My First Speeding Ticket

Flame me if u must, i most likely deserve it, i got my first speeding ticket at 17 years old, and im really mad, at myself. it all happened tonite, when i was driving home from dinner with my G/F and i was taking her home, i don't know if many of u who live in New Jersey where the columbia turnpike is, but its a long stretch of road that goes by an airport and its just straight away road, that goes down hill. so as im going, and just to mention, i have the passport 8500 blue LED, and i didn't even notice how fast i was going, and the next thing i know, the cop turns on his laser, tags me, and before i can even hit on the brake, the cop turns on his lights and pulls me over, i am so pissed at myself, i can't believe it happened. but the story gets better.

a week and a half ago, i got stopped by a cop because i didn't have my front license plate on, i kept it in the front seat on the floor just in case something like this happened, and i explained to the cop that the bracket was broken and i was getting a new one, and he pretty much bought it and i weasled my way out of that one. but my luck, i get pulled over by the same cop tonite, he walks over to my door, and luckily i had put the license plate on a few days earlier or else i would have gotten more shit, and he walks up to the window and hes like, i remember you, and he takes my information, and tells me i was going 76 in a 50, which is 26 miles over the speed limit. and he promptly writes me a ticket. and the ticket is 200 dollars + 4 points on my license, i can't believe everything. i totally fucked myself over, a word to the wise, don't speed...I PROMISE YOU, eventually u will get caught.

sorry just need to vent.

4 points? 26 over? In GA, under 18 and that means your license is gone. Are you sure that the $200 fine is all there is to this?

sucks.

cops usually let kids under 18 off with a warning for a little speeding, but 26 over is just asking - no, begging - for it. here in MI, the cop could even impound your car for that.

maybe you'll re-think that twin-turbo idea now, eh?

do spend some money on a decent lawyer so your insurance doesn't skyrocket. g'luck.

Teenagers got it hard these days.....wait a minute, I take that shit back. You're driving a brand-new TL. With navi! I had a Datsun B210 hatchback in high school for crying out loud. Had a top speed of 70. Man you got it good! Do yourself a favor and slow the car down. Everyone gets popped and tonight it just happened to be your turn.

Sorry to hear about your expierence. My brother who is only 16 got a speeding ticket for going 40 over the speed limit, in Illinois and I am sure other states that automatic suspension of license, towing of the car to an impound, and arrest. Cop lowered it by 1 mile so he can drive home.

The laws are getting harder for drivers under 18 nowadays.

Sucks to hear you got a ticket but there was no avoiding it if the cop is using Laser. Even radar if you were the only car around and he instant on you would have been screwed. I have the Escort 8500 X50 too but I still get paranoid that a cop could tag me. So far I have lucked out for 2yrs.

NJ is known for tough teen driving laws. I'll be surprised if they don't suspend your license.

word to the young...speed combined with inexperience behind the wheel can kill my young friend, last Wed. nite a graduating senior from the Vocational School that my stepson attends killed herself and critically injured her sisters, at 17 she never got a chance to enjoy life, I was sadened to see how many kids were affected by this loss that (I hate to say this) when a cop stops a young person on the road, he may be saving his or her life....sorry about this response, it may not be what you want to hear....

Sounds like you are truly trying to be a safe driver. Speeding is something everyone does occasionally, you just got caught. It's going to be an expensive lesson to learn, but life goes on and so will you. Good luck in the future. Drive safe, it's just not worth the penalty for the brief thrill of speeding. I remember getting 2 tickets in one day years ago when I first got my drivers license. I got points, lost my license, and got the message. They were the last speeding tickets I got so I guess I learned my lesson early on.

don't do the crime if you cannot do the time... yeah hire a lawyer and see what happens. If you were doing that speed you were doing that speed. They had you on radar probably have you clocked as well. Put the front plate on. Lesson learned is all. If you hire a lawyer the outcome will mostly likely be the same which means you got legal fees on top of it all.

My advice is to get a lawyer, and have the ticket reduced in court. The retainer is $500, but its a hell of a lot better than having 4 points on your liscence which will be automatically reported to your ins. company meaning sky high rates for the next 3 - 5 years.

