Mobil 1 (rumored to be part syn) vs. Pennzoil Platinum (new)

So I've heard a lot of good things about this new Pennzoil Plat and I've been considering switching over. Apparently according to rumors (?), Mobil 1's been selling a different product in their same old bottle of "fully synthetic" motor oil. I've heard from a few people now that Mobil 1's so called synthetic oil isn't actually fully synthetic; it's part! Pennzoil Plat > Mobil 1? THANKS!

There are two grades of the M1 - I think you have to look for the bottle that says "fully synthetic"

As for penz I got no say.

My friend drives an MB C class to work from Long Island NY to Pennsylvania everyday. His rountrip drive is about 240 mi. He uses Mobil 1 and religiously changes oil when it's almost 15K. 3 yrs pass now he still drives the same car to work. I think the car now has close to 200K on it's odometer and it still runs good!

Is it maybe because it's all highway miles? I dunno

"Is Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology a fully synthetic motor oil?"

Yes, it is. To meet the demanding requirements of today's specifications (and our customers' expectations), Mobil 1 with SuperSyn uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of additives. Each Mobil 1 with SuperSyn viscosity grade uses a unique combination of synthetic fluids and selected additives in order to tailor the viscosity grade to its specific application."

I switched over because my auto parts store was running a sale a couple months back for back one get one free. I filled my trunk with cases of oil. I saved myself some major scratch on oil.

The Pennzoil Platinum meets Acura's turbo spec

PENNZOIL PLATINUM exceeds:
• North American warranty requirements for U.S., European and Japanese cars and light trucks with gasoline and gasoline turbo-charged engines where API SM and earlier API categoriesare specified
• North American warranty requirements for U.S., European and Japanese cars and light trucks with diesel engines where API CF oils are specified
• ILSAC GF-4Energy Conserving performance standard (0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30 & 10W-30)
• Meets Chrysler MS 6395N (5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30)
• Meets Ford WSS M2C930-A (5W-20) and WSS-M2C929-A (5W-30)
• Meets GM 6094M specification (SAE 5W-30 and SAE 10W-30)
• Meets GM 4718M specification for Corvette (5W-30 and 10W-30)
• Meets Acura HTO-06 for turbo-charged applications (5W-30)
• Meets demanding ACEA requirements

Oil looking dirty in not an indication of worn out oil or that it needs to be changed.

I would totally agree with that! That probably the most unscientific way to judge an oil. Only way to tell is to have an oil analysis done.

Well there are two types of "synthetic" oil: oils that use a Type 3 base and oils that use a Type 4 base. Type 3 base is nothing more than a highly refined dino oil. Type 4 base is a true synthetic oil. Most "synthetic" oils are Type 3 oils.

So then you would ask, "why would they call a highly refined dino oil synthetic"? Well, some consumers wondered the same question and sued the oil companies. The oil companies won. They are allowed to call a motor oil FULLY SYNTHETIC even if it is a Base 3 type oil. Again, a Base 3 type oil is highly refined dino oil.

All major brands of "fully synthetic" oil are Base 3, INCLUDING PENNZOIL PLATINUM. The only brands that still use Base 4 are Royal Purple and Amsoil, as far as I know.

the switch from 5-30 for gen2 to 5-20 for gen3 is about the Govt rules on CAFE and acura used the tiny mileage increase ~ for testing purposes~ of the thinner oil
On gen2 the book say 10-30 is fine for warm climates and 5-30 everywhere
The low number is a cold temp viscosity
the upper number is what we care about -measured at 200 degrees F
the slipperiness of the oil

Whats important to us is the wear protection provided to the many parts smashing together and across each other at high speed in our engines
I have close to changing miles on my first run of PenzSynth and will have tested and post.
www.blackstone-labs.com for freee test kits, test is $23+10 if you want to know if you can keep running current fill for longer- for people that want to go over 7500 miles

The EPA made changes in the allowed additives in oil and that resulted in some formula changes and rebranding
Mobil1 old school is now mobil1 Hi Mileage Formula

I used 5W-30 Mobil 1, US made Castrol and Penz "pure" syn oils before and wasn't satisfied with how the oil holds up after 3K miles in my blown TL. I believe their syn oils are the lower end oils now, not as pure stock as the European heavy duty/high mileage oils used in BMW engines for example, class A3/B3/B4.

