Modify 6S MT Knob?

?It looks like (after searching) most of us with the 6SMT have extensive cosmetic wear on the top of the shift knob. The previous owner of mine must have had some long-ass nails as the finish is chipping off.

Question: Anyone have an idea how to resurface or clean up the appearance? I don't want a new or aftermarket knob.

i dont think anything short of replacing the knob will get you your results.

I haven't had a chance to look at a 6MT knob but if the top is plastic you could always paint it over, or if it's metal simply sand it down and spray some clearcoat on it to keep it from oxidizing.

$40?!? Is it OME? Stearlership quoted me $91.00+tax (and shipping which they don't tell you about).

I've thought about sanding and painting but I don't know color, brand, or texture I should go with.

Idunno, I'm very fond of the OEM TL knob.

I saw an S2K knob for the first time, and it's sexy as fawk.

I'd rock one in my TL.

I had a little incident last winter, where I braked semi-abruptly, and my skis went flying forward from the rear seat pass-thru. One of them chipped up the metallic finish on my shift knob pretty good, inspiring me to get a weighted aftermarket knob.
I got this one from some random ebay vendor for $20. Weighs about 1lb (very heavy), and I think it looks pretty cool. It's not quite so shiny in real life, the picture has a lot of glare.

Those get hot as hell in the summer and I don't like the way the look with the stock shift boot ring. I like the Maven's better and would go with that if I went aftermarket. Thanks, though.

On the one car, my wife did a number on it with her rings. I thought about Di-Noc the top but was thinking not sure how that would go. Can the stock knob be countersunk because that I have that on another car (Not a TL)and that would be very nice on the TL also. The knob seems just a bit high. Trying to do the top fix and countersink on the cheap.

What really frustrates me is that over on the CL forum, someone got the OEM knob for under $7. Link

Dude...that was supposed to be our little secret.

Once I get Friesen's in the mail, I'm going to pull my chipped knob off and start playing with it (that too, sounds bad). I'll try some different paints. Also, will ask my father-in-law as he's a machinist and always has some cool ideas/tools to use at his shop.

Okay, so I have my like-new condition knob. Any ideas on how to protect it? I was thinking of some kind of clear, low gloss acrylic. Thoughts?
