Can the motor mounts be seen from above the motor, or do you need be under the car to see them?

And yes, I agree, take it to a local wrench unles the car is under warranty.

Thanks

Can you feel your steering wheel shake when you start your car in the mornings? Only the first time you start your car then then it goes away throughout the rest of the day until the next time you start your car in the monring...

The reason i ask is because I suspect I need a new motor mount also....I started a thread on this a few days ago and that's what the crowd thinks it may be also

I just had 2 of them changed recently and boy am I glad it was covered under warranty. Like others mentioned, you'd be better off going to get it done at a local mechanic, just make sure you go to someone that knows what he's doing.

When I was getting mine done the Acura Service Advisor mentioned that it's very common on FWD vehicles.

you have vac assisted motor mounts, at least the front and rear as you look at the engine- it blows and you have a mystery vac leak for engine miss

the front fails because we lack a support torque bar for the engine, then you dont notice and drive with it broken so the passenger side mount (actual front of engine) takes that extra load and it fails

if you swapped motors and expect acura to still warranty mounts--good luck'
Should have pre-bribed the service manager with donuts~

on gen 2 with its high trans failure rate at low miles, say 60-80kmiles, the acura tech spots the fluid loss from the motor mount, a trail of oil same as a blown shock does, or you see 3 small oil spots of a very strange fluid- like nothing that you have seen in the car before...thats motor mount.

While the trans is removed for replacement its reach up and remove the bolts with easy access and .3 billable time,, 15 minutes essentially
With trans in place its ~3 hours in the book,, and 1.4 DIY by ziners
The shop who said $40 has not done a TL mount and has no idea,,,yet

look straight down behind the radiator in middle section of car- that 4 inch diameter round thing with a rubber donut and bolt- metal mounting plate- thats front mount

not sure gen3, but my 01's was $120 for the part itself, you can do better thru one of our sponsor vendors for DIY

Is it wise to purchase these mounts used? I am getting a deal on a mount that has 11k miles on it.

how would you know which motor mount needs to be replace. i read in another post that even if they look good (not broken) they could be weak and not doing their job. cause i really don't want to replace all 4 motor mount. which are the most common motor mount to be replace?

most common failure is the front mount- behind radiator- it may look slightly compressed on its rubber section when dead, but oil leak from inside is clue number 1, not many motor mounts leak!!~
easiest to look at another TL and compare

the next to go is passenger side of car (very front of engine but called `side mount`
the rear and trans mounts are not often bad unless you let the others go and drove like a madman for a year with 2-3 broken mounts
the car is so smooth you may not notice- except the idle wont be as smooth- vac assist mount on front and rear

You can do the old school methods of have friend stand on brake and rev engine 2500 rpm in gear while you watch the passenger side mount for movement

front mount and others- stick a prybar in and wiggle- should not move,
and the visual for oil leak

Dude- as long as it looks good- rubber intact- no oil leaks- should be ok IF its a great price- otherwise use online dealer and get for under $100

will do! my uncle has a lift in his garage for his 69' trans-am firebird, so i'll be able to get right under it this weekend. i hope it is the front, it would be easier to get to.

Two of my motor mounts broke about 5 months ago from me being stupid not slowing down over speed bumps. But for the 105K service, new mounts, and timing belt they got me for around $1000!

i went to my father shop since all this talk about motor mount. i'm having the same symptoms in my car. Today they checked my motor mount and saw that the front engine motor was in pretty bad shake. place the order for the front and the side since i'm not sure how good it is. will get them install next saturday for $0 lol.
