Nissans (I know, oxymoron, right? ) if you're driving a bone stock TL... some of them push 255-270 hp (according to nissan) depending on the model... I'd say maximas you go for, altimas, watch out for any of the 3.5 models... except for the 350z, pretty much any other nissan's a joke and a half

Glad you threw in that last little part about the 350, because those certainly are no joke. I test drove one of those (before I bought my TL) and they're pretty fast and handle very well for an entry-level sports car.

My buddy just bought a four-banger Altima this past weekend, and it does OK, but yeah, the styling leaves a little to be desired, especially on the interior. Lots of plastic and a very Euro feel. Still a good value, though...just not something I'd pick. I'd probably go Accord if I was comparing other cars in that price range.

Wow, I just went off topic.

So yeah, put your car in shift mode (if you don't already have MT) and smoke that fool.

on.....the VQ35 is an excellent mill, it pulls hard even in the Maxima. I had a 5.5 gen Max (2002) then a 6th gen (2005) and the 05' pulled harder than my 06' TL stock to stock hands down. The TL is a much better handeling car by leaps and bounds but in a straight line you will have your hands full.

Do like in Back to the Future 3 in the end when Marty and Needles are going to race in their trucks. Marty put the truck in reverse assuming there are no cars behind you. That was a pretty funny scene!

the VQ35 is a great engine and the maxima does pull hard, the only problem is that VQ is in a whale of a frame. I had a 350z before my TL till a drunk driver T-boned me flipping it. That car handled better than any other car ive owned. I also had a lot of engine work done too so it took off. But after i got T-boned i had a maxima rental and it did have a lot of torque steer which absolutely sucked. The car definitely needs a suspension upgrade, but i think in a straight line you will have your hands full.

I feel the TL doesnt handle well at all but thats probably because im coming from my Z which was a little sports car to this sedan, but comparitively it probably does handle well.

THe VQ35 is a great engine and puts out a lot of power and a ton of low end torque. Don't ever take one for granted or you'll lose even if you are trying. Now can someone explain why the maxima has such a bad rap for poor handling? I drove my friends 03 6speed and it seemed to handle just fine.

I've driven a few different model maximas, but the 06 rental that i had for a little over month had extreme torque steer which i guess strengthened my opinion that it has poor handling or i guess you can say not the best handling. It just seemed to turn more like a boat than an agressive sedan.

B/C 6th gen maximas (like myself) are truely faster from a dig that stock 3G TL's. Everyone feels the need to find something to pick on. The suspension and handling isnt that bad, actually a tad more comfortable than the TL in ride quality, but maybe for spririted drving, the TL has a slight advantage handling wise.

i alternately drive my 02 tl-s and my dad's 05 maxima SL... from a roll they will have their hands full with us when we hit vtec because they dont seem to pull as hard top end... from a dig though.. unless youre 3rd gen 6 speed u will probably be taken off the line.. as for handling... i dont know about the SE suspension.. but the SL suspension is very boat-like.. it feels like the whole car sways on turns and i have to slow down quite a bit when hitting corners in comparison to my TL-S..... i love the torque though.. and the roar of the vq under hard acceleration... torque steer is too common when hitting the gas from a dead stop though... still though i enjoy the maxima a lot.. and i think they are great cars, and most of the listed issues are fixed with the 07 model i believe torque steer is minimized with the CVT transmission (correct me if im wrong) ... interior is improved.. and so are a few of the other issues... as for suspension i dont know if nissan has worked that out yet, but the maxima has a lot of nice touches our tl's dont... such as heated steering wheels, the enter and exit steering wheel and seat (they wheel moves up and seat moves back for you when you open the door and put the key in... not sure what its called) i believe the seat heaters head the back and the bottom of the seat... i think we should also be a little less critical of the maxi too because we are comparing a nissan to an acura its not like its an acura infiniti comparison.. but dont judge the maxi til you have had serious time driving one.. they are great cars in their own right.

Good advice in your second sentence.

As an owner of an 02 Maxima SE (same as the 03), I can attest that it handles fine for normal-to-spirited driving but, cannot be driven as well on the edge as other front drivers such as the Altima 3.5SE/SE-R and Acura TL (or even 3.2TL P & for that matter). Even my old 99 Accord sedan had much better handling characteristics (195-65-15 Michelin Energy tires and all) than my 02 Maxima SE.

That said, there are a number of people on Maxima.org that have massaged the handling on their 5.5Gs (i.e.: Sway bars, Strut Tower Bars, Springs, tires, etc,...) so that this is a non-issue. My handling has improved with the addition of strut tower bars and an upgraded wheel/tire package.

Take off that S/C and see what happens...

Don't everyone else forget, they had a S/C Maxima in Fast and the Furious!!! That means it has to be good.

But seriously folks, the Nissan V6 is a great engine. And I'd take a CVT over a standard automatic transmission any day of the week.

I was talking about the newer stock nissans since that's what I figured he was talking about and, except for the high-end models, they're slower than TLs... I didn't mention anything about superchargers or a moded car (since I don't think that's what this thread was talking about in the 1st place)... I'm guessing you can get to 60 in what? The high 4s, low 5s? That's real nice and I wish I could get my car to go that fast and all, but there's a reason I bought a TL- it's got way more style and comfort than most cars can even dream to offer, not to mention more quickness than most people expect and is safer than a volvo... if I'd wanted pure speed, I probably would've bought an RSX Type-S or something in that price range and thrown a few grand into it and raced my way into a brick wall or guard rail ...

In stock form, short of you having the new 07 TL-S, I'd say the "W" would go to the current gen Maxima.

Handling doesn't/shouldn't really come into play in mid size sedan FWD cars... since it'll be most likely a drag race. You want a good handling FWD, go test drive the new Civic SI... man those things are great in taking turns. I can't decide which FWD is more fun to drive, the new SI or the RSX-s.

As for the TL being safer than a Volvo... on what basis do you state such a claim? I thought Volvo's were built like tanks?

::NOT STARTING PROBLEMS JUST FACTS::

I had a SC 95 5speed.

with Stillen y-pipe
greedy SP1
Stillen high flow cat
Walbro 255 fuel pump
V2 blower on a V1 plate
Under body sways
H&R springs, KYB adjustables
ACT heavy duty clutch
Cattman polyurethane engine mounts
Stock injectors but new only had 5k on them
MEVI (Varible intake which was ported and polished, opened at 5100 RPMS)
Redline to 7100, with tune
With 120k on the engine and a brand spanking new trans, it put down 289 hp to the wheels and weight was about 3100 if not a tad less. The engine was getting tired. Hands down it was prob a very low 13sec car if not high 12's with DR's.

First of all, I am the moderator of this forum with the ability to see to it that those who act out of order are banned (particularly when it comes to name calling)....so save the "whatever" comment unless you want to be excluded from this forum

Secondly, I am also a Maxima (02 SE) owner with 2 other Nissans in the pen. If one poster decides to be loose and careless with his/her assessment of Maximas so be it....they will come across as a fool most times anyway. Most Acura owners here on Azine have mad respect for the Maxima and Nissans.

Just keep the conversation civil and do not be so quick to offend when someone posts their displeasure for Maximas. 9 times out of 10 (on this board), they are in the minority anyway.

Quick Reply: new maxima next to me, what to do?
