Is it necessary...

Hi~
I live in Vancouver,Canada, it's very cold here recently.
Everyday, I am late for school!! So I never warm up my TL in the morning. Just wondering if that would be harmful to the engine? Usually I speed up gradually to try to warm it up while driving, Is it okay?
And why do we need to warm it up!!

warming up the car

They say that it is best to allow both the engine and tranny to warm up together.

by letting the engine ildle for an extended period of time till very warm can cause more wear depending on how you drive. You see if the engine is cold and the tranny is cold people tend to drive more slowly during the first few miles and avoid full throttle starts, etc till warm. This allows the tranny to warm up as well.

When idling the engine the tranny is not moving and it stays colder. So if you pull away and drive more agressively right away before the tranny has a chance to warm up, it can cause more wear.

(This is more old school though not sure what mechanics say today)

I have a garage and I wait maybe 15 seconds after it starts. When I am at work and it is like 10 degrees out, I might wait about a minute before I drive, but I am not stomping on the gas when I drive away. It does not take that long for todays cars to warm up. Some mechanics say it can take as long as 15 minutes to get the car to optimum operating temperature...

I have never heard anyone say well sorry son the drive train is toast.. You were one of those people who did not properly warm up the car!!

Well, we've had quite a bit of snow and cold weather here lately, and I've always warmed up my car UNLESS I'm truly in a super hurry. I usually let it idle to below 1100 RPM before going, 'cause I've definately noticed the 6MT shifts rather weird in cold weather without not much of a warmup. In cold weather below 20 F, when I start the car it typically starts at about 1400 RPM, and lowers to about 1100 RPM in about a minute or so. So I just chill(literally) and listen to my music/phone, and then drive away slowly. I've never raced the engine unless the temperature guage is in the middle area(normal driving range), and I can feel the clutch/shifter all moving smoothly just like a nice summer cruise.
