LoJack
I am getting LoJack put on the car.. does anyone have this and what is your experience with it as far as the installtion etc.
It says in the Nav book they shouldntr put it near the nav system in the trunk or near the nacv in the car.
How long does the install take and has anyone here had to use it.... Does it wire into the car .. what does it look like?

Usually the installer won't tell you where the LoJack is installed. Shouldn't take more than 10 - 15 minutes. I never had to use it, but if your vehicle gets stolen, call the cops and tell them your Vin# and they will track it down.

Oh, they install it in my driveway too, but the installer told me that I am not permitted to look. So I agreed and let him do his install. Afterwards, he gave me a card with my vin number.

Did you tell them not to put it near navo system so it wouldn't mess it up?
How come they don't want the OWNER to see? What if someone is across the street or something watching (unlikely I guess).

I'm getting LoJack and the dealer quote was $575 with out "notification feature" and $875 with "notification feature" The notification feature contacts you by phone, cell or beeper that your car is being driven without being deactivated by your lojack keyfob button.

I finally called, stimulated by this thread. Lojack has NO coverage in Ohio!! Bummer.
I'll have to try RoadRemote or a similar service.

I paid $875 so i suppose I am getting it with notification! If not, I will make sure I do... It sounds like a great feature. I always for years thought there should be some way to contact you if your car got stolen and now there is... (at least if someone is driving it who shouldn't be)

As a past employee of LoJack, there are things which need to be kept secret in order for the system to conitnue to work and be successful. The installation takes 20-30 minutes to install and complete the paperwork. The installer will not show you the device or tell you where it's installed.. "But it's my car and I want to know what you're putting in!" or the "How do I know you installed it?" Just let the installer do his or her job...... They are trained professionals.
The system works great and now that I'm using the tracking unit to track the car theives, we find 99% of the cars we get hits on.
Good luck with your Jacks, hopefully you'll never need to use it!!!

I found out though that the dealer charged my 875 for the BASIC LoJack.... when I called back upset he said he would give me the Early Alert.

I thought it somehow attatches to the battery though to get juice.
Didn't somebody post a link for www.directed.com that is apparently better than LoJack since (from what I understand anyway) LoJack is dependent up on local law enforcement having LoJack tracking capabilities? This other unit this person mentioned was totally GPS-based. So if GPS available, then the car can be tracked.
I've never used any of these, so I'm just asking for more info myself...

LoJack somehow is able to find your vehicle wherever it is. Even not outside.
And as far as the law enforcement, LoJack says they are the only ones that are tied in with Law enforcement to find the car.. otherwise, who is going to go find it anyway!
Just stating what I read.. LoJack has become the JELLO or gelatin in this area it seems!

According to LoJacks website, and this does make sense, the GPS based systems can easily be defeated by damaging or breaking off the antennna... Also they can not find cars that are in a garage (where a theif would most likely take them) or not in direct path to the GPS satellites.

I'm not so sure OnStar has the same capability as LoJack.
I believe that OnStar uses GPS/Cellular technology , where LoJack is a radio based tracking system that is activated after the car is reported stolen. If the stolen car with OnStar is taken into a place where GPS or cellular won't work, they won't be able to tell where the car is exactly. They can probably get close to it but since LoJack uses a transponder that the police use to find the car with detection equipment in their car, they can go directly to the car. LoJack isn't dependent on the cellular system or on GPS.

Because what would happen if someone takes a LoJacked car from one state and drives it to one without LoJack support?
Mike (getting LoJack next week)
If your area supports LoJack then you'll be OK. Your car will be found within hours if not minutes after being activated. Cars with Jacks have been recovered in containers ready to board ships and in the process have uncovered several stolen cars. Jacks also have back-up batteries built in, OnStar on the other hand is disabled if the battery is disconnected. And the only time OnStar is used by law enforcement is when it gets reported to OnStar. Jacks are activated automatically when the vehicle gets entered into SVS (stolen vehicle system).
Jacks are radio freq based and have a signal range up to 3-5 miles and up to 12-15 miles in wide open areas.
LoJack is costly to get started (radio towers and patrol car installs) in areas and eventually will be nationwide, give it time.

Lo Jack reminds me of TiVo.
Everyone sort of knows what it does.. people make references to it and joke about it sometimes... but not everyone has it or knows it's benefits and those that do seem to be really happy with it.
