Yep, low-mid 14 sec cars with a good driver. DOHC V8 + manual trans = good highway pull also.

those 4.0 liter BMW V8's are beasts on the highways, the 540i is just a fast car in general. you'll need all the bolt-on's and some good shifting to keep up with one.

I am sorry but you are wrong. I was playing arround with one of those (540 I guess auto) for about 15-20 minutes (almost 20 miles) a week ago. At one point, going up-hill the driver nailed it at about 80, 2 car lengths in front of me (at least 25 feet). I followed in 4th and by the time I hit redline, I was about 3 feet behind him, ... , flashing my high beams ...

Actually there is a good chance a TL-S could take a 5 series if he took off first.. I've been jumped on by tons of cars that I out HP and out Torque.. It's not a fair race at all but that's what makes it fun...

02 BMW 525i 180HP
02 BMW 530i 225HP 214Torque
02 BMW 540i 290HP 325Torque
05 BMW 545i 325HP

Taking a second or two jump (from a highway speed) could easily have the TL beating the 540i... not for long but it would be fun to see the BMW in your rearview momentairly and then fly by you... with you wispering "come on, come on, come on, come on... damn.. almost!!)

Are you actually telling me you wouldn't "try" to keep up with a porsche or a ferrari in traffic or on the highway? Not with the idea your luxury sedan would keep up, but doing so simply to see the results or differences with your own eyes.. or simply to see how that car hanldles at those speeds.

I was dying laughin when a new 911 porsche cooked me on the 407 here in Toronto... He and I had the whole highway to ourselfs for 20 min at 200km/h (120m/h).. at one point we launched from 120km (70miles) and took it up to 210-220km (130miles).. he was obviously leaving me like I was standing still but I was dying laughing... Once we were comfortably cruizing at 200km (slowing down for corners, and accelerating out of them...could be cops ahead) The guy in the 911 decides to slow a bit to get beside me, looks over at me, smiles and gooses it... That car took off like it had a rocket behind it!! I punched it as well but I was way out of my league....

I know my car can't beat a porsche (except a baby boxster) but am I "stupid" for having fun on the highway with someone that owns a 911? I'm sure the guy in the 911 knows his car cooks mine with out a questions, but he and I were enjoying a nice sunny sunday morning drive... If he was racing I wouldn't have been able to keep him within view longer than a min or two... but since were were pretty close throughout the drive, excluding the times he launched out of the corners, he always slowed down to share a thumbs up or a funny face with me... lol I was in stiches everytime he would launch it.. just the look on his face.. "holy $h!t....ahhhhhhh" ( and off he went )

And don't be to quick to throw around instult here.... Justin knows his stuff and has helped many many members here... He is by no means "stupid"..

Plus....I don't know of many members that will drive over 5 hours simply to attend an Acura-TL meet... and Justin has done that multiple times...

No, it means that if we were side by side when we hit it, I would have pulled at least 20 feet (1.5 cars) on him.

i have played around with cars way out of my league before it is fun to see how fast their car is and what your car can really do. I have kept up with some pretty fast car until they hit higher rpm's and toasted me. the mid range in our tl's are no joke, we can hang for a few seconds with any car until high rpm's and depending on what gear the other car is in. I left a 98 Camaro SS from 40-75 I had 2 plus car lengths on him, then he flew by, he was probably in 4th, I downshifted to 2nd and took off and I could hear his exhaust as he floored it and waiting to downshift, I agree in a short run 0-60 a good launch makes a world of difference and is usually what decides if you win or lose a race. Just have fun and be safe.

that's cool but think a little before you make a comment like that.
you're entitled to your opinion. my cls has h/i and has run low 14s. stock 540s run low 14 and better stock.

Keep in mind that BMW horses are real horses. Going against 290 bhp/324 torque BMW with your 258 bhp/232 torque Acura is like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

I used to race a buddies 540i manual religously in my old modified grand cherokee 5.9 (14.2@97). From a roll we were dead even, I dont see how he's going to shit on a well driven 6 speed 3g with that trap, sorry.

+1

Also I belive the BMW 540 is has 4.4 liter engine.

BMW tend to under rate their HP. Those cars are monster.

I raced one long time ago when I had my TL-S and I lost. I had a good launch so I was about a 1 car length, maybe little more and he was catching up pretty fast.

I kept pretty good but after/near 100mph, my TL-S it was history.

TL-S is pretty fast up to 100mph or end of 3rd but once you go into 4th, it sucks.

But, an extremely well driven TL 6MT should be able to run well with the E39 540i 5AT.

As for the E60, I drove the 530i last week and the 545i this past weekend. The TL 6MT should have no problem taking the 530i and the TL 5AT would probably be a stalemate with the 530i AT...neither being particularly quick.

I'll just throw this one out there, since it was mentioned: as for the 545i (325hp), the NSX is the only production Acura/Honda that has the ability to even run close to it. The thing's a complete beast........and now BMW has upgraded it to a 4.8L 550i with 360hp.

The NSX was designed years ago... with the 300hp (gemtlemans agreement) limit in mind during the design process.... Now with Acura's future sports car holding a v12.. you do the math.... no sedan will touch it..

mine's was a statement of relativity. Dont get your 'Haines for Her' in a wad, that statement wasnt meant to emasculate the NSX.

BUH?

Sounds like that statement was made soley for the reason of emasculating the NSX..
You do know what the word means right?
Emasculate: to weaken or to reduce the effectiveness of something.

I know what you are saying, but come on, you can't compare a 454 chev to a lotus... One is raw power and the other is more of a finess combo if handling, weight and hp... This is an obvious extream example, but it shows cars made for different purposes can't really be judged together justly.

It was meant to scale the performance of the 545i vs Honda's current offerings. To wit, the only Honda that has the capacity to beat a beast like the 545i (now discontinued in favor of the 550i) is the NSX. ...I'm not one to berate your beloved NSX.

Maybe Honda should consider producing a V8 Sports sedan sometime time in the near future that can compete with the 550i, M45, GS430, STS V8, etc,... ...JUST a thought!!

it's cool, I guess I shouldstop answering threads at 4am, I came off a little rough, no harm meant ...

I'm kinda pissed Honda hasn't released a V8 for the RL, even though we know it's coming, every test drive of the new RL had it beating most, if not all, of the competition however the torque from the V6 was adaquet, even though the Hp was above other V8's in it's class.

I hope and pray Honda isn't spending all their design time making the new v12 solely for the supercar?. A V12 that shuts down to four cylinders on the hwy is incredible, why design that solely for a supercar? who cares about gas in a supercar?

No sweat Residual.

If I was betting man, I'd say that Honda will lean towards a V6 w/IMA rather than an a V8. The AV6H's J30A seems like a good starting point. At 255hp/232 lb-ft, it's definitely one of the most powerful 3.0L V6s on the market (excl. the C30A).

But, I'd rather see them develop a 350hp+/325 lb-ft+ V8 for the RL....the rest of the car is super already; just needs a bit more 'pony' pull!!