Here in georgia any speeding offense 2 point or under is not reported so the insurance company never finds out.

This may or may not work in your case since your only 17.

I am curious as to why a lawyer would get a speeding ticket reduced... I know sometimes you can argue something based on solid evidence... I was pulled over once and the cop checked off posted speed, clocked, estimated, and radar.

I was able to get the ticket dismissed since there wasn't any posted speed and therefore rather than a 30 mph zone the law says it is a 40MPH zone.

I do not want to get off topic, but in many cases you tend to piss off the courts arguing that you should not have to pay a 200 fine and points.

I'm sure we all have sped a little here and there when we were his age. It was fun. The important thing is that he has learned a lesson (hopefully) from speeding and that he'll try to ease up on the lead foot a little. I have to constantly watch my speed or else I'd be getting a ticket, too, since the car is so smooth.

I had the same thing happen to me back in 2002. I don't ususally speed, but this time I was going 63 in a 25 in my Mustang. I wasn't worried about the fine as much as I was worried about my insurance. I have low risk insurance meaning any excessive speeding ticket would automatically cause me to be dropped. Because I didn't want to loose my very cheap rate and ending up having to pay over $600 more in 6 month premiums for the next 5 years or so. I decided to get a lawyer. I paid him $500 and he got the ticket reduced to 14 over with no problem. I did not even have to do any talking. All I had to do was to take a defensive driving class.

Becuase the 14 over is only 2 points, it was never reported to the deparment of motor vehicle safety and my insurance company didn't find out, meaning my rates never went up nor was I cancelled. Its been 3 years since then, so my record is clean again.

My 6 month insurance premium for two cars was $650, had I not had the ticket reduced, I would have been forced to go with another insurance carrier and they would have charged me at least $1280 for 6-months coverage for the next 5 or 6 years!

$500 well spent in my opinion, because otherwise I would have paid over $6000 more in insurance costs over the next 5 years.

But like I said before I was 25 at the time and not a teenager. In addition it was my first and only ticket. I am not sure if this guy being only 17 will have the same luck.

OP that suxs I am 17 also but I am still clean in terms of driving, almost been driving for a year. I know people who drive much slower than me who havae gotten tickets, so it happens to everyone. My brother got caught going 92 in a 65 after 6 months then like 6 months later totaled his car (the car I drive now ) and then 3 months after that got in another major wreck and never lost his license although my parents kinda took it away for a while. I guess I am kinda lucky living in NC and my parents are not gonna flip out as much if I get in shit after all the stuff my brother has done. But my brother learned his lesson, now drives and 05 G35 coupe and has almost been clean for 3 years. OP if you need to lower your insurance we could do an even trade, My 97 Accord LX for ur TL!

correction: that should be 63 in a 35, not 25. 63 in a 25 would have landed me in jail with an automatic license suspension!

Do yourself a favor, get a lawyer. I am a lawyer in the Cincinnati, OH area. It is pretty common for prosecutors to reduce the miles per hour over to 4 over. In Ohio that will result in no points and your insurance co. won't find out. I just got pulled over on Sunday. The state trooper said I was doing 89 in a 65. If the prosecutor won't reduce it to 4 over, we will be going to trial. There are many ways to challenge a speeding ticket. If the attorney only needs to attend court once a fair fee would be in the $350.00 range, although I don't know what lawyers in N.J. charge. Go plead not guilty, get a trial date, then get a lawyer.

Good luck!

I love Cali. If I am going less then 80, I get passed by cops and most likely pulled over for going too slow.

Havn't taken my radar detector out of my glove box since I have been in LA. Well except for those trips to Vegas. And yes you can hit 130 on the 15 (until you hit traffic)

you can attribute this to inexperience. don't speed if you're the only one on the road, you're an easy target.

plea not guilty and get a lawyer, i know in ny first offense they normally will drop it to a smaller penalty

I have to laugh at how the court system is just another business for the people involved... Having a lawyer is like paying off the system.. lol. The lawyer talks to someone and gets it reduced guilty or not... Its like belonging to a club. easy cake for the snake lol

Stop allowing people to make money off your ass ... Way to many lawyers not doing crap and making money off it...

shakespeare said... ''The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers.''

