Miles To Empty

I was wondering how much have you guys let your Miles till empty go?

I got down to 34 miles.. and filled it with $3.00 (1.5Gallons) till i get to my regular gas station.. It went up to 68 miles, so it sounds like i had 1.5 gallons left..

Here's some info I put in from time to time for the benefit of newcomers.

This info is excerpted from a very long thread I started about fuel tank capacities, etc. and is based on actual and precise testing

a. When the low fuel warning light comes on, if you are getting 25 mpg you can go 94 miles, but if you are only getting 20 mpg, you can only go 74 miles. Of course, other miles per gallon figures will result in different results.

b. When miles to empty reads zero, that is time to fill up, but you can still go 57 miles at 25mpg, but only 45 miles at 20mpg.

c. When filling the tank, if you stop at the first shutoff, you will have about 17 gallons in the tank.

d. The tank will actually hold about 19 gallons, but it is not recommended to fill the tank to capacity, so stop at the first shutoff.

Ditto and have gone up to 60 miles below 0...

I've never put more than 16.5 gal in the car, so I still had a gallon and a half..

My Miles to empty was near zero, yet the needle was still just a bit below 1/8 tank, so I wasn't sweating it too much. There's probably a 2-3 gallon reserve built in there.

I thought this car had a 17.1 gallon tank.. Are there documented references to the number posted above of 19gallons ? I understand the whole reserve notion, but I thought that's why it says miles to empty referencing about 13 or 14 gallons, then up till 17 as reserve. I have never heard that our tanks are bigger than 17.1.

You mean a half gallon. It's a 17 gallon tank. 17-16.5 <> 1.5

i heard it was bad to let your tank down to almost empty, many paranoid car guys actually fill up around 1/4 or 1/8 left, any opinions?

I know this is not true for new cars but in my off-roading truck (1995 Blazer) its sujested to fill at a quarter tank because the fuel keeps the fuel pump cool

What are you talking about? What the thinks is empty? Because I do not believe the cars computer calculates the reserve gas. I have gone down passed the E. The computer said there was no miles left. Stupid computer. TL have what a 2-3 gallon reserve. Man you could drive at least 50 more miles with that. I used to ride sport bikes and most do not have gas gauges. I would ride until it stalled out do to no gas then switch to reserve and find a gas station. Thats how I drive too. I wait till it is really close to empty!
