Lost Keys!

2 weeks after getting the car and 1 week after giving her the keys my girlfriend lost my car keys. She had both the #2 and the Valet key.

At this point we have no idea where they could be and I have to look at my options now.

What are my options?

I was going to get a new switchblade key to replace them but if anyone found them they will be able to get into the car even if I reprogram the FOB.

Will I have to get new locks or anything to be really sure?

When a body shop "legally" stole my sisters altima (he had a connection at a nissan dealership, so he ordered a new microchip key off our vin... ), we had to have alll the locks replaced, but our insurance took care of that for us...it was about 450 dollars with labor i think (1 ignition, 1 trunk, 1 doorlock)...If you want to be safe, Suggest you go that route, but if you can, carefully back track all your/her footsteps..you never you, u just may find it! Best of luck!

Unfortunately she is really skilled when it comes to losing stuff . It was lost somewhere between the mailbox down the street and the couch. We have looked all over the place for this thing. I have given up looking for the keys and now looking at alternative options.

HAHAHAH! LOL! Im sorry that this happened...It sounds like the keys were lost in the vicinity of your home/TL....I would call up your insurance company and see if they can cover new locks..Also, do it immediately, cuz if its near your home, and some guy tries to be cute, he can have your car! (Read some of my posts....LOL, im a wee bit on the paranoid/cautious side.... ). Better to to burn a few hundred than to lose a few thousand, ya know? Best of luck man! Keep us posted on what you decide.

Get a spare key, get it cut and and programmed have them remove the other chips from the cars memory.

I had to have all my keys when they programed my switchblade key. If they can open the car, and at that time you could maybe get insurance to pay for changing the locks...

If I found a set of keys, I wouldn't check every acura I saw to see if it will start it.

Well you could try to have the dealer rekey the locks, or you can take the chance and just get new keys to be reprogrammed to the immobilizer and the lost keys deleted and if you reprogram all the key fobs the ones you have on hand will only work, but you still will have to take the chance of someone using the key in the door and unlocking it manually, but they will not be able to use the remote or start the car.

But what if you found them in close proximity of the house where a nice looking TL is sitting?

Very true - when you re-program the immobilizer any keys not present will become deactivated........... they willl work in the locks but won't start the car.

How would anyone who found them know the belong to your car tho ?

Plus rekeying all the locks and the ignition would probably cost you a fortune!

Yea..thats what we thought when we had to get new locks for my sister's car (microchip enabled as well)...but it really wasnt that much..I think somewhere around 450 dollars....as for insurance, we had state farm and informed them we want new locks for issues of our vehicle security being comprimised, and they immediately told us to go to a preferred Nissan Dealer and have them call them up...it was pretty immediate response on their part as our agent was willing to buy new locks/keys instead of paying for an entirely new vehicle/cost of replacement due to theft...But again, it was Nissan and it was State Farm....Im not really comparing apples to apples exactly as I should be...New locks and keys would probably give you the best night's rest, but there definitely are other options as ppl have listed....

FYI...dont think just cuz someone does find your key with the nice big "A" Acura logo on it that they wont try pressing the unlock/lock/panic button on it and run up and down the block with it...Kids will just because it a toy to them and they are curious as hell to see what car opens up when the button is pressed (happened on our block once..kids being kids, and they did successfully unlock a car three houses away from where the key was found and did give the key back to the owner )....but if your car gets stolen, first thing you're insurance company is going to ask "do you have all your keys" as they asked us this very same question (our agent didnt ask us to show him the keys, but we did)...and if you say no, guess what...30K+ may go down the drain cuz they may claim negligence on your part...Its just some food for thought...

If you tell insurance that you had your car reprogrammed to not work with the lost key as well as the key fob. I think you have made a valid effort to prevent a theft using your lost keys...

There are some odds that my key matches the car as well. You cant not prevent that.

Buy yourself a cover for the door lock. If there is not a place to put the key, you cant unlock it.
