Question Overhead light removal instructions for radar detector hard-wire install

In my '03 it was easy to remove the maplight and wire my radar dector to the current. It was easy to do ( just four screws and whola) This made for a nice looking hard-wired install. Granted the radar dector was on all the time, but I really didn't care.

In my new '04 (loving it btw) I can't seem to figure out how to remove the unit so that the same install can be repeated. Anyone figured it out yet?

Thanks.

You have to remove the sunroof switch first, then the whol plastic trim ring comes down.

You should tap into the power to the self dimming mirror, one of the two hots to it are switched, and then your detector will go off.

Search for valentine 1, there is a post by Nickpoore that shows some info on this.

If you send me a PM with your email address, I'll email you the pages from the service manual that show you how to do this.

It was easier for me to run the wire along the head liner, down the pilar and into the fuse box. You can hide the wires by tacking it.

On the A-pillar, use a bent tool like a bent small screw driver to push the wire between the glass the pillar. Route it all the way to the dash. Push the wire on the gap between the dash and the pillar all the way to the side of the dash (door open). The wire will end up at the bottom of the dash by the foot well.

I'm still having problems mounting my 8500. For those of you that have this detector, did you use the suction cups to the windshield approach? I can mount the detector this way just to the left (or right) of the rearview mirror, but because the suction cups are in the front/top of the radar, it leaves the whole radar hanging downward due to the weight of the radar. Anotherwords, I need a way to support the back of the detector so it stays level. I like nickpooore's little accessory to attach to the V1 radar, but the passport only has the suction cup thingie and I don't think the accesorry would work with it. Any ideas?

Hey guys.

If you do a SEARCH, you'll find that there are removal instructions posted in this forum.

The A Pillar is VERY EASY to remove - just pull out the plug holding it on. It's discuised as a "Air Bag" label.

All you have to do is bend the bracket (that the suctions cups are attached to) a little bit and your problem should be solved.

Thanks for everyones replies!
