My DIY For Brighter Pure White LED License Plate Lights

Finally got around to upgrading my license plate lights to Super Flux LED's. This DIY uses all of the OEM parts, so no modification required other then drilling two holes into the license plate lenses. At the end, you'll have an almost plug 'n' play mod with a PURE white and bright license plate lights!

We all know how to remove the rear trunk trim piece.

Order 2 sets of 2 of the white Super Flux LED from Oznium.com

http://www.oznium.com/prewired-superflux

What you'll need:

2 holes drilled for the LED's. Believe its 3/8" drill bit.

Run the wires through the 2 holes, install the LED's, apply glue or silicoe from the inside so it stays nice and dry.

Installed, looks almost OEM.

And the final results, sorry for the shitty pics!

What is the difference between this and just some 194 super bright LEDs?
They are pretty damn bright.

no t10 LED is going to come close to mine and no, it doesnt require messing with the clear cover, it will look 100% oem from outside, and IMO the cleanest way to retrofit.

I dont see the need for all this effort in ultra bright license plate lights. As long as theyre white, im happy. Paperboys are so bright, hes never going to get a red light ticket ever. Shit blinds the camera.

superbrightleds suck compared to v-leds because

1. super bright leds charges PER bulb while VLEDs are usually sold in pairs and still costs significantly less and better light output & quality than superbrightleds

2. VLEDs offers bulbs in both 5k or 6k white. If you're super picky about white LEDs like me you will notice that not all "white" leds are white. Some actually have a hint of blue, some even have some purple even though they are claimed to be "hyper white, xenon white, cool white, arctic white, or pure white".

very few LEDs from superbrightleds are available in 5k white. Majority of them are 6k.

VLEDs >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> superbright leds anyday.

That being said this is what I have for my license plate lights. Brighter than all factory LED plate lights on most newer cars and most aftermarket LEDs. Not as bright as paperboys but i'm happy with them.

http://www.vleds.com/bulb/194-168-15...58-1-pair.html

They are rated at 105 lumens EACH if that means anything to anyone lol

@TegoTL
If you've tried a lot of different kinds and this is what makes you happy then awesome.

@vietxquangstah
They don't always charge by the bulb with LED.
Go on amazon or ebay and you will find 2x 4x 10x before the description meaning it comes with that many bulbs.
VLEDS definitely cost more.
I picked up 8 individual bulbs (2 packs of 4) for $4.38 shipped.

@paperboy
Why retrofit? Can't you just buy 194 bulbs? What are you retrofitting? Larger size bulbs?

I had the super illuminations ...or whatever they're called
Had flicker in one bulb(wasnt a tight connection for some reason)and returned to stock(nice and tight).
I'd love something that won't flicker and is reliable.
I may try this, or just do cold cathode...I really don't need the biggest, brightest, most blinding light though.

Pick up the ones I posted a link to above your post.
Less than 3 bucks for 4 of them. If you dont like them oh well they cost less than a burger now a days. You could take the other two and charge a girl friend 5 bucks to install them in her car.

Yeah maybe I will
I wanted to do CC, but I think it'll be too bright for my liking.
Thought of doing one tube instead of the 2 in the DIY

Just can't stand flicker.

you must have misunderstood my reply earlier. I was clearly talking about superbrightleds selling them as mostly singles. I did not mention anything about eBay or Amazon I know they are sold up to 10x bulbs per box on there.

The night pic of your plate lights looks bluish but maybe it's your camera.

besides by having a 360 style bulb in the TL license plate housing is wasting some light. Only one LED is actually shining downwards to illuminate the plates while the other 4 leds are just shooting light off to the sides inside the housing.

for better brightness you want a led that is only forward facing like the ones I linked. you have a ilx so I can't speak for you.

Got my super bright led's shipped to my house for $15 and they are plenty bright and completely white 194. Im sure there is a cheaper alternative out there but are we really going to complain about a $5-$7 difference?