Hmm I guess when you are guilty as all hell you need someone who can manipulate the system for you... I know someone who hired one and the cost of getting off was about equal to the cost of the lawyer. But his record was clean LOL. pay me now or pay me later...

I don't know where are all these people from, but don't let them scare you
like you are going to jail or something... lol i got 1 ticket doing 112mph on the I95 here in florida and the limit is 65mph, i was racing a bmw and on a wide can't see nothing comming up on your right side there they were the bimmer goes and he comes and get me because i was behind i guess... but that was with my 2000 audi a4... now with the TL i would have been ahead and that idiot that paid too much for his car would have gotten the ticket in the bmw.
paid a 275$ ticket went to school for 4 hours = no points then 6 months later on the same streach i'm comming from a club retarded at 2 in the morning no one out, i was doing 128mph just on the right ane to get off my exit this young cop just came, got my info, came back laughing gave me a ticket and left. I guess that was like I know you are drunk just take the ticket sober up and go lol. better than a DUI same thing got the lawyer he got the ticket reduced and did the 8 hour school to = no points
then last week after 3 yrs of no getting caught lol I get the stupidest ticket ever!
These old people are in the lane in front of me braking hard to make a left, I look to my right , downshift to 2nd and haul ass till like 50mph, and this was a 25 zone. I stop at the light and I look up to my mirror I see the front of the cruiser... so then I'm like you gotta be fucking kidding me... I knew he was comming for me so when the light openned the two cars behind me , moved outta the cops car way and i moved with them lol weaseling my way to this mc donalds lol no luck , he came did his thing, said he was hidden in the cut... I got a careless driving ticket... i don't think careless is that bad lol hopefully i do the same procedures and I'll be good... in the mean time GOOD LUCK YO with your outcome of your court.

Ditto to what ill TL is saying... but with one more thing to consider.

I'm a founding member of the crazy driver club. I drove fast and aggressively from 18 to 35. I was even arrested for doing 125/55 but I have even done 165 a few times.

Based on the tickets I have had, which have been mostly 25 and over, my insurance has been high for the last fifteen years.

It's really up to you. If you don't mind spending $300-500 more a year on insurance then do what you want to do. Just be aware that if you rack up tickets your insurance can get jacked up for YEARS. I enjoyed driving crazy, but my insurance is currently 30% higher because of my record.

Worst kind of speeding, IMO, is to go fast for a long period of time. You cover a lot of miles and are bound to come across a cop. Most of my 85mph or faster tickets are from me keeping that pace on the highway.

These days, I put the cruise on. I try not to do 20 over, and will rarely do 25 over. If you are doing like 18 over in a 55, you are prolly okay. But 25 over would be 80mph and you probably will get pulled over. 30 over is an automatic reckless in some states.

I got a ticket waaaaaahhh!!!!

Of course you got a ticket, you were speeding! What are you pissed about? You did it! Every ticket I got (and subsequently got out of) was my fault, plain and simple. There was no reason for my to be mad, upset, or otherwise...if I hadn't been doing whatever I was doing, I wouldn't have gotten them. Chalk it up, kid...lawyer + driving school + (potentially) raised insurance = $$$$$$. But then again, if you (or mommy/daddy) can afford a TL, then you (they) can afford the ticket. Either way, lesson learned...watch for cops, learn where they regularly sit, keep an eye out for places they could potentially sit...if you're not constantly scanning for cops, they will tag you, radar detector and all.

