This yahoo posted in the Navi forum when this first happened .. he got flamed pretty bad .... (by me as well as a bunch of others with a modicum of common sense) I'm not sure which is worse that he was for real or he expected other lemmings to jump with him.

If you want a bit of humor check out the original thread.

My favorite quote from the other thread:

"How could you possibly have the money to buy this car? You couldn't possibly hold a job.
I guess you inherited it. "

I like the final poster in that thread. He was the only one to point out that Navi is only as accurate as the GPS signals it receives. So many people don't understand the limitations of any GPS system!

I like the one about the blind man who is finally going to buy a car now that navigation systems exist.

I think I remember two posts here a while ago, one about the NAVI instructing to turn down a one way street going the wrong way, and another one where it was telling the guy to go straight, go striaight, etc and then he ends up at the side of a body of water stopped with the navi telling him to continue into the lake.

I' pretty sure both posts were from here, but I could be wrong.

Well, I've seen some people who are concerned about driving in the rain, whether they have a CAI or not, so maybe this little feature isn't as well-known as one would've thought...

I love the Darwin awards...the ones from this year had to be some of the best!

Now, as for why these people's navi told them to drive the wrong way, into a lake, or into a guard rail, I think it's because they don't take proper care of their car. Like any woman, if she's not taken care of properly, she gets a little upset...I think it was the car's way of letting these folks know they were being neglectful in their duties...anybody ever see Christine?

A few weeks ago I intentionally went past my exit because I knew the traffic would be better. The Navi started telling me to make a left turn. I immediately thought of that old thread and started laughing.

BTW, you could see it was actually trying to have you turn at holes in the median. I was a little amazed that it would have that information even though it was illegal to do it.

One feature that would be nice to have...

Construction and detours are a fact of life.

One "problem", to me anyway, I've found with the NAVI that really gets annoying is if you go past an exit the damned voice keeps telling you to turn, do this, do that etc. to the point of being distracting and annoying - in short, it won't shut up.

I would be nice if they'd add a mute button and mute voice command so that a driver could temporarily shut off the voice assist because road condition prevent you from following the instructions and all the instructions in the world from the system won't help.

Great suggestion Kosh...a down and dirty way to TEMPORARILY suspend the navi and then resume your route again without having to cancel and pick up from previous destinations list or re-entry.

I think people must be looking at the screen instead of the road. Anyone who is doing that deserves what is coming.

Menu -> Detour

This will look for an alternate based on where you are at the current time .. great for construction, accidents, etc. If you're stuck in traffic you can hit the detour button and it'll look for a different way around it .. most importantly it get's her to shut the hell up!

There is a detour button?? When i know a backup ahead I have to manually go into the direction list and select the street(s) I want to avoid (like the highway). You're telling me all I have to do is press "detour"?

The experience I had on Thursday was a prime example of why you can't rely solely on the Navi. I wanted to go from downtown DC to FedEx Field in Maryland for a soccer game and I didn't want to take the highway due to traffic. It started out OK, sent me through the streets in some lousy neighborhoods in eastern DC. Then it had me turn onto a road that took me onto the Martin Luther King Highway in Maryland, and shortly thereafter it told me to turn right onto Sheriff Road. However, there was a big sign at the intersection--"No Stadium Access from Sheriff Road." So we went straight and the Navi recalculated. Now, Sheriff Road does go right past the stadium and on paper it looks more direct because it crosses the main stadium access road, but sure enough, when you get to the stadium the cops have it blocked so you can't turn.

This is a prime example of the Navi not being aware of particular restrictions on the use of a road at certain times (carpool lanes would be another). It all serves to reinforce the point made on the nag screen about having to use your own judgment.

Reminds me of what Chris Rock said once, I don't care where you are in America, Martin Luther King is not a street you want to be on!!

New Navi Functionality - "Carjack Avoidance Routing"

Invoke CAR to avoid all those areas you'd rather not be driving. Tie it in to new police bands for real time police action avoidance. Route around any routes that run with or cross MLK ...

It's got potential

Detour...

Brewmaster,

Thanks for the info.

While I have RTFM, I did miss that feature. Still, a mute voice command would be useful!