The only thing about plug and play t10 LEDs that bothered me is that they are so called "super bright" and when a BMW pulls up next to you, their stock license plate lights outshine yours. And the aftermarket options for those cars are even brighter. So I thought to myself, I'm going to retrofit an led that can outshine all BMWs. And my results speak for themselves

I am another one that doesn't understand the whole insanely bright license plate lights. I basically think as long as you get the color and brightness of all the cars that come with them from the factory is perfect.

That's enough of a reason right there I've got some PIAA bright white lights on mine and they're extremely dim (go figure), but as I think about it now I kinda like it this way because it's white, but not so bright that it calls attention to the plate.

Opposite effect, I suppose- instead of blinding the camera, you can barely see the plate. But it's illuminated just enough that I don't get in trouble.

Great job with the lights, another new idea to give AZiners ideas and options.

I was one of the believers in the CCFL lights back in the day (search for thread.) That is until I had 4 failures. I realized that with all the times the trunk gets closed and all the vibrations with my subs, CCFL was just not a good idea. When I redid my interior lights with the LED panels I actually bought a set of 10 of them (much cheaper per unit.) I find these panels to be very reliable and brightness is absolutely crazy. Well with the old CCFL mod and the license plate light holders removed anyways there was plenty of space up there to put any kind of light I wanted. I put 2 of those panels up there and it is crazy bright and bulletproof reliable for the last 3yrs.

My $3 LEDs are brighter than my buddies BMW all day and night. Not sure about newer BMWs but LEDs are LEDs. If 5smd isnt bright enough buy 9smd. If that ain't bright enough buy 13smd.

All my setups are 5k. The pictures of the LED bulbs I used are for reference, not my actual pictures that I took of the bulbs. I use only 5k for my car.

Heres 5 LED 360 style. My first setup.

Here's 6 LED angled flank style. All 6 LEDs angle downwards. NOTE** In this reference picture the LEDs are not "ANGLED" downwards like the ones I used. They look very similar to this but are mounted at a slight angle so all 6 LEDs point downwards at the license plate. My 2nd setup.

Here's 4 LED Forward facing LEDs. Note that these are "HIGH POWERED" and labeled as "retina burners" because they are blindingly bright when looking directly into it. My 3rd and last setup. Do not see myself upgrading from this.

I would like to point out that the first 2 pictures were taken when I had a galaxy s1 or galaxy s2 so picture quality especially at night isn't great but it gives you an idea.

What's that supposed to mean? Are you saying all LEDs are equal? Because they aren't. There's 3528, 2525, 5630, 5050, Cree LEDs, and many more. Also the wattage consumption of the LED bulb has a lot to do with the brightness output (lumens).

The ones you have are 5 LED 360 style bulbs while mine are only 4 LED forward facing bulbs. Mine are listed as 2Watt LEDs. They are probably equivalent to maybe 20 or even more of the LEDs you have. Trust me I used to have the exact same 5 LED 360 style bulbs you had for my car for my interior light, mirror, doors, trunk, license plate. Everywhere. I know how bright they are capable of being and the 4 LED 2w High-Powered bulbs I have put them to shame.

I'm definitely not trying to turn this into a pissing contest but I just want to make it understood that all LEDs are not equal.

I understand having an insanely bright license plate light is NOT for everyone. OEM looks perfectly fine but some ppl(like me) just really enjoy very bright lights at night.

Good news for those of you guys who want to make them extremely bright....I have decided I had this mod to myself for awhile now so I will post up a DIY sometime soon when I have some free time, so just wait a little longer!

How long have u had this last setup? Any flicker at all?
That was the problem I had with my first set(super illuminations).
The regular OEM bulbs fit so nice and snug compared to the led bulbs. Which is why it flickered....bad connection

All 3 different license plate bulbs I had were purchased from vleds.com

I've had all of them for a combined total of approximately 2 years without a single problem. never burnt out or flicker.

Give it a shot you will be happy. For most of your LED needs VLEDS.com is the place to go.
