new 3g, sore back
new 3g, sore back
Hey guys,
Just picked up my 3g about a month ago and so far my only complaint(besides some rattles
) has been that I can't find a comfortable seat position on this thing. This, of course, isn't something that popped up in the test drive as it shows up after my long commute of 40 miles each way. I just got back from a 300 mile road trip and my lower back is pretty sore. I'm young, in good health and have driven everything from benzes to kias and never had something this obvious from a car seat.
So I wanted to see if anyone else experienced similar problems in their tl and if they went away? I'm under the CPO so I'm planning on taking it in to fix some rattles and take a look at the seat as well. Not sure what they'll do to it, but I figured I'd give it a shot.

Its the seats that are tailored for fat american asses, I think. My pain is in my left butt cheek and I first felt it when I had a 3G loaner while they replaced the tranny on my '00. Now, I have gotten somewhat used to it, but it is still there. Still not sure if its the car, my bed or a combination of both.

yeah manufactors not just honda have started to make wider seats for the us heavier americans, but i wish they would keep the narrower seats from elsewhere or at least give us a option, i am on the skinner side, so i slide around some when doing sprinted driving

(i remember seeing something years ago that honda had started to make there seats like 2" wider or something in like the early 2000's or something) (i have a 2g, so can't really comment on the 3g seats, but did wish they had put a telescopic steering wheel on the 2g; feels too far away, but legs are cramped)
my lower back hurts on long drives too when i use my left hand on the top of the steering wheel, so when i drive for over an hour i usualy sit back and drive with the bottom of the steering wheel.. heated seats really do help

.I'm used to firmer, no lumbar support, flat seats, so maybe the cushiony contour with excellent lumbar support seats don't work for me? But I'm glad to see I'm not alone.
ive had my TL for juss over a year now and i still find my self adjusting the seat settings, im glad im not alone. i found out that the seat has an effect on how I accelarate on the gas pedal. the closer i am to the wheel, the easier it is to accelerate and the farther i am from the steering wheel, the harder i have to press to accel.
So a little bit of progress since yesterday, lol. I had initially written off the lumbar support since whenever I'd have it on just slightly it would cause me discomfort. I figured using it more would make it worse.
But yesterday, in an effort to do something completely different, I pushed it really far out, so much so that my lower back/ass area isn't up against the back of the seat. I then reclined my seat more than I usually do.(I usually ride with it mostly upright). I then had to move the seat up a bit to reach the steering wheel(as an aside I wish the wheel telescoped more. I'm 6'3 but I really have to stretch to reach the wheel.)
This set up seems to work pretty well so far. My back was pretty sore yesterday from my long drive on saturday, but felt good with this new set up. I went to the gym, did some squats and my back felt pretty good on the way home. Just did my morning commute of about an hour and it feels better than usual. I've never had lumbar support before, so I'm hoping as I adjust to it, it will only get better and get to the point where my TL fits like a glove.

I have a lower back issue myself. I find that if a recline the seat some it takes pressure off the lower back. Found my sweet spot. Once you find that sweet spot, hit your memory button to save it.
^I can't quote for some reason...
anyways, the seats on the RL look like they could be very comfortable!
Seems like the older models, like the 2G TL /1G RL/etc. had the best seats. They feel so much softer and I bet they have more cushioning.

I have yet been able to find a comfortable adjustment where my ass is not in pain after driving...
But just gotta suck up and get use to it.
I also consider the seat entirely too firm and after a couple hour drive I feel as though I've spent the time in a covered wagon. The car drives fantastic and a pleasure to operate, but the seats certainly aren't up to my standard, that’s why I use the 2008 knock around car most of the time. I could drive the 2008 for hours and arrive refreshed, not in the TL. I've said it before; the seats in our modified RX7 Turbo are more comfortable than the units in the TL, and the WJ Grand Cherokee is far superior to the TL in driving comfort.
We're not alone as I found these during a quick search.

We had a '01 leather, great seats, too bad the rest of the Jeep disintegrates easily. My daughter's ’05 Hemi Grand, seats are terrible!
Crazy...I've had the car for two years now and I thought it was just me that had my back hurting after 30 minutes or more of driving. Ive played with multiple positions and it offers only a temporary relief, but no matter what the pain always comes back either in my butt cheek or my lower back.
First, let me apologize for bumping a thread just to agree. I've had my TL for a total of two weeks over the last 2 months of ownership (in the shop for warranty work). While the TL was in the shop, they gave me a 2005 CTS loaner, which I ragged out, but all in great comfort. I got the TL back a week ago, took a short (1.5 hour) trip and when I got back I had to go to the doctor for 3 prescriptions and a physical therapy appointment because of those damn seats. I'm going to try to find the sweet spot, but I'm more apt to swap some better seats in.
I should include that I dislocated a vertebrae in my upper lumbar about 10 years ago, but sitting down has never caused anything like this! Oh well, pain killers are entertaining.

Old Cadillacs/Lincolns seem to be pretty sweet too.
i dont think acura's are that bad. i spend 2-5 hours a day in my car. they've all been good to me. i'm 6'2 200lbs
You didn't say which year your 3G TL was.
I have two of them, an '04 manual and an '05 automatic (the wife's). On long trips, the seats in my '04 tend to be more comfortable than those in the '05. You do have to work at finding the best position, since there are so many setups you can come up with.

The seats look great but are very uncomfortable. Like sitting on hard wood after long trips. One of the most comfortable seats are in the Toyota trucks. Other than that, my Jeep had way more comfortable seats as well.
My 07 type-s was bought to travel with. I go to florida couple times a year. The first time I drove there (20 hrs. straight) the seats were a nightmare. My back was messed up from them and my legs were cramping up also. I played with the lumbar and the seat bottom until I found comfort. Now the seat is so comfortable that I cant drive straight through anymore. The car puts me to sleep lol

I loved them
yeah they can get pretty sweaty down there