With use of said oils the oil turned almost black after only 3K miles and it smelled weird too. I must admit that I drive hard and the engine operates extremely hard under the high boost supercharged condition but still the syn oil suppose to last longer. Once I switched to Castrol 0-30 (German made syn) the oil remained light in color longer and no smell, under same driving conditions.

Now I didn't send any oil for testing and my findings are unscientific but that lighter color and the lack of smell other than regular smell of oil, should mean something. Maybe it means that the oil doesn't get burned up.

The green German Castrol straight thirty is hard to come by but if you see it in one of the auto supply stores like the Autozone, get it w/o any hesitation, it's the best heavy duty pure syn oil out there that I know of and it's sold for the same price as other syn oils like Mobil or Penz.

If you are NA than any number of syn oils out there will do just fine but if you are FI you owe to yourself and you engine to get the best syn oil available and I think the German Castol 0W-30 is just that. Just my experience, I don't work for Castrol!

PS. I probably should have kept my mouth shut about my oil adventure, that way I'd have more of that better oil for myself but what's the hell....another TL driver is like a brother to me, haha, enjoy!

i've used both and don't know if either one is better than the other. i can tell you that the pennzoil platinum is noooo joke: it took me over 10 minutes to drain my oil last time a did an oil change - the oil refused to leave the pan =)

I know that the 5W-30 Penz Platinum has Acura/Honda turbo engine endorsement. Meaning they favor the use of that oil in the new turbocharged 2.3L I4 RDX. I don't know, after experiencing that oil I can't say that it's any better than the regular Mobil 1, but maybe they know something I don't???

Hi there ladies and gents...

Is your car feeling sluggish?

Doesn't have that get up and go? :shakehead

Afraid of throwing a rod?

Getting on your last fucking nerve?

Welllll...there's hope! No...not that kind of hope dammit

This kind:

New Pennzoil Platinum! Your engine will love it and so will you!

Perfect for Big Daddy's 6MT NBP Acura TL , and it will also work for lesser known colors , I mean cars!

So what are you waiting for? Get the hell out there to your local automotive store and remember:

"Pennzoil Platinum! The others? - Walk right past 'em!"

break in miles about 5000 is good for a change- after that run quality oil and change every 7500 as needed by MID

The oil is supposed to pick up crud in the system and take it to the filter- some of it stays in suspension- thats the color getting darker, the oil doing its job!

Testing is the only sure method, I am thinking or running redline this time and see what the test results say between them, for now I have been very happy with the PP

Hahaha that's what I told him. He's a consultant and makes good money on this assignment that's why he can't leave yet (milking the cow you know). Anyway he lives in Manhasset (which I think is the first city in Long Island) and travels to Allentown PA.

Too bad it is not the reverse commute (i.e.: living in Allentown and working in Manhasset) where, commuter rail (NJT High Bridge-NYP, LIRR NYP-Manhasset) could play a part in the equation.

Back on topic, when I switched from Mobil1 to Royal Purple (in my 02 Maxima), the motor did seem to run a bit smoother afterwards. I will likely use RP for my AV6's first oil change.

DITTO! I've used Mobil-1 in my cars (Maximas, Toyota 4 x 4's, Corvette Z06's) for many years and have never had an issue with an engine (typically I'll sell my cars after 5 - 6 years of ownership).

Almost any good oil will allow an engine to last 5 or 6 years. If I was not keeping a car at least 10 years, no way would I pay the expense of using a syn oil. dino at 3K is all you need.

Took this from http://www.my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=253651

Had my first free oil change from the dealer but next I'll be using amsoil oil. Yes its a bit expensive but I just want to try it out and I've heard lots of good stuff about it. A couple of us chipped in to buy the 1 year membership to amsoil which gives us I think 20% off the retail value

What affect does the oil filter have in all of this.

I always understood that the oil lubricates and carries off the impurities which is caught in the filter.

If the filter becomes so dirty that the bypass valve kicks in, then you still have impurities circulating around the engine.

You always change the oil and filter together, but which goes bad first?

And are these impurities in the G35 case an example of porr oil or premature breakdown of engine components indicating a engine issue?

Pennzoil Platinum Wins Prestigious Popular Mechanics Editor's Choice Award

Pep Boys has it on sale for $1.99 after rebate. I plan on using this in my '02 Accord, then I'll decide later if it'll go in my TL as well.
