Talking Looking at TL's

Hey guys, I'm new here so I would like to thank you for the help ahead of time.

But without further ado, here is my question; I am possibly looking to trade in my '04 Pontiac Bonneville GXP for a 3rd Gen (most likely an '04) TL and I was wondering what are some of the "issue" areas that I should be aware of when test driving these cars. Are there common engine or tranny problems? And interior issues like crappy buttons? Overall, I've heard pretty good things about this car, but would like to get more insight.

Also, beside reliability being a huge key for me, I NEED something that is fun to drive. Just out of curiosity, how would you rate your experience with the TL?

Thanks again for the help!

Welcome to the forum!

Love the GXP! My parents had a V6 Bonneville and that thing was a tank. Pretty quick back in the early 2000's too, can't imagine how the V8 pulls.

Looking at a 6MT or 5AT TL?

The 6MT would definitely be more fun to drive. Rattles was probably one of my issues with the TL. Other then that, I didn't have any major problems. Minor stuff but only after about 90K...interior door handle was peeling off, warranty covered the 3rd gear syncro's on the transmission and ohh yeah rattles! But that's easy to fix if you like working on your cars.

Yeah I do like the GXP overall, but the N* engine is starting to worry me in the reliability department. An engine with no gaskets and issues with losing oil and coolant, not repairs I can afford right now. Its a size 5 engine in a size 2 engine compartment so there's ņo working room either.

But to be honest, it sure is fun to drive and has all the gadgets I could possibly need. If I do trade it in, I'll be sad to see it go.

But to answer your other question, I would most likely look at the 5AT TL. I already have a 6-speed car waiting in the garage for summer to come around again.

Are there any other problem areas I should look out for? Thanks.
