Left dash tweeter rattle

Anyone have instructions on removing the left dash tweeter? Is it just like removing the center spkr? This thing rattles bad when driving on rough surface. I put my hand on it when it rattles and it stops. Who else has this problem?
Thanks all....

I have the same problem. But I notice that this only happens when the weather is cold (ie. morning *40-50 Degrees*). By afternoon time, while I'm driving around for lunch, the rattle is gone.

The service manual (page 22-421) says to carefully pry the tweeter grille out from the dashboard. It does not show a tool to be used, so I guess you could use whatver fits in the opening, like maybe a small screwdriver with tape around the end to keep from scratching anything.

Once the grille is off, you can remove the tweeter. Again, there are no screwws shown so it looks like it just sits in there, but there is a connector under the tweeter which may be the cause of the rattle if it is hitting on something.

Let us know what you find out so we can use this thread for future reference.

I have this same problem, though I found it to be the grill on top of the speaker..I bet like one drop of superglue would fix it...or even see if just rotating the grill maybe. I have not tried to fix it yet...

Yep,

Same thing I have. Thought I fixed it with some thin black plastic strips lodged between the grill and the dash, but that only seemed to last for a few months, damm thing is vibrating again.

Please share any fix, I was not able to remove the grill, just ended up denting it a little, so be carefull.

I would love to hear from you folks too. Mine only started rattling recently with the temps dipping into the 20s. It's amazing what noises you hear esp. since the climate controls shuts off the fans until the engine warm up. What used to get masked in my Camry with the fans blowing frigid air is easily heard in my TL.

My rattle occurs whether it is warm or cold. I cannot duplicate the rattle by tapping on the grill.
Ron A, thanks for consulting the service manual for direction. The spkr is countersunk to the dash and I don't dare use some type of pry tool. Im sure the spkr will not turn, there is probably some fasteners that make it go on one way.
Hey, nuttyirishman, how did you get the spkr out w/o damaging it?
Im sure with all our input, we can lick this annoying problem.

The tweeter grill is very easy to remove. I have replaced my my tweeters, yet still have the rattle too.

There are 3 snap-in plastic pieces on the tweeter that snap in to slots inside the cover. I had to cut one of the slots to get the tweeter out. I left two slots intact so the tweeter could still be snapped in whenever I decide to go back to the factory install.

Never was able to get it out. Tried, but thought I might do more damage. No on one could explain safe removal to me either.

Here was my experience about 9 months ago. What sounded like it was the tweeter was actually the air vent on the driver side. I simply pulled the vent off (grab firmly and pull forward), put it back on, and my rattle went away. I originally thought it was the tweeter assembly, but that was not the issue. For reference, to remove the tweeter just use a flathead screwdriver and pry up. It is really easy to do and even though you may have worries about damaging the car you won't, unless you are totally careless. The tweeter has 3 "alignment valleys" that hold the tweeter in place and also make sure you place it back in the dash in the proper orientation. There is no grill on the tweeter. It is actually a plastic housing with a tweeter in it and a connector. Don't be afraid to play around and you'll see.

Hmm, interesting with the vent making the rattle. Could be a possiblity. Just that when I hear the rattle, I put my finger on the tweeter grille and the rattle stops. But at least there are two options to try out. Also when you mean "pull forward" on the vent, you meant towards yourself?
Thanks for your post.

Yes, pull toward yourself. The vent is held in by clips or friction fittings as I like to call them. I did fail to mention that placing pressure on my tweeter also alieviated the "vent rattle" I was having, misleading me into thinking that it was the tweeter. Strange, I must admit... but that is how things worked out for me. best of luck with the rattles. They can be a pain to figure out and fix sometimes.

It is loud to me. It sounds more like a clicking rattle. Definitely pronounced when I drive over the little lane bumps with the left tires or if the road is rough causing vibration. Doesn't occur with the right tires. If you don't have it, you will probably not get it. Im still under 1000 mi.
TheNIP73, that is an interesting post. Pressure on the tweeter stops the vent rattle. Man oh man. Its like putting a bandaid on your left thumb to stop the bleeding to your palm. But Im willing to try it.
