MPG comparison thread.

I thought it would be cool to see what kind of gas mileage other TL drivers are getting compared to me. I have quite a lead foot and I've been working on it so thought I would see how others are doing.

Heres the rules, list all info from the trip computer screen:

AVG MPG:
AVG MPH:
Distance:
Time:
6MT/5AT:
3.5/3.2:

Also give a brief explanation if you were driving 50/50 highway/city or what. I think this could prove useful in trying to compare what others are getting that have the same car as you.

Probably be best for accuracy if this is done for as close to a full tank of gas as possible, but obviously we can tell by the distance travelled.

I have all my fillups recorded since I bought the car in November. But it doesn't have the AVG MPH just the actual miles and actual gallons. I have gotten anywhere from 17.12 mpg to 23.13 mpg.

Oh ok, well thats still good info. I just figured that as people fill up, they can notate in here what kind of stats they got.

I find that if I am trying to get good gas mileage i drive like a complete grandma, which is hard for me, but probably the best in regard to wear and tear on the car, and avoiding those piggies handing out speeding tickets.

I can post up a spreadsheet. For every fillup I have the date, miles travelled, gallons, odometer mileage, and price per gallon. Looks real purty on a graph.

this is meaningless unless you also include the grade of the terrain traveled. Hills vs flat are completely different ballgames.

mmm my bad on that one, fairly new to this forum. If necassary, just rename this thread and take out the official.

Anyways, please do post that graph you have, that would be awesome to see.

Also, it looks like you have the 3.2 model, but is your car manual or auto?

We can assume that you wont travel the same grade for an entire tank of gas right?

My commute to work is 22 miles and all uphill one way, all downhill the way home, so I would think that would even out over the course of a tank.

Averaging 28/29mpg for 7000 miles. It will go back and forth. Average MPH is 46. I drive all highway to get to work. 110 miles round trip. Mine is AT. There are a couple of stretches with steep hills, so I go downhill one way and coming home go uphill. Probably balances out.

predominantly, mixed city/hwy. avg 18-19 mpg. AND i have a gas guzzling roof rack on my car year round. usually fill up every 240-260 miles/tank...~12-13 gallons (when my gas light turns on). avg mph between 25-30mph.

with just mostly HWY trips, i get 23-24 mpg without bikes, about 21-22 mpg with two bikes.

these numbers have been pretty consistent since new in '05.

This is exactly what I'm getting with my 04 6MT. No roof rack, no bikes. I drive 20 miles one way to work, half/half city/hwy. 35-40 mph city with stoplights and 1 school zone, the other half is hwy at 70-80 mph. I did run 80 miles hwy at 70 and reset the computer and it said 25 mpg at the end of the trip. I've had it just under a month and LOVE it! I'd rather be out running errands today than doing stuff around the house! LOL

Hint. Never let your tank go below 1/2 if you can help it. In the colder months, if your car is parked outside, your tank will develop condensation inside. Also, it's good to have sufficient fuel reserves in case you run into a heavy traffic tie-up or an emergency.

I don't pay much attention to my MID as far as fuel usage goes. I do view it from time to time just for kicks or as a reference point for this website. Whenever I want to do a mileage check, I always calculate it manually and adhere to specific criteria. My best in-town one week work commute mileage was 27.98 MPG and my best highway mileage was 33.94 MPG with my '04 manual.

hypermiling TLs...nice. With gas prices these days I'm not against the idea of trying to save money where I can.

I work in an industry where there is a lot of driving. I'll fill up either tomorrow or monday morning and calculate off of gallons pumped. my MID says 28mpg but I want to know how much I'm really getting.

i'll keep that in mind. i usually try not to let it get to the light, but it does especially when i'm tight on time or the gas station i go to is out of the way depending which office i go to for work. i usually fill up just as the light turns on. and around here...you always want to have reserves particularly with all the contruction projects around here causing most of the traffic headaches around here. and when i anticipate snow...always fill up the tank.

i know not too run the tank down to say the last gallon, but even with the last 3-4 gallons left int he tank (ie just as light turns on), its bad?? can condensation develop when its really humid outside during the summer too?? and i'm assuming since you mention it, that it will affect the MPGs. yes??? no??? thanks for the info.

I drive a stock TL '08, 5AT

All through December and January when it was brutal winter in the upper Midwest, moving when the needle moves made my mpg 21.8 to 23.75

5W20 Mobile1 synthetic and balmier weather brings me to 26.25.
Midwest is fairly flat terrain.
I get 345 miles per tank now.

My MID shows an avg of 28 mph

Switching to synthetic gave me a 2+ mpg boost

I average around 21-22, about 2,000 miles a month. I get about 300 miles per tank, 12-13 gallons per fill.

Mornin' TLtrigirl, it's raining out here in western Prince William County. In which part of NOVA are you located/work? Closer in locations or out a ways? We used to live in Arlington (close to Seven Corners) and I know how it can get around those areas.

