Need input regarding 2006 TL purchase

We are wanting to find a reliable car for our girls to share while they're away at college. Yesterday we test drove a 2006 LT with 219,000 miles on it. Asking price $6000. The timing belt is currently being replaced (and it's apparently the second time that's being done). The nav system and radio are not working. Would really like to have some input regarding durability of this model. Would you buy it?

Hi, since this is more of a model specific question and not a new member introduction, I'm going to pop it over to the right forum so you can hopefully get some better insight.

Welcome and good luck.

ps. I also changed your thread title since you're looking at a "TL" and not a "LT".

With that mileage and things not working, I wouldn't consider it. If budget is an issue then I would be looking at a newer lower mileage Honda Accord.

219k on an 06 is risky on the transmission (assuming auto). If the proper maintenance hasn't been done on it prior, then there is increased risk of transmission failure. I'd see about finding out if the transmission has ever been replaced or rebuilt. If it's a manual, then disregard, because those are bulletproof.

219k is passed the recommended interval of 105k for TB. I'd be worried if someone didn't keep up on critical maintenance items what other items would need replacing.

Price is high for a TL with that many miles as well.

The 3G TL's are great cars, but they do have issues and since it's a high mileage, 10 year old car, it WILL have issues. Mine certainly has.

I would honestly walk away and see about finding another TL with less mileage.

WAY too much money for that car. With that mileage, the radio AND navi not working.. no way.

KBB private party value puts it at about $3500. I wouldn't pay a penny higher than that. I'm sure you can find others in your area with less miles for much less $.

Teach them how to drive manual. Automatic + away at college sounds like a headache for you when the transmission goes.

For those miles!? NO. The TL is a great/reliable car but that doesn't mean you should over pay for it. Try to talk them down then absolutely.

Walk away and find a better, more reasonably priced example.

I certainly would find a car better suited for college transportation. A vehicle with less miles, less frills, and a vehicle
that doesn't recommend premium fuel.

id lean towards a 4 cylinder with lower miles for $6k, you can get a decent group of reliable cars in that range. honda civic, corolla, etc etc

Way too much, Nav and Radio not working plus 216k miles. I would be in the $2500-$3500 range.

Depending on how much you want to spend. I know just here is St Louis you can get a TL with 40K less miles for around the same price and in some instances even cheaper. Get something that you can get a warranty on. Piece of mind

Walk away. Too pricey and too many miles. Look for a 2007/2008 TL with that price..Has a bit more goodies and looks a lot better too.

TLs will run forever but this guy is asking way too much for those miles.

decent used cars are horribly high right now. Along with Housing. It is Obama and Fed politics. Plus greed.

I agree with previous recommendations. An 06-07 Accord coupe or sedan would be a better bet.

Private party sale for 06 TL w/219k is around $3500 for one in good condition... if you are paying $6000 for a TL it should be one with around 100k mileage in decent condition

Im with the rest of the guys... quite a lot of money for the milage. Just as a point of information, most of the nav systems dont work due to problems with the unit in the trunk. The cost of refurbishing it is around 350$. Good luck finding a reliable car! Find yourself a good used accord.

For that price you can get two cars. i would keep my eyes open at other cars. Try looking at the accords they are nice and very reliable and can be found at a much better price.