Hey does anyone else realize that he hasn't replied back to this thread since he first posted?
Anyways, sorry to hear about it but you were lucky, 20mph over in PA is automatic suspension and in GA your ass would've been in jail.

my computer is broke so im posting from my friends laptop which is annoying to use.

but i know that im guilty, it was my fault, but theres RECKLESS DRIVING and then theres SPEEDING...some of you in this thread are refering to reckless speeding where you dodge inbetween cars at 80 mph. i don't consider myself a reckless driver.
i was coming down a hill and the TL rides so smoothly u can't really feel how fast you are going, and as im coming down the columbia turnpike picking up speed, it was dark and there were few cars on the road, and im gazing at my passport 8500 x50, and i just hear the loud beep and see the lights flash. i am by no means trying to justify that i am right in anyway, i know that i am guilty, it was completely my fault, i know that, and im paying for it with points and a hefty ticket at the age of 17 which will screw me over with insurance in the long run.

and as a side issue, theres nothing wrong with someone my age having a nice car, if my parents have the money to buy nice things, i don't see why you shouldn't buy nice things. its all a matter of your morals and values and what is more important. ill admit, me being an only child, i get spoiled, so my mom bought me a nice car, and im happy with it, if she would have bought me a saturn i would have been just as happy, its wheels. but she offered to buy the TL for me, and im DEFINATLY not gonna say no :-p

thanks for all your replies guys

i was caught doing 82 in a 60kph zone in october, just got my licence(g2) a exactly a month before. My dad picked me up from school and asked me to drive home cause he was tired from work. its a $108 ticket plus 3 point if im convicted in court. the plan is to go to court and plead guilty, hopefully the judge will take off the points and maybe lower the fine. My sister was doing about 80 in a 50 zone, went to court, said she was sorry and wouldnt do it again, so the judge ripped the ticket! luckyyy

p.s. best part was this happened to me in our 93 mazda mpv that we ended up trading in for the TL!

Honestly, there's not much to worry about. If it's your first time; of course it was little bit scary but don't put yourself on a guilt trip or anything! Actually, this is very mild compared to 90% of the teens 15-18 that I know. They're mostly stupid, of course - repeat offenses like my best friend who got caught 39 in a 25, alas during SCHOOL zone (15 mph), so that was 4 points (cop let him off easy, first offense), then another speeding ticket in another town (48 in a 25), and that doubled to 8 points off, and 8+4 is the magical 12 points! So he thought he was done, but hired a lawyer, of course the lawyer got it down to 4 points off for the second offense, but driving school. The worst part of most of this is the Graduated Driver's License program (here in Wisconsin, perhaps in other states, I really don't know)...it's getting more and more strict per year!

No lawyer!

For once I have to disagree with almost everything posted in this thread. I am also from NJ and have a good amount of experience in traffic court. I guess it is just a lot different across all the states.

I am gonna try to keep this short...but here is the best way for you to minimize the chance for ANY points on your license. Don't get a lawyer!!! This would be a big waste of money for this lower end violation. Here is a what you do. Arrive at the court at least a half an hour before the start of court. (make sure that you have called the number on the ticket and find out when your actual date is). Your goal at this point is to find the prosecutor. Depending on the size of the municipality, there will probably be a group of people and lawyers around him. He will be talking to everyone and most likely offering to "plea" or lower your charge.

I can almost GAURANtEE that you will at the very least be offered a deal that will get it down to 2 points. He will probably give you options, though. Apparently in NJ now, most of the townships realize that they will fine you ALOT more money and reduce the points, because they will rather have the money for the town instead of giving it to the insurance co. The prosecutor will tell you how to plea, do most of the talking to the judge, and inform you how to answer all of the judges questions.

Dress nice! At the very least where a button up collared shirt and slacks, suit and tie will work too. You CAN'T overdress at court. Be very polite too!

I think if they are willing to reduce the charges, you can expect to pay about about $215 per each 2 points plus about $30 court costs. So if they drop it down to a no point violation expect to be paying about $460! This seems expensive at the time, but will save you much more in insurance at the long run.

I promise that this will most likely be true in your town. May be a little different since you are young(but I doubt it!) . If you are nervous or dont believe me, then GO to that traffic court a couple weeks before your court date and you will witness EXACTLY what I have described. You will be amazed at how easy it is to get the points dropped for a bigger fine.

I know judges in NJ and can get you off, no problem.

Send me pics of your g/f and if she's hot, we can cut a deal.