Condensation is apt to develop in your tank when there is a sizable drop in temperature over night. A good indicator is when you see condensation on the car the next morning. If you do and you tank is low, there's a good chance there is some moisture in your tank as well. Yes it will affect mileage, but more importantly, it can potentially damage fuel systems and other components in your car.

The other issue, that of traffic and an emergency, is as or more important in that you do not want to run out of fuel in a bad situation. Weather, major accidents, tragedies (remember the traffic on 9/11?), any of these types of events can be bed when you are running on empty.

i figured as much with water in any of the vulnerable car systems. even though i do park outside, i dont' get much morning dew (or its all on the car cover) as compared to my neighbors who park on the street. yeah i hear ya on the major accidents or issues in NOVA (ie the commute from hell in late january?-i was lucky and canceled my afternoon that day. watched the drama unfold in the safety of my home). thankfully i commute against traffic, don't have far to drive from home to work (12 miles at most) and i go to work and leave after the MAJOR part of the rush. mostly i do most of my commuting inside the beltway and tyson's (the neverending traffic headache). i've found some "scenic routes" to take to avoid all the major construction zones and at least be moving rather than "parked" inching along. i still wonder what brilliant urban planner thought it was a great idea to create seven corners in a major suburban commuter route??

hopefully you work near home. if you work in the city, i dont' admire your commute in.

Seven Corners was opened in 1956 and believe me, back in those times, there was no real rush hour traffic. I well remember getting off work around 3:30 in the afternoon and heading into DC for a beer with a friend or two in 1965. We'd go across Key bridge and hit either Georgetown or around 23rd and Pennsylvania, then leave around 5-5:30, getting back home in Falls Church (where I grew up) in about 20 minutes. No traffic problems back then.

"hopefully you work near home. if you work in the city, i dont' admire your commute in."

I don't work anymore. Our project (major government contractor) was winding down into a support and maintenance mode and since I was a software developer, me and a bunch of other developers and engineers were let go during the last four months of 2009. So I figured since I was getting closer to retiring, what the hey. And that's what I did.

I would not take a job in DC. They couldn't pay me enough. I have worked two contracts in DC, one in Northwest and one in Northeast, but that was in the mid-80's. Not my cup of tea.

The last job, the one I mentioned above with the cutbacks, was in Fair Lakes and the commute was a piece of cake. I took back roads and went through Manassas so it was easy and never a traffic nightmare. I was at that location for 7 1/2 years.

About 6 weeks ago, I drove in to see a few places where I lived over the years. Annandale was my wife's and my first home when we got married. Back then, it was a great place to live... lots of fun. We later lived in Arlington, just off of Wilson Blvd in Bluemont Manor. Our house there bordered the park. I grew up in Falls Church (actually within the city limits) and back in those days, I had a ball.

Enjoy!

Right now for the winter time with the colder weather I get the following avgs each week

mpg avg: 24mpg
distance: typically 370-380 miles

In the spring and fall with the right temperatures I get the following

mpg avg: 27mpg
distance: 400-410miles

All times of the year this is with mostly rural city/highway travel. I'd say in a 50/50 mix. I have the 5AT and 3.2L Base TL.

I'm pretty happy with these numbers. On long road trips using mostly highway/interstates/parkways I have gotten in the low to mid 30 mpg on the TL.

I was wondering WTF was up with gas prices on the far left being so jagged. Now I remember. I kept finding myself low on gas near the most expensive gas stations around, so I would just put in $20 and then fill up at a cheaper place later. Partial fillups are accounted for by recording the gallons added and the intermediate mileage so it doesn't skew the MPG chart.

In my case I have a 3.2/ Auto and mileage is usually 19MPG for a 26 average MPH. I fill up every time, use the same gas (Costco Premium), and keep the tires inflated. The problem with my commute is that it's too urban- too many lights and stops. Once I get on the open road the TL cruises and easily gets 30MPG driving at high rates of speed.

There is definitely a link to average MID MPH to MID calculated and actual MPG. The MID's calculated average MPH simply divides distance by time. I have found the calculated MID MPG to be extremely close to actual. Check out the first link below and you'll see why I would have this opinion.

Here's a few links that you posters may find helpful as well:

6 months of fill up data linking MID MPH with calculated and actual MPG: http://https://acurazine.com/forums/...costaracer+mph

A formula for predicting MPG simply by looking at how the MID is tracking your average MPH: https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...costaracer+mph

Also the EPA has a great site for tracking and sharing MPG for cars: www.fueleconomy.gov

I think with gas nearing $4 a gallon, many people will be interested in this topic

Yeah I definitely find some strange satisfaction in data/numbers. I input the numbers into an app on my phone each time I put gas in the car to keep track.

We need the average mph too. It's a lot more accurate than 60% highway and 40% city. I'll guarantee everyone's mph vs mpg is within 5% of one another.

I meant to post mine but I've been so busy listening to the new speakers I keep forgetting to look.
