MT fluid advice
I was just about to put AMSOIL in my 6MT and saw this...
APPLICATIONS
Recommended for automotive and light-truck applications that require synchromesh transmission fluid. Applications include manual transmissions and transaxles such as New Venture NV T350, NV 1500, NV 2550, NV 3500, NV 3550, NV 5600, and Tremec T4, T5, T18, T56, T176, TKO500, TKO600, TR 3450 and TR 3550. Replaces MTF-94 fluid for Land Rover, MG, and Mini Cooper. Replaces Honda Genuine MTF fluid for manual transaxles and Texaco MTX fluid. Not for use in engines, hypoid rear axles, limited-slip or wet clutch applications.
^^^^^^^
This is the part im worried about, does the 6MT not have a LSD?
thanks guys
Steve

That was stupid of me to ask, I knew the answer, just was not thinking.
Honda uses Helical LSD units in their transmissions.
helical unit does not require special oil or additional maintenance
good to go- (I have used this fluid in ever honda in my shop and I just freaked myself out a bit before thinking about it)

GM synchromesh. No question.

I just replaced the Honda fluid with gm syncromesh. I'm not going to say syncromesh is the best stuff since sliced bread but it did seem to smooth out things. My first impression and the only way I know to describe it is.
It felt like going from hot oil to warm butter probably not the best anaology but that's all I have

I would go to GM stuff if there was a problem, otherwise I do not wan a friction modifier in the transmission. In the case of a clutch like LSD or automatic transmission, the amount of friction modifier is important.
Im trying Amsoil because its lack of FM

Can't imagine why anyone would even consider anything other than the GM synchromesh FM fluid....Tons of threads about how this "miracle" fluid has tamed the 6MT notchiness issues...

about 60K for me. I'm due for another "self-imposed" change although it still shifts like butter...

Not sure if GMSM (FM) fixes any problems here more than masks them.
The problem still exists, it's a problem with the Syncro's and that's why there was a TSB on it. Remove the GMSM, put OEM Honda MTF and the problem will still be there.
That being said, I've run Amsoil with zero issue's in other Honda gearboxes that had OEM Helical LSD's with no issues at all.

Gotcha. I swapped it in when I purchased the car at 65K. Just changed it out at 90K for kicks and giggles. It was kind of dirty, which was a little surprising. I'm guessing from mucking around with the other MTF which was likely never changed in that 65K. We'll see what it looks like next time.

I'm running Redline lightweight shockproof. It's somewhere in between the stock fluid (06) and the GMSMFM. I have the 3rd gear issue using the stock fluid, went away with the GM stuff and is slightly there with the Redline juice.
When I drained the stock fluid @ 7K miles it had lots of glitter in it. When I drained the GM stuff @ 27K there was very little glitter.
I'm on the fence which way to go after I pull the transmission again. I guess it'll depend on what I see in the fluid.

Have a question, my 6speed tl has 103k miles one owner before me. I'm not sure of he ever changed the trans fluid. Would it cause any problems if I replaced it with GM synchromesh now?

The MT has no wet clutches, so it's more or less a box of gears. I don't see any reason to avoid changing the fluid irrespective of miles. With an AT some people are worried the gunk in the fluid is allowing the clutches to have enough friction to work properly, and changing the fluid might mean the trans is going to start slipping, flaring, slamming...

I would have taken it back to the dealership. The root of the issue is the 3rd gear syncro and 3rd-4th gearset which should be replaced under the TSB. It's an apparent design flaw in these transmissions.
