Looking at an 04 TL, got questions...

Hey guys, new here. My wife has an 07 TSX, bright red with spoiler. Bought it new in October, we absolutely love it.

Anyway, I am thinking of trading my 2001 ford f150 in on a 2004 TL. Its dark gray with light gray leather interior. It has 58000 miles. I talked them down to $19900. I have a few questions:

1) Do the 04s have factory HID headlights?

2) Is there anything maintenance wise I should look for?

3) Whats some issues that the 04s have had whether it be mechanical or whatever.

4) Is 58k alot for an acura? i know honda/acuras run forever.

5) Is everyone getting around 25 mpg combined?

I know, I know FNGs with questions, lol. But i would appreciate some input from you guys that have had them a little while.

why in the hell did you do a test thread? thats not necessary.

anyway,

1. yes
2. search
3. sounds like question 2. thats something you'll just have to find out. look at the tsbs I would say.
4. I wouldnt think so.
5. that sounds about right depending on your driving habits..

Please read the rules on posting before you post again..

Thanks, welcome aboard.... check out the garage, plenty of info there as well

i got an '04 with 38k miles for 22k. Look at it closely (interior/exterior) for any flaws, scratches, etc... if you find some I would try to get a little more off. If its in excellent condition (new tires too), then it seems like a good deal.

1. Yes
2. Make sure all maintenance is up to date. With any used car, I would expect the engine oil and filter to be changed, the engine AND cabin air filters to be changed (remove both filters from their respective compartments and check, don't take their word for it), and the transmission fluid to be clean. At 58k, it's probably due for a transmission fluid change soon though. Also check to make sure that the brake fluid was replaced. Acura requires it every three years. If there's no written proof that the fluid had been replaced before, insist that they do it before the vehicle is sold to you. Also check that all four tires are matching (of brand/model and size) and there's at least 5/32" tread remaining. It's very important to check for uneven wear due to inflation or alignment. You should also check how much brake pad is remaining, I expect at least 5mm front/rear. All of those are items that I check when I buy an used car.
3. Search
4. You'll be due for a timing belt, water pump, spark plugs and drive belt replacement at around 105k. That could cost you around $1000. The transmission may not last 200k either, just be aware of that.
5. Depends on your driving style.

2004 is the 1st year model of 3G TL and I think you should look into getting a 05 3G TL.

The reason I say this is that majority of issues on the 2004 model are fixed on the 2005.

I believe you can find some good deals on 2005 TL instead of 2004.

Good luck.

Well homies the TL I was looking at purchasing this morning was sold last night so the search continues. Thanks for your inputs guys. much appreciated.

Hopefully I will find one by the end of the month. I was worried about the high mileage on that one anyway. There are plenty more TLs out there!

Get an 05 or 06. Most of the "first model year bugs" have been worked out of the car by then. I have an 06 - no issues. Good luck in your search.

Keep looking for a good deal

I bought an 05 in February w/ 25k on the odometer. 6sp SSM w/o NAV. Paid $21k; car was from Honda Remarketing (lease return); very pleased so far. If you buy a manual, take note of 3rd gear and how the car shifts. There has been quite a bit of discussion on the third gear issue. Good luck!

I bought an 05 in August. Love it and surely would recommend it. I have no serious issues with the car at all. Its a 6 speed and I highly recommend it as the car comes with brembos and a LSD up front. I do have the "third gear issue" but its really not a big deal. As long as your conscious about your shifting you know when its fully engaged or not. Def. try to find an 05+

I have an o4 6spd 3G TL.
I havn't found any problems with it besides the 3rd gear issue--which can be resolved EASILY. There are some rattles here and there--but that doesn't bother me.
Actually--the only problem or issue that bothers me is the vibration-feeling in the gear-stick at certain speeds. Oh wait--and the leather interior thats starting to stick out at the driver's side-door.
My car is at like.. 98,000++KMs[not miles]. I bought it used, havn't double checked to see if it needs other fixes--should do that soon.

I think the most you'd have to worry about, if you get an o4 TL [or any other TL] is knowing what mod the car with next! -- well that is if you will mod it.

Sorry, I remembered something.
If you do by chance mod the TL--the MOST [in my opinion] that you would have to worry about is rusted bolts, screws and clips.
When I was removing my bumper and installing the AEM Intake/P2R TB Spacer/Gaskets... everything was pretty much rusted in. Took forever to remove certain parts.

There are threads about high mileage TL's. Take a look at those but no major issues. Also, 58K isn't really high miles, welcome. Good luck with your search, get the factory navigation if you can afford it.
